Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my essay! I feel that my essay is way too long and just need to cut it down and take out grammatical errors and things that do not show influence. Thanks so much and all feedback is welcome! If you read my essay I will also read yours! :)
Write an essay in which you tell us about someone who has made an impact on your life and explain how and why this person is important to you.
"Make sure you stand when she walks into the room, okay?", Shannon, the office secretary, sternly cautioned me. I nodded my head and made sure the buttons on my light green polo were aligned and that no wrinkles could be seen on any article clothing I was wearing that day. It was my first day of volunteering at Potter's Healthcare Services, although it felt more like a job than a way to be improving my community, but it was a more productive than eating and sleeping my summer away. Sunlight then gradually filled the room as the door and a woman of great stature, confidence, and determination entered the room. She was not only the owner the Potter's Healthcare services, but an empress, spreading her authority and influence on everyone staff member and patient apart of this health company. I stood once she had entered the building, attempted to emulate her stance of confidence, put a smile on my face and said, "Good morning Auntie Kay".
Coming from humble beginnings in Nigeria, my Aunt Kay was not destined for greatness of failure. So Aunt Kay took the clay of her dreams and aspiration and began shaping her future. She had been a registered nurse for about ten years, and was fired from her job at the hospital in which she worked. Instead of finding another hospital to work at, Aunt Kay decided to start her own home health care business, the Potter's Healthcare Services. Her first office was (no pun intended) was her home office! Now the home health business was nothing new to me - it had become a trend in America, especially in the professional life of the Nigerians around me. In no way did I doubt my aunt; I just saw her and her business as another paint stroke on the medical field that would blend in with the rest. Little did I know her mark in the medical field and the home health world would stand out the brightest.
Aunt Kay soon moved out of her home office and into a small strip mall with other up and coming businesses. Then she bought out two offices spaces in the strip because she was expecting and creating expansion. A few months later, new buildings for private businesses had been developed and Aunt Kay moved the biggest office the new plaza had to offer. Not only did the Potter's Healthcare Service business enlarge, but the amount of employees also, more people stayed with the company then left, and from old family friends to strangers who saw a job wanted ad on craigslist, Aunt Kay was available to sell her business and her ideas because they were different. Many home health companies can be described as laid back where one works when he or she feels that it is necessary, however Aunt Kay used her rigor adapted from working at hospitals while institution the philosophy that there is always work to be done. Aunt Kay had also made a strong effort to develop a personal relationship with each staff member, no matter how old or new, by checking up on their personal life and always encouraging her staff to continue their walk with Christ. I had only been volunteering at Potter's Healthcare Services for a few days, and I could see Aunt Kay's positive influence on her staff - while she was improving her business and herself, she was also making sure that they were improving also. I could not wait to see how she would bolster my growth as a person.
One of the most prominent moments of my time as a volunteer at Potter's Healthcare Services was when I went with Aunt Kay to visit a patient. Finally something other than filing and making copies. I traded in my green polo for green and pink nursing scrubs, courtesy of my mother's closet. Before he entered Before we entered the patient's apartment Aunt Kay warned me that the patient, Suzanne, was around seventy years old and was suffering Alzheimer's disease. Suzanne's best friend died about a month before my visit and because of her Alzheimer's, Suzanna would constantly relives the moment in which she informed that her best friend had died, and it would make Suzanne very distraught. When my Aunt Kay and I enter Suzanne's apartment, Suzanne was obvious grieving the loss of her friend, and rather than only doing the necessary vitals and heading back to work, Aunt Kay took the time to improve emotional condition. She wiped away Suzanne's tears and allowed Suzanne to express any feelings or memories she had of her best friend while Aunt Kay calmly convinced her that she would be united with her best friend in heaven and could be happy together. I have always had an interest in the medical world since I was a child, and when discussing with people who have medical professions, they mostly focus all of the different terms one will have to memorize and the different diagnoses that one may see. One rarely hears of the emotional side of the medical careers, and the emotional connection seen on medical shows such as Grey's Anatomy and E.R are too dramatic to have any credibility. So this was my first moment to seeing someone in the medical field heal all aspects of a person- Aunt Kay worked her hardest to improve the emotional, physical and mental state of Suzanne. She was able to restore happiness to Suzanne's life, and though it may have been temporary, Suzanne day was improve and only just by knowing her vitals were in good condition. The acts of Aunt Kay became a factor that encouraged me to further purse a career in the medical field. I want to be a ray of sunlight in people's lives parallel to how Aunt Kay was to Suzanne. If making the physical pain someone is experiencing disappear, then I shall do just that. If they also need emotional therapy and to recognize that someone is there for them, I will also be there to help. Aunt Kay showed me how to provide services to people's lives and attempt my hardest to be well rounded in each one. She showed me not to put myself above my future patients because I may have a higher education, but become a waiter for my patients and anything they desire, tangible or intangible; I should provide and give the patients the best quality each time, ensuring that they will want to return. And do not give them something if it is illegal, of course.
There was no doubt that my Aunt Kay had reached success in her business. So what did she do with her success? She shared it. It was simple things from buying the office staff lunch on Friday to creating an award for each person who worked for the Potter's Healthcare Services and handing out plaques during the annual company picnics. My Aunt Kay would also take me and other staff members to drop off school supplies at a local are battered women's shelter, hoping to improve our perspective on our current condition and our families. It was always about the giving for Aunt Kay for she did not create the company on her own, so others should be able to reap the benefits of the seeds sown. She encouraged me to choose to give over choosing to take, because the benefits were more rewarding.
When looking back at my volunteer experience and the work Aunt Kay had done, I realized that my aunt never settled. Though she was happy during the beginning about creating a business that was able to survive, she continued to dream big. She always saw room for improvement and would try her hardest to make more space for it to fit. As I have gotten older, I have heard a lot of information about the professional world from adults in my life. However, Aunt Kay should me the full circle- every emotion, task, fiscal things, types of workers, etc. She did not do it to scare me, however to make sure I knew the reality of the field I was getting into. Aunt Kay also displayed to me that I would only be able to make others happy if I myself was happy with what I was doing. I have the upmost respect for my Aunt Kay and hope to emulate her work method of working for the improvement of herself and others, and to always have such a giving spirit.
