Hello,
I am working on an application essay about my personal characteristics. My idea is to use three objects that represent what i like to do and what that shows about my character. ex: apron - cooking - creativity. I would like some help/suggestions on how to begin.
Maybe it would be a little easier for you if you work backwards. Just a suggestion
Start by deciding which characteristics you want the essay to focus on. Ideally, they will be positive ones that would make you a strong student, and that you haven't already focused on in your other application essays to this university. Then, you need to come up with some sort of personal anecdotes that will allow you to show, rather than tell, the reader that you possess these characteristics.
I like the three objects idea but, unless the three objects in question jump out at you immediately, you may need to work backwards, asking yourself which characteristics you want to demonstrate and then choosing objects accordingly. A more challenging way to do it would be to ask yourself: Which objects do I actually touch/use most often in the course of a day or week?

Ooh. That sounds like fun. Of course, you'd have to exclude things you touch and use regularly because pretty much everyone does -- things like the clothes you wear, for instance. Though, if one had a ring of great significance, or some such, I suppose even that could become useful.
I think thats a great Idea:) its good to use imagery to appeal to the 5 senses through your writing.
Oh wow. These are great suggestions. I will try these suggestions and see which one works out the best for me. Thank you so much for your help. I hope I can get this essay done and post it for review.
I look forward to seeing your draft. Meanwhile, I've been thinking about the objects I touch every day and what they say about me. So far, I've got: (1) bundle of pencils (different colors) rubber-banded together plus old-school composition book (they function as a set); (2) faded dog leash; (3) ??? (can't decide.)
I think you should concentrate on one or two characteristics of yours that you think are most impressive, as this is an application essay.
Computer keyboard and mouse. I imagine they would come up for many of the people posting in these forums.
start off as a story... maybe you will get inspiration?
