Graduate / I've been told that women can not have a career in surgery. SOP for a British university [5]

Hi everyone.

I wrote this SOP for a university application. But I am not sure about it.
I understand that SOP should not be too formal and must grab the attention of admission experts.
It is advisable to be written in a story form to make it more enjoyable and memorable. Of course you must answer all the important questions they asked you to answer.

I tried to do all that, but I am not sure I did.

Would you please check it for me.

Thanks.

learning laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques

Many people have told me that women can not have a career in surgery, but this did not dissuade me from pursuing my dream, and following my passion regardless of what other people think or say.

What attract me to surgery, is that it is a medical speciality that involves manual and instrumental manipulation to treat patients, it has crafting and artistic elements that make it enjoyable for me than other medical specialities.

After graduation from medical school, I worked for three years in the surgical department of the BZT, a newly opened hospital in my city.
I worked hard with my colleagues to help start the surgical department.
I was an enthusiastic and active member in the team, and worked tirelessly to provide our patients with optimum healthcare service. I found caring and treating of patients is extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

I was always eager to participate in the academic activities held in the department, and ready to prepare for any seminar or tutorial, when I was asked to.

I had the opportunity to assist in many operations, particularly laparoscopic operations, such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
It was in that time I became fascinated and intrigued by the laparoscopic techniques and the concept of minimally invasive surgery. I wanted to do more than just hold the camera for the senior surgeon or close the small incisions at the end of the operation. I longed to have formal laparoscopic training, and learn more about minimally invasive surgery in general.

During that period I recognised that surgery is a broad speciality, with diverse subspecialties, and constantly evolving new techniques. I realized that there are numerous options, and a good prospect in surgery.

I tried to enrol in a master course in X, but most master programmes had been cancelled, because the doctors who were directing master programmes were foreigners and left the country after 2011 events.

When Chevening Scholarship were started in my country, I start to look for master programmes that meet the scholarship requirements, and help me gain the skills and the knowledge I need to progress in my career.

I was thrilled when I found the Minimally Invasive and Robotics Surgery master programme. It is a flexible programme that can be finished in one year, (a requirement for the Chevening scholarship). It provides laparoscopic and robotic simulation training in the YY centre, an internationally recognised training and research centre, specialised in minimally invasive surgery.

I also heard about the director of YY centre, professor Tim Tom, a famous pioneer of keyhole surgery.
I couldn't wish for a better place for learning laparoscopic and minimally invasive techniques.
Furthermore, the course offers teaching of research methods and designs, which I believe will be extremely beneficial.
I am confident that this course will have a tremendous effect on my clinical and professional skills, as I'm intending to return to clinical practice in hospitals.

The Postgraduate Medical Institute of this university has advanced facilities, such as skills rooms and operating theatre, another factor attracted me to this university, in addition to being welcoming university for international students.

I have always admired British culture, traditions and history. Studying in the UK will be a throughly enjoyable experience, and will allow me to improve my English language skills. British universities are known for their long historical tradition and high standards of education. In fact, studying in the UK would be nothing less than a dream realised.

Essays / In what way will Scholarships contribute to your life career? [8]

Hi @bagusetyawan.
They are asking if the information and skills you will be learning in your study going to help you in your career. Or in other words, what's the relationship between the course you will study and your career. Is what you will learn in the course going to help you in your career.

I hope I have cleared this up for you.

Graduate / 'formulating natural products drugs' KGSP Letter of Introduction [11]

Well done @nono15. I enjoyed reading your essay.
Although I feel that you may need to make the reasons of choosing the KGSP programme more clear. It was not clear for me why you chose this master programme, because you love Korea ?

Good luck.

Undergraduate / Waterloo "reasons for choosing" essay - two portions answer [8]

Hi
Here are some mistakes I spotted :
Recieve misspelled should be receive
A high quality should be a high-quality( adjective )
Me scientific research should be my scientific research.
You should add a comma after the name (Dr. Vasudev Kalkunte Aatre ).
Another comma after For this reason.

I hope this was helpful.

Scholarship / Networking skills question of Chevening Scholarship [2]

Hi everyone ! Please, I need your help to check this essay. Feel free to recommend any suggestions.
The value of wide social network was proved to me when I first learned about the opening of a new hospital in my city through a family friend. I was newly graduated from medical school and looking for a suitable position to start my career as a junior surgeon.

I was told that medical staff recruiting for the hospital had begun, and I should apply as early as possible. Hence, I did and was fortunately accepted.

My employment in ( xx ) hospital was an enriching experience, I was privilege to work with amazing people with different nationalities, doctors and surgeons from France, Serbia, Ukraine, and nurses from Philippine.

Efficient networking and communication between different medical specialities are essential part of our career, because they help provide integral health care to our patients.
My networking skills allowed me once to act quickly to save a patient's life. That day I was consulted by a friend working in the cardiovascular department, his elderly patient was complaining of abdominal pain. After I had examined his 70 years old patient, I noticed a suspicious pulsation in his abdomen. Alarmed by the possibility of a serious condition like aortic aneurysm, I immediately contacted the senior surgeon in my team, who was an excellent French surgeon, I told him about the patient and my suspicion. He went with me and examined the patient, and was convinced that the patient needed urgent surgical intervention.

My friend was pleased with my quick response that helped save his patient.
I understand that networking is essential for career development, my past experience prove that I had the needed skills and the enthusiasm to engage around me, and that I enjoy knowing people from different cultures.

As a Chevening scholar, I will have the opportunity to meet professionals from different countries, particularly surgeons and doctors. An excellent chance to learn from their experiences, and to share our knowledge and the means to overcome similar obstacles in our countries. This environment is a breeding ground for new ideas and initiatives.

Being a member of Chevening community is a privilege and an exciting experience. I'll be committed to assist and motivate other scholars through different activities.

Thanks !

Scholarship / Surgical and Interventional Science - Chevening Scholarship essay ( university courses ) [4]

Hi everyone ! It's my first post in this amazing forum. I learned a lot by reading comments on essay similar to mine. I specially would like to thank the EssayForum contributor Louisa (vangiespen) for her informative great comments on other essays.

I would appreciate any comment on my following essay.

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future.

*Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form (minimum word count: 50 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

Chevening Scholarship provides a rare opportunity to enhance my surgical training, and to gain invaluable skills and knowledge, that I shall never have access to in my country.

As a junior surgeon, I chose three courses that offer training in advanced surgical skills, in addition to providing the basics of surgical research and research methodology.

My first choice is the Surgical and Interventional Science MCs course at UCL, one of the best ten universities in world.
This course gives a unique opportunity to learn about microsurgery and robotic surgery. Training on these advanced surgical techniques is not available in Libya, therefore acquiring these skills will set me apart from other surgeon, and will give me the chance to transfer these techniques to others, and to contribute to the surgical practice in my country.

The second course is the Surgical Skills and Sciences MSc at Queen Mary university.
This course offers training in basic and advance laparoscopic and endoscopic skills, in addition to providing invaluable information about conducting surgical research.

During my work in the surgical department, I had the chance to assist in many laparoscopic surgeries, I have always been amazed and fascinated by the laparoscopic techniques, I spent long time watching on screens how senior surgeons manipulate the long stick-like tools inside the abdomens of patients, while I hold the camera for them.

The course is my dream opportunity to acquire laparoscopic techniques and skills. I have always been interested in.
The third course is Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery MCh at Anglia Ruskin university. This course is also focus on the concept of minimally invasive techniques, as well as laparoscopic stimulation training.

As it can be observed all courses aimed at the idea of minimally invasive techniques in surgery, which match my interest in the concept, and my ambition to gain the skills and the knowledge that will help me advance in my career as a surgeon.

Thanks!
