Could you please review my study plan?
Name: xxx
Program: International Master's Degree Program for Molecular Medicine in Emerging Viral Infections (Chang Gung University)

Microorganisms and fermentation have captivated me since I was a child. Growing up in a traditional rice wine-making village exposed me to the art of fermentation, where the techniques for producing high-quality wine have been passed down through generations. The intricacies of microbial activity piqued my interest-how can yeasts make alcohol, and why does gas form during rice fermentation? These unsolved issues prompted me to investigate the field of microbiology. To follow my ambition, I enrolled at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), a famous university in Vietnam, where I studied bioengineering. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong foundation in microbial fermentation and molecular biology, with a specific emphasis on probiotic yeasts and their applications.
I've decided to enroll in Chang Gung University's International Master's Degree Program for Molecular Medicine in Emerging Viral Infections to further my knowledge of molecular medicine and virology. This program offers an unmatched opportunity to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying viral infections and their implications for treatment development. To prepare for the program's challenges, I created a systematic academic and research plan that will ensure I get both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
During my first year, I intend to take all mandatory and elective courses, including Special Topics in RNA Viruses, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Technologies and Advances in Emerging Viral Infections, and Seminar. These courses will provide a complete understanding of viral structure and replication, host-pathogen interactions, and emerging detection and therapeutic technologies. I will also select electives such as Advanced Bacteriology, Vaccine Development, Animal Models for Studying Emerging Infectious Diseases, and Practice in Emerging Virus Research and Detection. These electives align with my research interests and will equip me with advanced tools and techniques essential for studying viral infections. For example, vaccine development will deepen my understanding of the challenges and innovations in immunization strategies.
To ensure I excel in my coursework, I will allocate sufficient time for thorough preparation before attending lectures, including reviewing materials, identifying key concepts, and exploring relevant case studies to bridge theory with real-world applications. I will aim to complete all required and elective courses within the first two semesters of my program. Alongside my coursework, I will dedicate time to improving my Chinese language proficiency, ensuring that I can effectively communicate and collaborate with my professors, peers, and the research community. While focusing on academics during the first year, I will also explore the research laboratories at Chang Gung University to identify those aligned with my research interests. I will carefully assess their ongoing projects, methodologies, and expertise to find a lab that best fits my aspirations in molecular virology and probiotic research. Starting in the first semester of my second year, I will officially join a research lab under my professor's supervision. I will allocate 4-5 days per week to conducting hands-on laboratory experiments and the remaining time to thesis writing, data analysis, and any additional coursework. By immersing myself in the lab's activities, I aim to build a strong foundation in experimental techniques and scientific thinking. I will actively participate in lab meetings, scientific discussions, and collaborative projects to refine my research skills and gain valuable insights from my peers and mentors. These experiences will not only enhance my technical capabilities but also foster my ability to think critically and innovatively in addressing research challenges.
Building upon my academic preparation, I propose to conduct a research study titled "Investigating the antiviral potential of Saccharomyces boulardii against Rotavirus and Norovirus: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications." These viruses are major causes of viral gastroenteritis, particularly in children and immunocompromised individuals, yet treatment options remain limited to symptom management. Recent advancements in probiotics suggest that S. boulardii, a well-studied yeast, may offer novel therapeutic potential due to its immunomodulatory and antimicrobial properties. My research aims to evaluate the antiviral effects of S. boulardii on rotavirus and norovirus infectivity in human intestinal epithelial cells and investigate its underlying mechanisms. Using Caco-2 cell models, I will assess viral replication, cytokine expression, and cell viability in response to S. boulardii or its cell-free supernatant. Mechanistic studies will include viral entry inhibition assays and metabolomic analyses to identify bioactive compounds, such as short-chain fatty acids and exopolysaccharides. Additionally, I will explore its immunomodulatory effects by examining the production of antiviral cytokines like IFN-β and anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10. This multi-faceted approach is expected to demonstrate S. boulardii's ability to reduce viral replication, enhance cell viability, and modulate immune responses. These findings could uncover novel mechanisms of probiotic-mediated antiviral activity and support the development of yeast-based therapies for viral infections, opening new avenues for therapeutic applications beyond traditional probiotics.
After completing the program, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Molecular Virology or Immunology, focusing on host-pathogen interactions and therapeutic development for emerging viral infections. My long-term goal is to contribute to global health by developing probiotic-based therapies, functional foods, or other innovative solutions for viral diseases. I also aspire to strengthen scientific collaboration between Vietnam and Taiwan, bridging research communities and fostering academic exchange to address pressing health challenges in both countries.
Receiving a scholarship from Chang Gung University or the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) would provide invaluable financial support and motivation, allowing me to fully focus on my studies and research. This support would drive me to diligently execute my study plan and exceed academic and research expectations.
