Undergraduate / "I dream to be a professional programmer" - Statement - reasons for applying to HKU [5]

Please provide information which you feel will be of interest to the Admissions Tutors and will help them know you better, e.g. your reasons for applying to HKU, the chosen curricula, extra-curricular activities, participation in voluntary work, past working experience, career aspirations and other achievements.

University life is one of the stages that we will get through in our life, for an adequate period of study, usually three to four years. Hence, it is not weird for us for wanting to admit into a reputable university. What more to say is its quality which can help us better in pursuing our knowledge and that is why Hong Kong University comes into my eyes.

Nowadays, competitions are all around the world, countries compete for resources, staffs compete for promotion, for students, they compete for excellence in the university. I believe that Hong Kong University is one of the most competitive university in the world and it is undeniable that I can benefit a lot from this competitive spirit during my study in the university and it prepares me well when I am entering the working society.

In Malaysia, it is common for us to percept that all schools in Hong Kong are based in Mandarin language, but the seminar in my Tunku Abdul Rahman College has changed my perception. The lecturer has brought me in to an another new horizon, I have learnt that Hong Kong University(HKU) are not only based in English language, but also is one of the reputable university in Asia. Moreover, I could find my preferable course there, in this HKU.

I dream to be a professional programmer, one who has a decent knowledge of all programming language and am able to design a program which can benefit all the humankind, just like Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the Facebook Social Network. I also understand that for every victory, there are a lot of hard works and patience you have to pay; these qualities are the frontier that separates a successful programmer and a common programmer.

Judging from my capabilities, I am quite assured of myself that I have the patience as well as the commitment to work through this hardship. Serving as the committee in my school Student Welfare Club, I have involved a lot in any event organized by the club. From these activities, I not only learnt the importance of the cooperation but also enhanced my patience in planning as well as executing all the events.

HKU seems to be a perfect place for me full of elites from the world. The three languages that I have mastered will definitely help me to have a harmonious life in the community there. If I am accepted luckily, instead of locking myself in my own world, I will get in touch with the people around me extensively. Being a member of the university, I will definitely participate in all events to enrich my extracurricular life

Hong Kong University is no doubt one of the best universities in the world; however I am quite confident to become one of the best elites with my excellent performance and high learning abilities in both my study and extracurricular activities.

any criticism are welcomed

Undergraduate / "the application of a theory" - Johns Hopkins - why I choose to major in engineering [7]

quite good essay, but in my opinion, it seems to be a little bit short, why dont try to add some of your extracurricular experience that can actually be a help in your pursue in engineering course?

try relate what you have participate in your high school and i believe that can bring a quite good perception from the officer.

edited: just try to push your essay up to around 500 words not more or less, since they just want you to have a brief essay.

Scholarship / Essay about a viable alternative to fossil fuel. [3]

cooperation between fossil fuels and our environment
i doubt that cooperation is the suitable phrase to put here, why dont just say linkage? or relationship?

IMO, wind energy is one of the best alternative ways, however, just like solar energy, the technology in this sector are still not mature enough to produce such massive energy in order to accommodate the needs of the people, not to say such need are still growing now. I believe so far nuclear fission is the best energy replacement for fossil fuels, in meanwhile we can wait for the technology for wind energy to be matured, also not to mention the nuclear fusion technology, scientist believe nuclear fusion is also one of the efficient, clean and nonpolluting alternative for the fossil fuels

Writing Feedback / Do you agree that one should never be judged by their external appearances-fback [4]

Do you agree that one should never be judged by their external appearances?
In United States, there are signs of stereotypes among their people and it is the skin colour! As we know, black-skinned guy are referred as evil, hideous guys who have caused many troubles to the society and the white skinned guy are the righteous one who never do such bad things. However, we should never them like that because there is an ancient Chinese sayings, "you will never know the orange is either good or bad unless you peel off the skin".

Nowadays, social crimes are seen everywhere and most of the victims are female. Some believe such phenomena are caused by the loss of morality. To some extent, it is true, but most of the time it is the victim's perception on humans' looking. Victims tend to believe those good looking guy and follow them. Because of this, we can see that most of the criminal are the ones we will never believe they will do such things. On the other hand, we cannot say those bad looking guy must be the one criminal because they are born like that; it is not their will to be like that. Moreover, there are good guys among them too!

Back to those days in United States, black skinned races were discriminated by the whitish. They were symbolized as the source of evil. Even the whitish parents, who discriminated them, instilled a bad perception to their offspring, which is black skinned guys are the one who will do all crimes. They even call the black skinned guys "negro", a word which insult and offend them. However, we will never know who they are before we get to know them in depth. In these days, there is less discrimination towards the black man. There is even a black man president in United States, a breakthrough in United States history. President Barack Obama works so hard for his country, how could we defy his contributions for the United States just because he is a black guy? Unlike United States, Malaysia is a country where has a strong unity among races, despite the skin colour where this had happened decades ago compared to United States! In Malaysia, the citizens will not stay away from you just because you are having different skin colour from them. It is a good value where United States should emulate.

In entertainment industry, celebrities are not as pure as we think of. A female artist who might have pure, innocent and good looking face, might as well as involve in orgy, drugs-taking and smoking. For instance, Vanessa Huygens involves in taking self-nude photo and sending to her boyfriend. We never think she would do that, so like the sayings, "never judge the book by its cover". Even in Asia entertainment industry, such incident did happen. Thousands of Hong Kong female artist's nude photos exposed to the web and most of the female artists are the one we could not imagine of. So, would you really believe them are not doing such things through their pure, innocent looking?

Even in business area, we also cannot judge people by their appearances. We have to aware of people among us, even the best friends. They might betray you by taking your contributions as their own. In addition, just like what happened in most soap opera, the chief executive officer is betrayed by their most trusted men. Why such thing will happen? Maybe they really judge their men by their appearances.

Although we should never judge people by appearances, we also should not only trust in ourselves because we never know someday we might need others help. Nevertheless, we should never judge people by their appearance and drop down our stereotypes and prejudices before we get to know them more deeply.
