As teenagers we tend to succumb to rage and denounce the actions of our parents proclaiming the rules they impose as "totally unfair" because "so and so's parents will let them go so why cant we?" As a means of retaliation, we fervently pledge to ensure the least possible resemblance to them and their cruel actions in the future. We fail to realize however that our family influences everything from our daily flossing habits to our political ideology. The experiences of my mother have served as a compelling force in the profession and lifestyle that I have chosen to pursue. My mother pregnant at sixteen sacrificed her own happiness and remained in a loveless and emotionally draining marriage to ensure that we received the life that she felt we deserved. She eventually ended it realizing that it was more harmful rather than beneficial to us and has struggled to maintain our family. My mother works hard, but a job in the retail service industry hardly suffices to maintain three children. My mother motivated me to do better in life and learn from her mistakes. She taught me to rely on nobody but oneself and possess the determination essential to ones success.

At a young age my mother and her friends would rave about my intrinsic ability and ease to deal with children bombarding me with questions about whether I would pursue a teaching career, but I would simply shrug unsure and not in the stage of my life where I cared to make that type of decision.

However, I did not expected that I would be undertaking the responsibility of helping my mother care for my baby sister who was born three years ago. I felt that this responsibility was not mine to fulfill and disliked it because it impeded my participation in many extracurricular activities that required time outside of school and the simple joy of an outing with friends. However, my baby sister's birth has been not only a blessing but has served to strengthen my conviction that I desire to work with children though not necessarily in their teaching. I discovered that as a pediatrician I could realize my interest in science and working with children. Becoming a pediatrician is hardly an easy career to fulfill, not too long ago my aunt commented, "oh it is so cute that she still wants to be a pediatrician," conveyed with a tone similar to one commenting on someone's desire to be a superhero. Becoming a pediatrician involves many years of school hence it takes stamina and resolve to decide to assume such an arduous career. I have decided upon it in spite of the sacrifice it requires because I refuse to settle for anything other than my dream. My mother was forced to settle. I will not.

A night a couple of weeks ago my mother told me that our house is nearing foreclosure and that we have approximately two months to move out. I asked her "so what are we going to do?" She replied, "I have already given up" with a bitter laugh. I remember standing there staring at my linoleum kitchen floor, the harsh light bearing down on me blinking rapidly, repressing an unfamiliar emotion. Pain that's what I felt. However, this was another type of pain. It was the kind you feel when the person you depend on to have all the answers and who you admire and respect because they have endured so many difficulties has given up. So if you ask me what has shaped my dreams and aspirations then I will tell you that it has been to never again experience that emotion, to never let life's capacity to defeat even the strongest as it has done my mother do so to me. Without the determination that these experiences have instilled in me I would not have the strength or drive to aim high and assume the goal not only become a pediatrician, but independent, strong, and unfaltering of character.
