Scholarship / Chevening Scholarship - Career plan! I have a vision how to implement it in my city. [7]

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans...
PS: I have +22 words and need to narrow it down!

I the last 20 years I've seen my city grown into a concrete jungle; there are no clear plans and laws regarding how cities should develop. Public spaces and sustainability hasn't been a priority either, so inhabitants don't have a chance to relate to the most sensible and human part of the city.

In order to find solutions, I plan to join the research program at my alma mater (UNET) and create a project directed to the revitalization of public spaces in our city, outlining steps like: Diagnosis, community engagement, design-execution and expansion. This program would approach this issue in two angles: urban design and community participation. I've experienced firsthand that community-oriented participation, is the key when it comes to creating a change.

The first thing to do is to make a diagnosis of the current state of the public spaces and how they respond to the social-environmental context (Function, design, mobility and sustainability). After that, comes a phase where communities engage to participate in the design process. Here, local people have the opportunity to get involve and share their vision on what they would like to see/do in this areas, that way the design can truly reflect the community's identity. After collecting all this information, comes the technical part of the program, the design should attend not only the factors evaluated during the diagnosis, but keep a solution that is citizen-friendly enhancing the character of the context, playing with the landscape-environment to go on board with sustainable proposals. For me personally, is important to involve students in this project, so I think it could be beneficial to allow undergraduate students to join this program, especially those who could address this project as their thesis research.

For the execution, I would like to reach government related institutions that could carry on with the construction side of the project, following the guidelines offered by the research program. This also opens opportunities for locals in each community to find employment and participate in an active kind of way.

Universities usually have a budget for research programs. Although, I think it would be interesting to reach ONGs like Rotary and motivate them to support this project offering financial aid through a fundraising campaign. Another great target is to approach corporations and companies that look forward to lower their taxes by donating or sponsoring non-profit projects. These funds could be use not only for the research program but to the construction/revitalization of these public spaces.

Regarding the timeframe of this project, I believe it could take one year to design the program, summit it to the university research board and assemble the team that would help me lead it. Once the program is settled, I estimate that we could get on board with three different public spaces during the first year of research, taking each of these projects to full design competition.

One of the advantages of this program is that it has the possibility to expand in the future; it would be remarkable to see this program reach bigger sectors of the city, especially those outcast areas (slums) that lack of a defined urban plan.

Writing Feedback / It is proved, that the rise of public sports facilities boosts up awareness of public health [2]

@WasishaSisha

Hello WasushaSisha, I think your statement is very valid. I think you should make a little change. in the first paragraph, I think it would look better to say "People think that the increase of sports facilities is the best way to develop public health" read your essay and make sure you're not repeating words so often. try to find synonyms, so you don't have to repeat yourself. Good luck!

Scholarship / Why study in the UK - New Castle University and Birmingham City University [7]

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future.

Architecture has the ability to branch itself in different areas, that gives architects the opportunity to study diverse fields and reach solutions in a more efficient way. As student I had design/project as the main subject in each semester, in hand with other modules that focused on history, urban-environmental studies, graphic design and new technologies. During my third year in the university I started to feel more interested in urban-environmental studies and how it impacts the life style of people. I got fascinated by Landscape architecture and how it balances the design of the city with the nature of the environment and the need of society to interact with each other. As time passed, I learnt more about this area and how it brings cities to be livelier, artistic and sustainable.

After graduating I had the chance to be part of the design team of a theme park in the State where I live. Working on a 14 hectares canvas became the perfect opportunity to apply sustainable principles, in a project that depended solely on the interaction with the landscape. This project made my job much more fun, since it was something I felt really passionate about. Because it was a recreation-touristic complex, I got the chance to get involved with the ministry of environment and Tourism; which helped me understand construction regulations regarding ecological surroundings and land management.

I chose to take a master degree because, even though one never stops learning, I feel like I'm not done with academia. After exercising my career for almost 5 years, I realize that I've reach a more mature concept about the role of architects in the society and the responsibility that comes with that title.

Universities in the UK are known worldwide because of their high standard programs and broad range of courses for international students, which could encourage the development of my potential and abilities. I've chosen New Castle University and Birmingham City University because they aim to apply essential skills in critical thinking, offer strong foundation in practical/theoretical modules related to urban design, sustainability, social impact, research methods and professional practice. Both universities invest in outstanding facilities that improve the learning process, but most importantly, they count with a high qualified staff from multicultural backgrounds that guarantee a world class education.

I selected masters related to landscape architecture and sustainable design, because in the last 20 years the cities in Venezuela have grown into concrete jungles; there are no clear plans and laws regarding where and how cities should expand and develop. Public spaces and sustainability hasn't been a priority either, so inhabitants don't have a chance to relate to the most sensible and human part of the city.

I want to create open spaces that respond to a social context including the environmental surroundings. My plan is to rehabilitate public areas in the city, so people have a reason to go outside and connect to where they live, engaging in sustainable designs with a low carbon foot print.

Scholarship / Chevening is going to help me expand my network and relations with people who stick with their goals [8]

Hello Mary, thanks for your review. I've made some changes according to your suggestions, you're totally right of course. Let me know what you think, This is what I came up with:

Part of my job as an architect is to create bonds with people, with my clients in order to assure that their wishes and goals are truly well oriented in the design, with engineers to guarantee that the project will be a whole function master piece, with the community so my ideas won't affect their lifestyle in a negative way nor compromise the environment, but most importantly is the bond I create with myself as a professional and individual. I know what makes myself tick and always try to find the motivation in those around me so I can expand my point of view. I started networking a very long time ago, without noticing that I was actually doing it.

Volunteering helped me not only to meet people; it pushed me to boost my social skills, without being afraid of communicating in different languages and unusual scenarios. My work with Rotaract is a clear example of that.

Originally the design of the Mobility awareness campaign was part of a project I had with my friends in the university. We applied the campaign in our faculty and it had really good results. I thought this campaign had a great potential if applied in other communities, so I reached out to Rotaract and presented them the idea of expanding this campaign in our community. They liked the idea and got on board. One of my roles was to serve as link between the University and Rotaract, my team had their own network, so we took advantage of it and got different companies to donate money so we could carry on with or project to a bigger scale.

This second part of the campaign was supervised by teachers of the Universidad Nacional Experimental del Tachira (UNET), and executed by the members of the Rotaract club. As Rotaractors, we also wanted to bring something new to the campaign, so we came up with the idea of incorporating the Sign design contest, which was a success. Through our Rotarians mentors we created alliances with the mayor, in order to apply the campaign forward to other communities. It was a big step to have a connections to the government, that way we could get them involve in other projects later on. Networking helped us to succeed in our goal, linking: Academia (UNET) - ONG (Rotary/Rotaract) - Government, in the solution of a problem.

In the future, I would like to use these alliances and new ones, in finding solutions to other problems in my community. I'm a firm believer that if you have an idea, is easier to make it truth if you have the support of others.

I'm certain that Chevening is going to help me expand my network and relations, so I can bring the best of my potential and keep working in community projects and motivating others to do so as well.

Mary, thanks for answering. I tried to relate somehow my leadaership/influence essay with the networking one, I hope readers can easily perceive that.
this is what my last (so far) version of the networking essay looks like. Once again thanks for sharing your thought with me, I really appreciate it!

I hope you like it.
Best regards

Volunteering helped me not only to meet people; it pushed me to boost my social skills, without being afraid of communicating in different languages and unusual scenarios. My work with Rotaract is a clear example of this.

In 2011 I was in charge of the design of a mobility awareness campaign for the community service program at my university. It comprehended a diagnose of the current state of the roads in a community that we took as sample, the design of posters and brochures regarding the mobility problem, which would be distributed in high schools, and finally, engaging in giving talks to other students regarding the mobility problem and the solutions involving our roles as actors in the mobility process (pedestrians, public /private drivers and transit officers).

We applied the campaign in our faculty and it had really good results. I thought this campaign had a great potential if applied in other communities, so I reached out to Rotaract and presented them the idea of expanding this campaign in our community. They liked the idea and got on board. I worked not only as leader of the campaign but also as the link between the University and Rotaract.

Scholarship / Chevening is going to help me expand my network and relations with people who stick with their goals [8]

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community ...

Living abroad as an exchange student and volunteering changed me forever. It helped me not only to meet people from all over the world, but to connect to others, accepting and learning from their culture, language, religion and careers. It pushed me to boost my social skills, without being afraid of communicating in different languages and unusual scenarios.

Therefore, I chose to work with Rotaract club to keep in touch with the needs of my community. In 2011 our Rotaract club got involved in the design of a mobility awareness campaign. It comprehended a diagnose of the current state of the roads in a community that we took as sample, the design of posters and brochures regarding the mobility problem, which would be distributed in high schools, a sign design contest and finally, engaging in giving talks to teenagers regarding the mobility problem and the solutions involving our roles as actors in the mobility process (pedestrians, public /private drivers and transit officers).

I realized that to carry on and succeed with this project, we had to reach out for people from different institutions and organizations. The design of the campaign was supervised by teachers of the Universidad Nacional Experimental del Tachira (UNET), and executed by the members of the Rotaract club Dr. Pablo Puky in the city of San Cristobal; our goal was also to establish alliances with the mayor, in order to apply the campaign forward to other communities. Networking helped us to succeed in our goal, to meet people and link Academia (UNET) - ONG (Rotary/Rotaract) - Government in the solution of a problem.

In the future, I would like to keep finding solutions to the problems in my community. I'm a firm believer that if you have an idea, is easier to make it truth if you have the support of others. By exchanging services you can have a win-win situation for everybody.

I'm certain that Chevening is going to help me expand my network and relations with people who stick with their goals, so I can bring the best of my potential and keep working in community projects and motivating other to do so as well.

Scholarship / Highlight what you believe to be the most important issue facing your country today [2]

Hello Odenigbo, I dont think that enunciating each problem and the possible solution is the best way to appoach the answer of the prompt. try to write an essay that has a structure (oppening-body-clousure). you dont have to address all the problems you identify in you country, focus on the most important (maybe 3) and link them so they look as a whole. I think you have great ideas about how to find the solutions of this problems, just make it more cohesive so readers will be committed to your ideas and wont get lost by the content.

wish you all the best... good luck!

Writing Feedback / The press tend to report about the lives and relationships of public figures [4]

Hello Septia, I like the topic of your essay, however I think you should put attention into how you're delivering the message.it looks like you wrote the essay in one language and then used google translate to have it in english, Try to structure your essay in a better way. remmeber it should have an opening-body-clousure. Try to not repeat the same words, use more synonyms so it looks more fluent.

I would change your opening line with something like "Social media has the advantage to reach many people in diffferent angles, the press tends to pay extra attention to what celebrities are doing instead of focusing on what society is looking for"

I think you could use the example of the painter in a better way try something like: "For instance, there is a painter who comes from a small district in Yogyakarta. He was born with no arms, however his disability didnt stopped him to carry on with his dream and strated painting using his legs"

try this changes and rivise the whole thing...
best wishes

Scholarship / I have always said that architecture is my passion but volunteering has my heart. Applying Chevening [5]

Mary, thank you once again for your review. you are totally right, Rotaract represents ina better way the impact that Volunteering has brought to my life.... I have edited once again my essay and this is what I came up with. I hope this looks better than the previous one. I would apreciate it if you could take your time to read it.

Ps: I still have to edit it to 500 words which is a bit challenging!
Thank you very much!
Best regards from Venezuela!

I have always said that architecture is my passion but volunteering has my heart. I started volunteering in 2008 when I joined Rotaract club, which is the junior division of Rotary club international for people between the ages 18-30. Our Rotaract club was conformed by young people of various ages with different careers and fields of study. I started as a simple active member and later on I even got the chance to be part of the directive board.

During my time in Rotaract I was still studding architecture, so I tried to mix both things the best way I could. In 2011 I was in charge of applying a mobility awareness campaign that I designed with my friends at the university, the members of Rotaract showed their interest in this matter and we took action expanding this campaign in high schools and other Rotaract clubs in the city. The goal was to teach teenagers the deficiencies in our urban mobility plan due to the growth rate of vehicles, the absence of a suitable infrastructure and the lack of awareness by our citizens. We decided to approach teenagers because they would be the next generation driving in the city and could also bring the message about the current problem home, motivating their parents to get involve. It wasn't easy to decide how to reach teenagers, so besides the talks regarding the Mobility program, we invited them to be part in our Sign Contest.

The contest aimed to create a proper sign system for an area of the city called Barrio Obrero, an important district that connects to the down town and suffered the absence of a proper sign system that identifies the number and name of each road. We encourage teenagers in the junior and senior class of different high schools to join in and submit their design in our contest. We accepted one proposal per high school, evaluated it with the help of a team conformed by the president of the Rotary club, the members of Rotaract and a body of professors of our university. The winning proposal was presented to the major so the government could execute it.

Most of my team mates though that it could be hard to get the kids attention, that's why we included them in the contest, so it could be more dynamic and not just another lecture. For me it was important that teenagers could speak up and be part of the process in the campaign, no matter how little their role was. I realized that one day these kids would be the leading generation of a country, so if we wanted to see changes into a long term period, we had to start creating the change in their minds now.

This campaign taught me to work with people from different organizations and backgrounds; it let me direct the strengths of my team and motivate them to keep exploring their skills and abilities, but most importantly it let me be open to ideas/criticism, staying strong to the goals and finding pride in seeing others succeed.

Scholarship / I have always said that architecture is my passion but volunteering has my heart. Applying Chevening [5]

Chevening is looking for individuals that will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.

I have always said that architecture is my passion but volunteering has my heart. I started volunteering in 2008 when I joined Rotaract club, which is the junior division of Rotary club international for people between the ages 18-30. My Rotaract club was conformed by young people of various ages with different careers and fields of study. I started as a simple active member and later on I even got the chance to be part of the directive board. We used to organized events with charity purpose, especially for poor children/orphans and elder care. It was always a huge deal for me to do these activities with Rotaract, but it felt much special to mix my skills and field of study with it. Volunteering gives you some sense of purpose, it helps to connect to the community and make it a better place. On that same year I took volunteering to another level, I volunteered for FIFA during the Women's world cup in Germany. I had the chance to work at the stadium in the city of Dresden, where I was assigned to work as a media and communication volunteer. Fixing mixed zones, preparing press conferences and being a language support to the press and photographers became my every day thing. It was amazing to work on something that was so new to me and had nothing to do with architecture. I gave the best of me and learnt that even though I would become an architect later on, my career shouldn't define me, I could take chances and learn from it to be a better person. With this experience I learnt to work as a team, with people from around the world that had not only different nationalities but different believes religions and languages. I learnt to work under pressure in a field that was so different to what I was used to, and that exactly was what made the experience so much better. I got addictive to volunteering in sports events, that's why I keep doing it. I had the opportunity to volunteer not only in Germany, but in Poland during UEFA Euro Poland-Ukraine 2012 and later in FIFA World cup Brazil 2014. I've meet the best people in the world in this events, I have felt like part of a huge family and learnt from living in the most uncommon places and even though feeling at home.
