Undergraduate / Village Records/ better to give than to receive/I went to Nashville; 3 NYU Short Answers [4]

If you could engage in an activity at NYU, what would it be and how would you envision it impacting the larger community?
I would join Village Records but I would attempt to make changes and propose new ideas to the students who run the organization. I want to recommend that the club set up a small, monthly music festival in which NYU artists could perform. One goal of the society would be to make sure to include musicians of all genres, building on the ever growing diversity of the university and New York City. I feel I could be a great asset to the already successful label with my great organization skills. (496 characters)

Describe a trait or characteristic that has been passed along by your family. Why do you like/dislike this aspect of yourself?
My parents have always taught me to be a giving person. "It is always better to give than to receive" has been instilled into my mind since I was young. Helping my elderly neighbor rake her yard or collecting food for the poor during our church's annual Thanksgiving food drive are ways my parents and I have always given to others. Even if I am not verbally thanked for doing something nice, the feeling of knowing that it was the right thing to do is all the thanks I need. (477 characters)

How did you spend your most recent summer vacation?
This summer I went to Nashville, D.C., Chicago, and Key West. However, the majority of my summer was spent visiting my grandparents in XXX, Iowa, a small town on the Mississippi River where my mother grew up. While we were there, due to heavy rains, the Mississippi rose and flooded the downtown area. In order to prevent water from entering buildings, my family and I volunteered to sandbag. Our hard work paid off when the water receded and there was very little damage done to the town. (498 characters)

thanks everyone

Undergraduate / 'Internship participation' - NYU short answer: Why did you chose this school? [11]

Okay, here's my editing after zowzows suggestions. I decided to leave the last sentence the same to keep it below 500 characters.

I chose to construct an individualized major from the Gallatin School because of the flexibility and infinite possibilities. Gallatin will allow me to pursue my interests in both international finance and music administration, without the requirement of an audition since I do not play an instrument. My aspiration is to have a profession in band management overseas. I'm mainly interested in the ability this major will give me to participate in various types of internships, especially abroad.

Student Talk / Are scholarships for essays offered by all colleges? [6]

You should check with the schools to which you are applying websites. They should have the information on there. Actually, I've never heard of a school giving a scholarship for a good essay or anything...

Undergraduate / 'Internship participation' - NYU short answer: Why did you chose this school? [11]

I have exactly 500 characters so, if you have any suggestions on cutting out a few unnecessary words I would be able to use some bigger vocab words... also since I'm apply into Gallatin School of Individualized Study it says I should refer specifically to why I'm interested in the opportunities presented by developing an individualized program. Do you think I do that enough?

Thanks for everyone's help! This site rulessssss!

P.S. I'm also unsure if I should include "What interests you most about your intended disipline?" because of what the NYU site said about focusing on why I'm interested in Gallatin opportunities. Any pointers on what I should do about that?

Undergraduate / NYU talent show song short answer [5]

I would choose to sing the song "Helpless" by Neil Young. My reasoning for choosing this song is because of the message Young is sending through the lyrics and tone. He describes that it's a difficult thing to grow up in a place you despise all your life but after you get out into the world you discover that place was your home all along. Young paints a picture in his listeners' minds through the nature-inspired lyrical imagery about "a town in north Ontario."

any feedback at all would be helpful. thanks.

Undergraduate / CommonApp Short Answer: elaborate on one of your activities [11]

It says less than or equal to 150 words and i have 119 words:

As the treasurer of my school's Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, it is my responsibility to manage the society's financial account. At the beginning of each year I must collect the member's dues and additional money if they would like to purchase a Mu Alpha Theta polo. This year, I assisted in finding a company that would sell our society good quality polo-shirts at a low cost. Recently I was elected to be the chief organizer for the society's annual pumpkin pie fundraiser. It was my job to find the best deal on pies, figure out how much to sell them for, and run the fundraiser on the day of the sale. Our profit was close to $300.

Any feedback at all would be great. Do you think I should elaborate more? Is the last sentence about our profit a little irrelevant?

Thanks for all your help!

Undergraduate / My moral strength: parents and my Catholic education -FSU application essay [3]

For almost one hundred years, the Latin words, "Vires, Artes, Mores" have been the guiding philosophy behind Florida State University. Vires signifies strength of all kinds - moral, physical, and intellectual; Artes alludes to the beauty of intellectual pursuits as exemplified in skill, craft, or art; and Mores refers to character, custom, or tradition. Describe how one or more of the values embodied in these concepts are reflected in your life.

Florida State University's motto, "Vires, Artes, Mores" combines strength, the arts, and tradition. Even though all of these values are reflected in my life, Vires, the Latin word meaning strength, is the one that I feel I exemplify the most. My strength is a valuable asset that assists me in being a well-rounded and successful person.

My moral strength comes from my parents and my Catholic education. Both have taught me to make the right choices and to not be afraid to stand up for what I believe in. I find this to be demonstrated the most in my Economics Honors class. When we are discussing our views on the upcoming Presidential Election, I stand up for what I believe in and make my opinions known, despite not sharing the same beliefs as the majority of the students in my class.

Playing on my high school's tennis team reflects my physical strength. After trying out for the team sophomore year and not making it, I had my mind set on playing my junior year. I took lessons twice a week, even in the hot Florida sun, and I worked out at the gym because I was determined to succeed. My hard work and perseverance paid off when I made the team.

My intellectual strength is reflected in the grades I have received throughout my academic career. I take pride in myself for being a good student and getting the best grades I can. This is reflected in my 4.23 GPA. My thirst for knowledge helps me strive to learn and I take many challenging classes that are offered at my school, such as AP Biology, AP United States History, Composition Dual Enrollment, and Spanish Dual Enrollment.

Vires, the Latin word for strength is one of my most evident qualities. Moral, physical and intellectual strength is clearly evident in my life. As these strengths have helped me be successful throughout my high school career, I know they will do the same when I attend Florida State University.
