UIUC Essay #2: Being a chief designer...... [2]
In an essay of 300 words or less, choose one extra curricular activity, work experience, or community service project from the list you provided on the application and explain why you initially chose it, why you continued with it, and how you benefit from it.
I have always wanted to become a designer, because designers have such freedom on their canvases and no boundaries. Any successful designer always brings us an innovative and creative world filled with inspirational ideas. I had never doubted my perspective regarding the designers' job until I had a practice try myself over the winter break last year.
I made a big step forward on the pathway of pursuing my dream of being a designer on the day I was selected to be the chief designer of the Student Diary Club 2008-2009 in my school. Sooner than I expected, my first hesitation came in when I realized that the designers' canvas does have certain boundaries. For example, even though I was the chief designer, I still had to consult the diary's cover page design idea with the school's senior management. My design got rejected by the school principal three times in total, which put me into a discouraged and frustrated state for quite a while. Fortunately, I was working with a student team that prevented me from feeling lonely or unassisted. Over and over again, we eventually came up with a design which both we and the school management were happy about. Duly, I overcame the obstacles on my pathway to the final edition of the student diary for printing.
After all, I understood that to become an eligible designer not only requires the professional knowledge and original thoughts, but also the ability to negotiate as well. Nowadays, a clear canvas might be promising, but an unlimited size of canvas is impractical. I believe, if the pencil is requisite for all designers, then negotiation acts like an eraser on designers' career canvas.
