Why do you want to attend NYU-Poly?

In the past two years I have begun my study of engineering. As I learn how the knowledge I have acquired is put to the task of solving real-life problems, I have found that engineering is both interesting and very useful. I am eager to find more practical applications for my growing knowledge of math and science. The opportunity to earn a minor in music from NYU is another goal of mine. I am sure that the resources of the school and the surrounding city will aid me greatly in my undertakings at NYU-Poly.

Tell us why you selected your major or your area of interest.

Having completed two years of engineering school, I have had the opportunity to take my choice of engineering electives. The most appealing of these was entitled Introduction to Electrical Circuits. I have found building circuits in lab to be very intriguing and also quite convenient. The fact that circuit theory can be tested in such a readily available and hands-on manner is one of the reasons that I have chosen the electrical and computer engineering major. I am applying to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department with the intent of acquiring a co-op or internship and finishing my degree in high academic standing.

Before I critique your prompt I would like to point out that the question must be answered in 50 CHARACTERS or less not 500 WORDS or less. You have 209 words but you have 1208 characters. You might want to cut a lot of this out first.

I think you need to pay attention to this point. Also, I think you need to make use of every word you say there. Skim what you say to the most, if not only, important points. For example;

In the past two years I have begun my study of engineering.

This can be taken off as they already know you are with an engineering background because that information is available in other sections of your application. Focus more on the features that express why you want to study in NYU and why it comes on top of your preferred colleges.

Why is engineering interesting to you? Why is it useful?
I think you should dig a little deeper. You are applying to NYU Poly for engineering already, so they can assume you are interested in it. Why a minor in music?

From what I've read here and there it seems that colleges always want to know "why" so maybe if you ask yourself "why" on everything it will help.

Why do you want to attend NYU-Poly?

Working alongside engineering and science students from such a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds is a rewarding experience by itself. The opportunity to take part in technological advances by combining the health sciences, urban planning and engineering cannot be forgone. Earning a degree in music is another goal of mine, as I have been studying classical piano since I was five years old. I can achieve this by cross-registering at NYU.

Tell us why you selected your major or your area of interest.

The most appealing engineering elective I have taken thus far was entitled Introduction to Electrical Circuits. The neat, hands-on lab allowed us to readily experiment with electricity and discover basic properties of various circuit elements and their configurations. The involvement of Poly's ECE Department in its pursuit of global, distinct, multi-disciplinary initiatives such as Bioengineering (specifically biomedical image processing) and ICT is also very exciting going forward.

How are you a 'PolyThinker'?

As a PolyThinker, I am eager to create more practical applications for my growing knowledge of engineering. Earning an associate's degree at the age of sixteen is an achievement that displays my ability to challenge myself as well as the standards of the system I am a part of. I feel this clearly illuminates deficiencies in the existing approach to education.

Here is how they define PolyThinker:

PolyThinking Defined

- Noun
1. an innate capacity of analysis or problem-solving characterized by a healthy suspicion of obvious or widely-held conclusions
2. an act of thinking in parallel that optimizes how the brain processes information

- Verb
1. to conceive of technological, scientific, mathematic, visual, and management approaches that illuminate deficiencies in existing approaches
2. to make micro or macro advances in a field of study that have ripple effects in multiple fields
