Hello there,
My name is XXXXXXX, a Bachelor of Computer Science graduate from the University of Somalia (UNISO). Growing up in Mogadishu, Somalia, during a time of intense conflict, my family was forced to relocate multiple times, facing significant challenges such as limited access to education and safety. Despite these obstacles, I was fortunate to attend school an opportunity some of my older siblings did not have.
Throughout my studies, I developed a deep passion for digital innovation. In high school, I took basic computer training, where I learned how to use a computer and developed excellent typing skills. This early exposure sparked my interest in technology, leading me to pursue a degree in computer science.
In 2019, I expanded my knowledge beyond academics by working on freelance marketplaces, collaborating with online platforms and local startups. Through my freelancing network, I came across R.... Academy, a coding school where I met a group of 15 Somali girls aspiring to become web developers. Although they had acquired technical skills, they lacked professional application. In response, I developed a freelancing course, which is now part of the academy's curriculum.
During my third year at university, I connected with T.....ly, a U.S.-based NGO, through one of my freelance channels. They needed experienced English-Somali translators for humanitarian work. I worked closely with healthcare providers, attorneys, educators, and aid workers, breaking language barriers worldwide and ensuring access to essential services. Through ........., I supported refugee and immigrant communities, completing over 300 sessions with an average rating of 4.67/5 and earning a Certificate of Junior Volunteer an experience that reinforced my commitment to leveraging technology for social impact.
A pivotal moment in my tech journey came when I joined ....hub, Somalia's first innovation hub. Before joining, I attended the m........'s Tech Summit, an annual gathering connecting Somalia's digital innovators with the global tech industry. During discussions with the .....hub team, I identified their challenges in social media engagement and proposed a solution using AI-powered content tools to enhance their online presence. This initiative was highly successful, leading to greater engagement on platforms like Twitter and Facebook. As a result, I secured an internship at ....hub Limited, where I helped optimize websites, enhance organizational visibility, and transition from on-premises applications to cloud-based solutions increasing community engagement from 8,000 to 40,000 active social media users.
My professional journey has since expanded beyond Somalia. Moving to Ghana introduced me to diverse cultures and new technological environments. While working at Tele..........ce, I gained exposure to AI technologies, which deepened my understanding of their practical applications in solving real-world problems. This exposure further solidified my interest in Imaging and Artificial Intelligence.
Looking ahead, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Imaging program offers more than just academic growth it provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary learning experience that perfectly aligns with my career goals. The program's strong focus on AI-driven imaging, computer vision, and digital innovation will equip me with the technical expertise needed to revolutionize Somalia's technological landscape.
By joining this program, I will develop essential skills as a technology and AI specialist, working alongside professionals from diverse fields. Additionally, experiencing the dynamic cultures of three major European countries is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will broaden my perspective and deepen my understanding of EU values.
I believe I am a strong fit for this program, not only because I meet the required prerequisites but because, as an IT Lead, it aligns with my vision of driving technological innovation in Somalia. As a citizen, I feel a deep responsibility to tackle challenges in digital transformation and enhance technological capabilities in my country. The experiences I have gained navigating challenges, collaborating across cultures, and applying technology to real-world issues have shaped me into a determined and adaptable individual.
My freelancing background is a testament to my ability to communicate effectively with clients worldwide. Leading coding bootcamps at R..... Academy, I helped train young Somalis to develop tech solutions for community challenges. Since then, over 500 graduates have completed the program, many securing freelance work or positions in organizations like the UN. This demonstrates the lasting impact of my leadership at both local and international levels.
My long-term goal is to establish Innovisual Somalia, an initiative that will focus on leveraging Imaging technology, AI, and data science to drive community development. Through computer vision, medical imaging, and AI-driven solutions, I aspire to address real-world challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure creating practical, community-focused innovations that will have a lasting impact.
