My research topic is: The decrease of Ho Chi Minh City university students' good results in their study can be blamed on the overuse of Facebook. Here is my introduction:
The world is vast with a lot of things worthwhile to explore and human is always intrigued to learn about them. Therefore, non-stop learning is very a crucial and indispensable matter to all. This is even more precisely to students, the ones who will devote and take responsibility for building a finer future. With the support of a growing and modern world, students nowadays can do their utmost in studying. However, the rapidly evolving world also has negative effects on their performance, for example, social factors and technologies. Social media is a breakthrough in communication technology development and its use has become popular especially among students. Social media in general and facebook, in particular, was created for sharing and connecting people purposes, but also was included in the effects. Specifically, the overuse of facebook might be blamed for the decrease in results of university students good results.
There have been many studies about the impact of Facebook on student performance. Helton (2011) did a study and found the correlation between time spent on facebook and GPA. The study statistical analysis showed that the more time students spend on facebook the lower their GPA seem to be. Rather (2013) interviewed 120 young people in India whether Facebook affected academic grades of the users, and found that the majority of the respondents were of the view that facebook using did affect academic grades as users spend most of their time online in browsing the site. Yap and Ramon (2014) reported in their study that being on facebook could make a student lose track of time and eventually lead that student to cram. The lack of study time due to hours on facebook will show a negative effect on the grades of students. Rouis, Limayem and Sangari (2014) also conducted a study done with 239 undergraduate students from Lulea University of Technology, and indicated that extensive use of facebook by students with extraverted personalities leads to poor academic performance. Much work has been done in many regions in the world; however, there was no such information that had been demonstrated in student achievement in Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, the need for an investigation into the using facebook reality of students in Ho Chi Minh City and effective solutions for the problem are indeed.
The objective of this report is to investigate the reality of using facebook among undergraduate students in Ho Chi Minh City and the bad effects of this on their academic results. A second goal was to discover some alternative solutions for the problem. It is hoped that the results of this research would be a warning about the depressing reality in the student learning process. Also, the application of the solutions described here should benefit for students in balancing their social media use in order to enhance their attitude to academic learning.
