A Single Moment Can Change Everything
At ten years old I found a passion that would last a lifetime. At the young age of ten, I started volunteering at the HELP Center of Austin, a nonprofit organization known for taking rehabilitating rescue horses and then using them to teach children with disabilities to ride. I loved nothing more than watching a horse come in emaciated, broken the light in their eyes almost completely extinguished and as time goes on they find love, happiness, and health. I would proceed to spend seven years with the organization. By saving a horse, we were able to save a human.
At twelve years old a beautiful thoroughbred mare came in she was an ex-racehorse and later a brood mare and sent to auction when her owners dubbed her no longer useful, her name was Godiva. The organization decided she had too much attitude for lessons and my father adopted her. She became my best friend we were the same age and our personalities meshed perfectly. We grew up and took lessons together bonded and went on adventures.
As a freshman in high school my father went to prison, we couldn't afford our home and moved into the small house on the HELP Center property, they gave us cheap rent in trade for taking care of the horses. My stepsister left to live with her father, and my twin sister got kicked out the house, I was left to live with my stepmother. During this time, I started to spiral out of control. I distanced myself from the human population developed an anxiety disorder and eating disorder and dived into caring for the horses and became very attached to Godiva. She was my solace she didn't tell me I looked sick, didn't remind me that I was only hurting myself, and was always there to help me escape.
January 20, 2010, I lost my best friend. Around six AM I went out to feed horses and she was wheezing, she had had an allergic reaction to her feed. We rushed her to the vet, but by then she had worked so hard trying to breathe that she had torn her diaphragm, there was nothing we could do. I want to study animal sciences in an attempt to save someone else the pain. I never want someone to experience the soul-crushing loss I experienced to hear the doctors telling them what was wrong and being so lost in grief that the words fall to the ground useless and the doctors staring at them with lost eyes because they just don't understand. I want to be able to help both human and animal.
