What intrigues you? Tell us about one work of art, scientific achievement, piece of literature, method of communication, or place in the world (a film, book, performance, website, event, location, etc.), and explain its significance to you.
A couple years ago, I came across the His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman. The main focus of the book is on parallel universes and their existence. Ever since I read that trilogy, I have been fascinated by the idea of parallel universes existing. When my conductor used the idea of parallel universes in one of his end-of-the-year speeches, he further broadened my interest in them. The idea of parallel universes is that there are multiple universes that lay on top of each other and branch off of one another. If, for example, I heard a strange sound and turned my head to the left to try to see what it was, in another universe, I would have turned my head to the right. This leads to a chain reaction and a never ending sequence of events that forms an infinite number of universes. I was never really able to wrap my head around all of it when I first heard of the idea and still find it absolutely mind boggling to this day. Could it be possible that such a thing exists? Could it be possible that in one universe, I am no longer alive? Could it be possible that in another universe, I am a millionaire? The possibilities are endless. I often find myself daydreaming about this subject which leads to me wondering how different life would be if I had made one decision instead of another. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be lucky and I'll stumble upon a rip in the world that leads to another universe, just like Will from Pullman's epic trilogy.
