Grammar, Usage / Question about Citation (multiple cites for 1 author) [4]

I have a question concerning some citations... now, Im doing my paper with the basis around a show called Heroes... and the writer is Tim Kring, hes the creator of the show also and writes all the scripts for all the episodes. Thing is, I have found multiple sites and direct primary sources in which he is the author all from different places. For instance, i have a script of the show that he wrote, acutally, multiple episodes, how do i site that they are different ones if they are all by the same writer?

Next, there is also a website that has been created to go along with the show, so how do i site the website if Tim Kring is the creator, how do i distinguish it from the other citations in the paper in which he is the author?

Thanks,
Donal.

thanks for the compliment! lol, yep, sean sorry I sounded a little ticked, i didnt make what I was trying to say clear at all, my bad.

I also have another question...
Am I aloud to refer to the human species in my paper as "our species" or "we" and am I aloud to ask questions in my paper like, "where are we headed?"

Thanks,
Donal.

Research Papers / Starting Research Paper (Kring's "Heroes") [19]

lol, well I think you need to re-read my thesis statement... when I say most of these abilities I obviosuly do not mean flying or teleportation, im talking about regeneration, super strength, larger capacity for memory, faster reflexes, better sight, better hearing/smell, and im comparing these abilities to evolution, being that the ones that are presented in Heroes might eventually arise as man continues to evolve, it doesnt mean tomorrow... im just arguing the point that they are possible with time.

Research Papers / Starting Research Paper (Kring's "Heroes") [19]

this is what i have for an intro paragraph:

"The Human Genome Project has discovered that tiny variations in man's genetic code are taking place at increasingly rapid rates. Teleportation, levitation, tissue regeneration. Is this outside the realm of possibility? Or is man entering a new gateway to evolution? Is he finally standing at the threshold to true human potential?" (CITATION) One is often faced with such questions when envisioning the future of our species; where are we headed and what is our eventual destination? When faced with such questions it is often hard to put forth a single answer that can be accepted by all. Regardless, there is an answer to these questions that suffices; the evolution of our species is at its pinnacle, "we are finally standing at the threshold to human potential." When a species, such as ours, is faced with dramatic global challenges, dramatic climate change, disease and hunger that species will make drastic changes in its physiological aspect in order to adapt to these new conditions. Perhaps fantasies of super hero powers are not too far out of scope for our species; such ideologies may become reality as our species continues to develop and grow. Tim Kring's provides a fictional scenario in Heroes where supernatural abilities possessed by humans are possible; most of these abilities can be proven plausible when compared to the basic principles of evolution as expressed in Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, whereas some are disproven by Sir Isaac Newton's series on physics entitled Principia.

lol, well charles darwins evolutionary theories could allow for some of the abilities such as regeneration or the ability to read minds in some regards or even superhuman strength agility and perception, but I also want to disprove others such as flying and the ability to move objects with the mind using newtons principles of physics...

Research Papers / Starting Research Paper (Kring's "Heroes") [19]

Hi Everyone, Im pretty new to the forum, just had a few questions regarding how to start my research paper.

The topic for my senior year research paper is British Literature, there was not prompt assigned.

the topic choice was pretty open so I chose the following as mine:
"Supernatural abilities as seen in Tim Kring "Heroes" can be proven possible by basic evolutionary principles expressed by Charles Darwin in his "Origin of Species."

I really have no idea where to get started, I have tried to write out an outline, but its not going too well. Im using inspiration, but I can seem how to figure out where to get started and what my main topics should be...

My next question is, for the intro, can I use a quote to start it off and then the thesis, or how is the first paragraph supposed to be formated? Next, could I begin the second paragraph by explaining what "Heroes" is all about? or should I start off by talking about Charles Darwin's theories on evolution?

Also, maybe I could prove and disprove certain types of "abilities" within the show by using Darwin's book and also using sir Issac newtons series called "Principia" to disprove some others?

Ugh, this whole process of beginning is agonizing!

Any and all help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Donal.

Undergraduate / I believe that my submission is a strong reflection of my potential (Flex Path Option) [3]

I was wondering if someone could review my response to the following two questions on the WPI flex path supplement:

1. Please use the space provided to describe your flex path submission
2. Please use the space provided to tell the admissions committee why you think this submission is a strong reflection of your potential for success at WPI.

I simply combined the two questions into one long answer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My submission for the Flex Path Option is a small collection of images that I have taken as a professional photographer. The images provided are examples of my most recent work. For many years, photography was simply a hobby of mine, but in recent months it has become a business. For the past year or so, I have managed my own photography business. As a photographer, I offer the following products: Senior portraits/ other various portraits, sports photographs, fine art, product photography, and other events, such as weddings.

In the two photo booklets that I have submitted with my Flex Path submission, is an array of my most recent works. In the brown booklet, there are examples of some senior portraits and other portraits that I have taken in recent weeks. In all, took nearly fifty senior portraits for seniors in more than four towns between August and November. Additionally, at the very end of the booklet are other examples of my portrait work. In the green booklet are first examples of my fine art photography; I sell these images as framed prints. As you move through the same booklet you will find some examples of my sport photographs. During each sports season, I am very busy with the demands of parents.

I believe that my submission is a strong reflection of my potential for success at WPI because it shows that I am an independent, self motivated, organized, and creative individual; which are essential qualities for success in college. My submission reflects that I am an independent individual because I have constructed an entire business of my own, without the help of anyone else. I relied on no one else in order to succeed as an entrepreneur. I believe this quality of independence will help me to succeed at WPI because I will apply the same method I used to succeed in constructing a business by myself in order to do the best I can at WPI.

Furthermore, my submission also shows that I am self motivated. Without my own self motivation, I never would have succeeded in constructing a working business. At first, my business started off slow, but I did not let that get me down. I was motivated enough to make my business work by marketing myself better. Eventually, I established a working network of customers, but without being motivated, I never would have been able to. I believe that this quality of self motivation will help me to succeed at WPI because, even if classes get tough, I know that I will be able to succeed because I am self motivated.

Additionally, my submission also reflects that I am very organized. Because I manage my own business, it is extremely important that I stay well organized. It is important that I stay organized because during my busiest, I could have anywhere from ten to fifteen orders of pictures, each with nearly two-hundred pictures each. If I was not organized, then all of those pictures would get mixed up and everyone might get the wrong pictures. I ensure that a situation such as that never happens by following a very strict system. By utilizing electronic tagging for my images, I can keep them organized. Each image has a specific tag that relates to a five digit code that each customer has, for example: John Deer might have the code 12118. The first two numbers represent the month the photo shoot took place, the second two represent the day and the third represents the year. In addition, each five digit code is accompanied by a letter, either A, B, C, D, or E.

A represents that the picture has just been uploaded to the computer and has not been process yet. B represents an image that has been reviewed by the customer as an image they like and would like processed. C represents an image that I feel as though the customer would like processed. D represents and image that has been processed. Finally, E represents an image that is been fully processed and reviewed by the customer; the image is ready to be printed.

The five digit code and letter system is essential for keeping my image processing organized. Moreover, each five digit code is linked to a calendar that organizes the date each photo shoot took place and also gives information on the current status of the images from the shoot; whether or not I have processed them or not, or if the customer has reviewed the images or even if they are ready to print. In addition, all of my images are backed up onto three hard-drives to ensure that I do not lose any images at all. I believe that this level of organization strongly reflects my potential for success at WPI. By being organized in college, I can ensure that every assignment will be done to the fullest by utilizing a system similar to the one that I have set up for my business.

In addition, I also believe that my submission is a strong reflection of my creativity. As a photographer, I have to be creative in order to ensure my customers the best product possible. My creativity is explicitly shown in some of the images I have provided, especially in my works of fine art. I believe that my creativity is a strong indication that I will succeed at WPI because this quality is essential in the field of engineering; which is the field I plan on focusing in at WPI.

In conclusion, I believe that my submission is a strong reflection of my potential to succeed at WPI because I possess all of the qualities that are essential for success in college. I believe that I can apply the qualities that I have utilized in my photography business to truly flourish at WPI.

Undergraduate / Common App Activities short answer ("cultivating coral") [6]

Prompt: please elaborate on one of your activities...

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some insight on what I have so far... thanks.

I have been cultivating coral for about 6 years now. So what exactly do I mean by cultivating coral? Well, coral cultivation is the process of growing coral, a diverse class of marine organisms, in a glass fish tank. Coral cultivation involves replicating the natural conditions of the ocean. Attaining these conditions is the easy part, but maintaining them takes a vast knowledge of chemical sciences and of the corals natural ecosystem.

Additionally, my hobby has also grown into a business. For the past four years I have been a member of the Boston Reefers Society. As a member of the society I have provided many other members with coral that I have grown, in exchange for money. At one point, I made nearly fifteen-hundred dollars in one day. My experience with coral cultivation has taught me a lot about aquatic chemistry and marine biology.

Undergraduate / my grandmother's life truly influenced mine [7]

Prompt...
Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

I never realized how much my grandmother's life truly influenced mine until recently. When I was a young boy my grandmother used to babysit me every day. As a child, I was very curious, and my grandmother supported my curiosity. I would often roam around her backyard, picking and prodding at the grass, searching for bugs. I truly enjoyed the freedom I had in her backyard. However, it was not until we left the yard and entered the kitchen that I really became excited.

My grandmother's cabinets were often filled with everything and anything a young boy would want to make a mess with. However, she was not scared at all of what I might do with the contents of her cabinets; she let me make all the mess I wanted. On one specific occasion, I vividly remember the first time I mixed vinegar and baking soda. I had taken an entire bottle of vinegar and added it to an entire box of baking soda. The result of this combination was devastating to my grandmother's kitchen but not to my grandmother. Instead of scolding me for my actions, she supported them. She understood my curiosity and my obsession for understanding how things worked.

The encouragement that my grandmother gave me greatly affected my interests in chemistry today. As I grew older, she continued to facilitate my curiosity by encouraging me to think on my own. Whenever I asked a question about something she would always tell me she did not know the answer. Consequently, I would have to find out the answer for myself. Looking back, she blatantly knew many of the answers to my questions, but instead of simply telling me the answer each time, she chose to let me figure them out by myself. With this, my curiosity continued to develop.

I certainly have come a long way from mixing vinegar and baking soda on her kitchen floor. My current interests in chemistry are expressed vividly in one of my hobbies, reef keeping, which involves the replication of the natural reef biome in a glass tank. A vast knowledge of chemical sciences is important to ensure the tank's water parameters and climate emulates that of a natural reef biome. The regular mixing of chemicals to add to a tank is required to maintain pristine water conditions. Yes, I still do get to mix baking soda and vinegar, which are essential components needed to imitate natural reef conditions. I have been reef keeping now for about six years and my interests in chemistry have grown even stronger over the past six years. I truly owe the root of this development to one person, my grandmother.

Without her unique support, I never would have developed such a passion for understanding the world around me. My grandmother truly has been a large influence in my life.

Well, I was just wondering if someone could tell me what they thought of this essay... what does it tell you about me? :D any errors?

Thank in advance,
Donal.
