Please discuss the following: Tell us something unique about you, why you chose your particular major, and how you expect Duquesne University to help you achieve your academic, personal and professional goals. Please include any examples of your research, shadowing or volunteer experiences.
*** I would like feedback (grammar, re-wording, and whether I do what prompt says or not) Thanks!
I have a set of moral values that I follow all the time. Why? These morals are framed and hung on my wall, all thanks to my wonderful parents. I can speak four languages fluently: English, Urdu, Punjabi, and Arabic. This talent was extremely useful when I volunteered at University of Maryland Medical Center. While volunteering there, I passed by a room where a patient was shouting in Urdu and no one was there with her to help translate what she was saying to the doctor. No other doctor or nurse on the floor could understand what the patient was trying to convey to them. I stopped and peered into the room and asked if I could help. The patient then started to speak to me and was extremely grateful that I came in time to help her. I translated all of her needs to the doctor and was thanked for it. I felt accomplished because this little talent helped someone in need of it. In addition to speaking four languages, I write my own quotes and poems. This type of writing is spiritual and fulfilling and keeps me grounded to my morals.
Duquesne University gives my goals a new meaning, and studying at this university gets me passionate about a great future ahead of me. It is the beginning stage that will lead me toward my goal of becoming a successful pharmacist. There is no other college that will help me pursue my enthusiasm for academics at the same level. The great curriculum will help me attain knowledge about the greater world that we live in. It will also mold me as a human as well as an intellectual scholar. I would like to engage in cutting edge research at this institution, which is highly known for its research successes. This institution has great community interactions which are important to me because community service allows intellectual growth. I am a very active member of my mosque and I would like to go to a school that encourages spiritual growth along with educational advancement. Knowing that I will have a vast knowledge of a multitude of things, I know that I can achieve success later on in my career.
My inspiration for a career in pharmacy came when my grandmother fell down the stairs and fractured her hip and had to be kept in a nursing home. While she was being cared for, I would visit her every day and help her with her medications. I would read the side effects and began researching other alternative drugs for her hip pain. It was then that I became interested in understanding the study of a drug's nature, and its properties. At this time, I realized the importance of medicine and developed an interest in pharmacology.
Pharmacists give patient consultation and develop an important relationship with their patients. I enjoy assisting others because it allows me to give back to the community. Furthermore, my experience at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Crossroads Pharmacy has reaffirmed that my chosen career will reflect my desire to assist others. At the University of Maryland, I was able to assist patients with their medications. In addition to this, I was able to see the effects of anesthesia and other sedative drugs. At the Crossroads Pharmacy, I volunteered to assist the pharmacy technicians with counting the medications and reading and printing the labels for the drugs. Pharmacy school is the perfect opportunity for me to pursue a career that mirrors those values.
Like science and technology, the field of pharmacy is always evolving. There is always so much advancement with medicine and new clinical trials. This will be a career where I can be continually be active in trying to gain information about new drugs and health information. It is important to me that I have a passion for whatever path my life takes. Pharmacy is where my passion lies and will provide my life with meaning and satisfaction.
