Dear Immigration Officer,

Letter of Explanation

My name is xxxxxx, I completed my first degree in Accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. I write with respect to my application for a Canadian study permit as I have been offered admission to pursue a two-year Post-baccalaureate diploma in Business Management at the Shannon School of Business in Cape Breton university. I am a young result driven professional with research interests relating to the integration of technical knowledge of management to improve the fields of business.

I believe enrolling for a Post graduate diploma program after completing my bachelors degree will enable me gain the relevant knowledge and skills that will help me succeed in my career as a business manager. After the completion of my undergraduate degree, I was mobilized for a one-year mandatory national youth service scheme (NYSC) setup to involve Nigerian graduates in national building and development of the country. Afterwards I assumed a role as an Accounting Officer at African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST), O.A.U Campus Ile-Ife. Considering my role in the organization, I realized it was very important for me to have an international education to accelerate my career and that is why I have decided to further my education abroad. Similarly, it would be a competitive advantage for me over my peers to study abroad as I will gain more exposure which will boost my career as a business manager when I return to my home country.

WHY CANADA?
I want to study in Canada so I can benefit from the excellent education system that encourages cross-disciplinary studies and the development of transferable skills. A degree in Canada gives me the opportunity to pursue a professional career in any country as Canada is recognized worldwide for its outstanding quality of education from elementary school to post-secondary studies. Another reason why I prefer to study in Canada is its flexibility of education and language. It offers flexible courses and I am confident that I can speak and communicate in English which is the primary language of teaching in Canada. Also, Canada is considered one of the safest countries in the world for international students. It is a welcoming country that embraces people who come from varied ethnic groups with different cultures and lifestyle.

2. WHY CAPE BRETON UNIVERSITY?
Cape Breton University (CBU) is a public university located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the academic home of over 2,000 international students representing more than 50 countries. The University offers world-renowned business programs at the Shannon School of Business (SSOB).

From my research, the university is made up of skilled practitioners and accomplished academics, who have practiced on Cape Breton Island and around the world. As a university that is dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, I believe CBU will provide me with an advantage of outstanding experiential learning and research opportunities in a supportive academic environment.

It is important for me to develop relationships with the faculty at my school. Cape Breton's small class sizes will enable me develop genuine relationships with my professors. The Shannon School of Business also gives opportunities to learn from one another through real-life business experiences, Co-op Placements and community-based projects.

3. WHY POST-BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT?

After the completion of my undergraduate degree in accounting, I am interested in expanding my knowledge base and enrolling for a post-baccalaureate diploma in business management at the Cape Breton university will prepare me for a career in business.

This program will strengthen my management skills for a career in the private or public sector. Also a post-baccalaureate diploma program will create a unique opportunity for me to get hands-on experience through the completion of an internship or a capstone project of my choice.

Another reason why I am inclined towards pursuing this course is because I get to study modules such as Financial Accounting, introduction to Business, Managerial Accounting, Finance, Strategic financial management to name a few that will help me pursue my goal as a business manager in my home country.

I am sure studying this course will add value to my existing understanding of business and also provide me with the right knowledge and skills to become a successful business manager in my home country.

4. FUNDING MY EDUCATION

Based on the financial implications of studying in Canada, the total estimate of the tuition is CAD $27,430 from which I have made a deposit of CAD $10,000. My father Mr. Xxxxxx who is an xxxxxxx will be responsible for funding my tuition and my living expenses for the complete 2 years of my education in Canada. I have attached all relevant documents and sufficient fund details in my application.

Upon successful completion of my program, I intend to return to Nigeria with the knowledge and skills of business earned in Canada. I would like to return as a skilled business professional with international exposure to join a reputable firm in Nigeria that will appreciate my international experience.

In the unforeseeable future, I see myself establishing my own business which will serve as a way of contributing towards the economic development of Nigeria. I believe the international exposure will help me achieve my goals and I would be grateful if I am giving the opportunity to pursue a higher education at the Cape Breton University for a post-baccalaureate diploma in business management.

I promise to abide by the rules and regulations of Canada and humbly request that you grant me a study permit in Canada.

The entire letter is not going to be believable to the consular or visa officer upon first, second, or repeated readings. The reason is simple. The applicant fails to make the case as to why he has to undergo masters degree studies in Canada when he can undergo the same course of study in his home country of Nigeria. The letter itself provides template responses of the weakest kind of the questions being asked. It fails to prove any sort of believable professional and personal reason for needing to go halfway across the world for additional studies. Most of the information provided is based on research, which means the student has not really considered the actual depth of reasons for studying in Canada other than wanting to leave Nigeria. There is no study plan, no career plan, no reason provided to indicate that he will leave Canada after he has completed the course. The entire presentation will result in a rejection. It must be totally revised to provide 0 template responses and researched information. The responses need to be analytical and personal in basis.
