PROMPT:What are the unique qualities of Northwestern - and of the specific undergraduate school to which you are applying - that make you want to attend the University? In what ways do you hope to take advantage of the qualities you have identified?
Thanks in advance!.
While I dream of contributing to the community in the field of chemistry, I discovered that Weinberg College of Arts and Science provides the excellent programs, distinguished advising systems, and student research that will surely benefit my growth as a young scientist with an open world view. In my junior year, my most challenging class, AP Chemistry, turned into my favorite one despite several sleepless nights of work. As the incomprehensible concepts of acids and bases, precipitations, moles, and electronic configurations emerged, I put forth my best effort to survive the class. After school, I read the textbook, and I tried all the problems from the books. My interest in chemistry grew and my grade exactly reflected my efforts. Lab experiments especially fascinated me, because the conclusions I got usually were commensurate with the concepts from the book. When I decided to study chemistry as my major in college and to research drugs specifically, I found that Northwestern is the perfect place for me to learn both chemistry and its applications for the global wellbeing.
One of the unique qualities of Northwestern is small class experience through Freshman Seminar which will not only improve my interpersonal communication skills but also fulfill my intellectual curiosity by providing a small class in which I can closely interact with the professor. In particular, I am interested in taking "Technology, Medicine, and Health Care" because I have strong interest in the public well being. During Seminar, I will sometimes be overwhelmed at others' inconceivable ideas or at a flaw in my own argument. However, I will take advantage of the Weinberg's academically challenging class, since I believe I can find more innovative ways to utilize chemistry in the real world with the integration skills I pick up in seminars. Plus, I will become more intellectual and tolerable to diverse opinions.
Another distinction that attracts me to Northwestern University is its student supportive environment. While I worry that the transition to college will be overwhelming, as long as there is advice and assistance, I believe I will successfully adjust to the new environment and challenges. Fortunately, Weinberg provides numerous resource centers for counseling and academic support. With such caring advisors, I am confident I can survive my freshman year and plan my college path more easily.
In addition, research opportunities provided by Weinberg College would help solve my curiosity through collaboration with prominent faculty members and peers. As I mentioned earlier, my career goal is to research drugs. Drug research includes not only the development of new drugs but also the evaluation of new treatments for safety and efficacy. The valuable experience as a student research assistant should complement my knowledge from coursework and help me develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
With the combination of my passion for chemistry, the phenomenal curriculum, advising systems and research opportunities at Weinberg, Northwestern can nurture me not only with academic knowledge but also with wider perspectives. I believe Weinberg College's Seminar Programs, excellent location and superb research programs will allow me to apply chemistry to real life and expand my imagination for ways in which chemistry can help humanity.
