writing a Reference Letter on behalf of Ms.XXX
To The High Commission,
I am honoured to provide a reference for Ms.XXX who has applied for the Chevening Scholarship to have Postgraduate Study in the UK. I have been appointed as Non-Terminal Airside Section Head in BB Airport since March 2017 and she has worked directly under my supervision since then. In my previous position in the Head Office of [Company's name], I have also engaged with her in several activities in AA Airport. It is no hesitation that she is a great asset for the company.
Before having her as my subordinate, being in charge of employee rotation in the Head Office, I have heard nothing but the good reports about her performance. Her previous Manager in AA Airport thought highly of her and demand the Head Office not to move her to another Airport. It was only when the Manager nearly retired that we had her transferred to the busier airport that will benefit with her proficiency, BB.
During her time in AA Airport, I had a chance to work with her on the assessment of new taxiway by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and on the Annual Performance Check conducted by the Head Office. She was very helpful and dependable. She developed good communication with DGCA and has a take-charge personality. It was a pleasure to work with her.
It is not until I have been a direct supervisor of her in BB Airport that I can attest her broad range of skills. She has a wide range of knowledge, learn very quickly, communicate her ideas clearly, and completely loyal and trustworthy.
Her latest key assignment was being the person in charge at "APEX in Safety", a peer review program conducted by Airport Council International (ACI) held in the last August. The airport's facilities compliance were reviewed by a Compliance Manager of Dubai Airport. Her comprehensive understanding of the airport facilities compliance with international and national regulations, good verbal communication skill in English, and ability to take responsible well enable her to perform the assignment satisfactorily even with little if not none supervision.
She also has a respectful manner that allows her to easily get along with others, not only her co-worker but also with people from other departments and other stakeholders that involved in the airport. It is a very helpful trait since our day-to-day works heavily involve another department or parties.
I have every confidence in her. I firmly believe obtaining a Master Degree in Air Transport Study in the UK and being connected to Chevening Network will provide her great opportunity that will benefit not only her self but also to Indonesia's Air Transport Industry.
I hope this information proves helpful. Should you require any information regarding XXX's qualification, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email address listed below.
Best regards,
Hai Sarah, i think the content is well written, however to make it better you should make a correction in some grammar.
Here is the example :
I have also engaged with ...
Good luck!
Her previous Manager in AA ...
Hi,
I will help you with your grammar in this case. I hope it is helpful for you :)
... highly of her and
demand (demanded) the Head Office ...
I think the word 'demand' would best be replaced by 'demanded' because it happened in the past. Meanwhile, the manager is now retired.... range of knowledge,
learn (learns) very quickly,
communicate (communicates) her ideas clearly, and
(is)completely loyal and trustworthy.
... another department or
parties (party).
... benefit not only
her self (to herself) but also to ...
Holt Educational Consultant - / 15384 This is a pretty good essay except, it seems to be based more on hearsay and your performance in other departments aside from the one where this person is your direct supervisor. The reviewer needs to read more of "I have observed her to be... in the performance of her duties." and "I am impressed by her ability to perform..." or even "I noticed that when placed in a stressful situation..." You see, the recommendation letter is not about your accomplishments but rather, your performance on the job that could translate into you being a student with strong moral, professional, and academic ethics. It is not a continuation of your professional biography, which is what you wrote here. Focus on your skills and talents. Use the ownership pronouns to have the person describe you. Most of all, make sure the letter doesn't sound like the applicant wrote it, which is immediately obvious in this letter at the moment. Recommendation letters are supposed to be independently written. Reviewers are trained to spot letters that the applicant wrote themselves and had someone else sign it. Yes, there are instances when recommendation letters are verified with a phone call so be very careful about developing this sort of letter. Distance yourself from the content as best as you can.
@Holt
I have to admit getting reference letter in English is pretty hard in my institution since not many people are very good with the language. Only some people in the Head Office are good in it and I did not regularly do direct work with them so I do not think they would be qualified to give me one. I actually made this one as a draft then read and translate it to my supervisor. She made some correction that I will post below. I do tell her that the committee might give her a call and she asked whether there will be a translator available.
Do you have any recommendation giving my circumstances?
Thank you for the input by the way :)
Holt Educational Consultant - / 15384 The letter that you wrote is acceptable at this point. It at least sounds like someone other than you wrote this letter. Which makes it a valid recommendation letter. As for your inquiry about a translator being on hand in case of a verification phone call, I am not privy to that information. I urge you to contact the Chevening secretariat in your home country or inquire about that concern via their FB or official website. They have people ready and willing to answer your queries during specific time frames. It would be best to get an authoritative response from them regarding the reference question you have. I don't dare hazard a guess regarding a response because that is too much of a risk to take. While you still have time to contact Chevening, I strongly recommend that you do so. Don't leave anything to chance as you have a lot riding on the recommendation letters as well. However, provided you supply 2 recommendations, and the other person speaks fluent English, I would not be so worried about the reference letter verification process. At least one of the referees will be able to properly support the recommendation letter that was submitted on your behalf.
@Holt
I absolutely will do that, thank you very much :)
