Hey, guys. I really need your help on this one. Would you give a feedback on my essay? The only thing they state is:

Motivation letter of maximum 500 words.

The motivation letter should mainly focus on your academic interest in the GLODEP program and what you hope to achieve through studying in the program. Additional relevant information can also be included, and you may refer to your Curriculum Vitae to save space. Please refrain from describing the GLODEP program unless doing so is relevant to your argument.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Living in Maranhão (Brazil), where one among five people is in extreme poverty, I decided to study Law at the undergraduate level to use it as a tool to promote social justice in vulnerable communities. To deepen my studies in themes such as inequality, poverty, and regional imbalance, I would like to enroll for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master degree in International Development Studies.

As an undergraduate Law student at the Federal University of Maranhão, I attended Economics, Economic Law, and Political Science courses. Along with my experience as an intern and a researcher in different organizations, I also worked as a coordinator at the Red Cross Maranhão, guiding a multidisciplinary team of volunteers in missions to provide humanitarian services in the countryside. In one of these missions, my team was leaving the last community we served, and children started running after our bus as they were asking us to stay. It was like a reminder that my purpose is to promote policies in communities under developing issues.

My interest in international development started in the fourth year of Law school when I got a scholarship, provided by the government of Maranhão, to study English in the USA. I went beyond my language studies and volunteered at Project Citizenship, an NGO from Massachusetts (USA) that helps migrants become US citizens. My experience in this organization inspired me to write my bachelor thesis that studied the policy transfer among Latin American countries when it comes to migration rights.

Since 2019, I have worked as a pro bono lawyer, and I have also been a public servant at the Social Security Institute of Maranhão. I am responsible for controlling the payment of almost 4000 retirees. To improve the quality of my work, I attended courses, such as Behavioral Economics in Public Policies Development. Moreover, I have been developing my skills in quantitative analysis.

Along with my master's studies in GLODEP, I want to volunteer in local organizations in Chekz Republic, Italy, and France to experience different approaches to social justice. Moreover, in the fourth semester, I aim to pursue an internship spot at the non-academic associates of the consortium, specially WeWorld, an organization with developing programs in Latin America. The topic of my thesis would be The role of NGOs in policy transfer among Latin American countries.

After attending the GLODEP program, I aim to assume high-level positions in NGOs, such as OXFAM, analyzing data and implementing best practices on pro-poor and rights-based policies in developing countries. On my long-term goals, I plan to be a policy analyst at the Brazilian Ministry of Social Development to project public policies in Brazil and to transfer policies to other Latin American countries via Mercosur.

I believe the GLODEP program will equip me with the practical and academic knowledge to be the policy developer Latin America needs. Aswell, my experience in humanitarian organizations, in the public sector and my deep interest in researching policy transfer would make me a valuable asset to all Consortium partner Universities.

extreme poverty

vulnerable communities

These are the focal points of your interest in becoming a lawyer. However, your interests in law are too wide and varied. Bring it down to a solid and singular study level. Even though the topics you will be studying in the masters program will be varied, your thesis will be based on a singular theme. Therefore, your study focus must immediately indicate the what and why of your reason to seek familiarity with the program.

In one of these missions,

Irrelevant. The discussion does not truly highlight a motivating factor for advanced studies. Do not try to add information just for dramatic purposes. If it is not clearly related to the course requirements, it does not need to be in the presentation.

@Holt
Thank you so much for your honest review. I narrowed my topic to a singular theme as you suggested. I decided to talk only about extreme poverty in Latin America and how policy tranfer can decrease it.
