My name is XX, and I am writing this letter to express my interest in applying to your institution's Earth Science program.
Living in the suburbs of Jakarta, I witnessed firsthand the enormous damage floods can leave behind. Having to see my friends and neighbours struggle to keep their home and belongings intact after floods raised my desire to find a solution regarding this matter. Jakarta has a history of annual floods happening in rainy seasons, often caused by poor waste management. Trash is irresponsibly disposed to open water bodies, clogging water flow during rainfall, resulting in flooding of certain areas. The urgency for better waste management sparked my desire to someday find better systems to manage trash in Jakarta.
This desire began to resurface during a volunteer expedition to a remote island in Maluku. While I was mainly assigned to overlook educational activities for local students, and assisting a library refurbishing activity, my most significant takeaway was an environmental one. I participated in a village cleaning act, which led me to discover the island's struggles with open water pollution, similar to Jakarta. This discovery made me realize that waste management is not just a local nuisance, but a bigger threat to Indonesia's ecosystems. From here, I began to develop an interest in the interconnected aspects of the Earth, in hope that I can find a solution to the recurring pattern of environmental issues in Indonesia.
This newfound interest also pushed me to thrive academically. For my annual semester project, I created a story book to introduce younger audiences to the biomes in Earth's Afrotropical realm, and expand my global perspective on biodiversity. The project resulted in satisfactory results for my grade, and was presented during a monthly school promotion. Additionally, I began to delve deeper into environmental health by conducting an experiment on the safety and cleanliness of a local river. The experiment is planned to be compiled in a report as a base for further proposals regarding local water protection.
The X university caught my attention due to its integrated focus on natural science and geography in the Earth Science program. I am particularly interested in the hydrology and physical geography lessons which resonate deeply with Jakarta's water pollution and sinking landscape. Studying in Hungary, a nation committed to meet the European Union's high environmental standard, offers a unique advantage for me. Hungary's success in developing clean energy use and its plans for future waste management regulations solidify my interest in studying there. I'm excited to learn from your institution's reputable programs, and observe Hungary's development in environmental protection.
I intend to use my time in Hungary to strengthen Indonesia and Hungary's bilateral relations, by sharing my culture's perspective while learning from Hungary's innovations. I'm prepared to face challenges in adapting to a new language and culture, by researching Hungarian customs and learning basic language skills before departing. This effort will hopefully help me navigate my new life and create valuable connections with local communities in the future.
Upon graduating, I plan to return to Indonesia to propose new waste management schemes that's suitable for our diverse geographical landscapes.
