Writing Feedback / IELTS WRITING TASK 2: State investment in medical research or environmental protection [NEW]

Governments should spend more money on medical research to protect citizen's health rather than on protecting the environment.

Do you agree or disagree?

There is an opinion that more state funding should be allocated to clinical research than for tackling environmental problems. Personally, I wholeheartedly disagree with this argument and this essay will give some points below.

One might argue that medical research can play an integral role in insulating people from diseases. This is based on the assumption that clinical studies address the ways illnesses progressively impacts the bodies, which may help researchers identify the superior intervention methods to prolong patients' longevity. Besides, medical trials can serve as the grounds for future therapies and medications that will help develop the management of serious health conditions. To cite an example, the Ghanian government has tasked with conducting research and introduced thousands of certified doses of COVID-19 vaccine to prevent its residents from contracting this deadly disease.

Despite the reasons outlined above, it is my view that authorities' investment in the protection of the environment holds more importance than that in medical studies. This is because many environmental problems are the root of countless diseases such as: respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitism, lung cancer,...) caused by air pollution; hearing loss resulting from noise pollution; diarrhoea, dysentery - consequences of water pollution, to name a few. Futhermore, contaminated hygienic conditions are likely to be linked to the widespread transmission of several health risks. That is to say, that governing bodies invest more on the alleviation of such environmental issues can prove more effective in improving people's health since a large number of health hazards will be eliminated. Falling need for clinical research can also put less pressure on the national budget, thus facilitate investment in other imperative sectors including education or urban planning.

In conclusion, it seems to me that scientific health research should not be given top priority when it comes to allocating state financial resources.

I would be really grateful to receive your feedbacks.

Writing Feedback / A positive situation of owning a home rather than renting one [5]

Regarding the introduction, I think the sentence "In my opinion, this idea is a positive situation" is wrongly written since an idea cannot itself be a situation.

Although key kouns are repeated, you have not used proper alternatives for the phrases that need paraphrasing, leading to numerous repetitions. For example, "owning a house" can be well replaced by "house ownership", "possessing a house", or "living in a self-owned home", to name a few. This lack of alternatives could lead to additional deductions in the LR (Lexical resource) section.

Writing Feedback / The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten [4]

There are some grammatical mistakes in your essay. For example, "the main cause of this movement came from a poor diet": "came" should be replaced by "comes" since this sentence is related to the writer's opinion that has nothing to do with the past tense. Also, "a lot of children addicted to its taste" should be "a lot of children were addicted to its taste". Such mistakes can affect your Grammatical Range and Accuracy scores negatively.

Writing Feedback / WRITING IELTS TASK 2: oral communication is more effective than written word [2]

Spoken communication is more powerful than written communication.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is an opinion that oral communication is more effective than written word. Personally, I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement and this essay will give some points below.

One might argue that verbal language is a more powerful means of communication than written language. This is based on the assumption that spoken language is informal and usually involves body language and facial expressions. Therefore, it can be better understood by people of all ages than written language with often long sentences in complex tenses. Evidence can be seen in the way many young children who have not learnt to read and write yet can easily communicate with their parents, for example, by talking or crying.

Despite the benefits outlined above, I believe that written communication plays a more integral roles than oral interaction. Since there are no records, the latter's ability to convey information effectively, though present, is restrained to the time and place that the process of communication takes place. Meanwhile, written language promotes communication across space and time as long as the medium (maybe books, articles, magazines, to name a few) exists. In this sense, written language can serve as solid evidence for future reference in case any confusions or conflicts occur. Besides, human can widen their knowledge through studying historical documents archived in the form of written texts that could otherwise evaporate by word of mouth.

In conclusion, it is my view that written interaction is of more significance than verbal language for reasons associated with permanence.

I will be very grateful to receive your feedbacks.
