*The Global UGRAD Program is for young leaders comitted to serving their home communities. In the space below, please describe why you would be an excellent candidate for the Global UGRAD*
Balancing my studies as a student of communication science with my job as a commis in the catering industry has provided me with some of the most worthwhile lessons on leadership, communication and flexibility. Whether coordinating with colleagues or ensuring client satisfaction during high pressure events, I've developed the skills needed to work collaboratively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds. These experiences have made me equipped as a leader who can lead by example and driven me to have a positive influence on my community.
I also filmed a short film for a class. This was one of the most personally impactful learning experiences of my education. There is something particularly valuable in my learning by leading a peer team having highly dissimilar skills, the ability to navigate disagreement but more importantly, the ability to assemble a team for the solution of a common creative problem. It wasn't always smooth, there were disagreements, and surprising setbacks but those difficulties forced me to mature. By the end of the project, I understood both challenges and joys of teaching, group problem solving, viewing and supporting group aspirations for the future. It validated my due perception of the value that collation and sharing can provide.
For example, the combination of the project at university newsroom lab, as part of the lab scheme, not only provided me practical experiences and knowledge, but also theoretical knowledge. In the process of working with a team of news feature writing members I realised how the capacity of a story to be really uplifting, as well as to feel very relatable, to cut above the noise layer and generate dialogue. When writing a news about social problems in the local community, for example, I found out how to write for the reader by making knowledge transparent, generalizable and effectively usable. Furthermore, this experience also yielded greater competence feeling for timely completion and communicating in order to solve critical problems. Knowing it inspired me to think of how media and narrative arts are still potentially used to move my community and others.
The Global UGRAD Program offers an amazing chance to develop these skills and acquire important cross-cultural learning. Through interactions with peers from rich and varied cultural backgrounds and through engagement in the civic life of my host U.S. community, I hope to continue to strengthen my leadership skills and gain fresh approaches to a positive contribution. I am so excited to go home to share these experiences with my own community, in hopes that I can work towards bringing about inclusion andinspiring others to work together towards the beneļ¬t of all. Goals of my own are to continue developing as a leader and to seek new ways to make a difference for the better. Upon my return, I will undertake the planning of community programs aimed at fostering awareness of other cultures. However, it is my hope that this experience will give me a richer understanding of the subject and a wider view of the subject matter, which will help me become more and more immersed in the matter both personally and by way of others.
