"What about engineering? It's pragmatic and ..."
"No. I want to study Environmental Science." I said calmly, disturbing my mum's speech about all those good majors.
As a child, I was always the type of "good student". But inside, I always confuse about my direction. Since elementary school, I have been bouncing between all kinds of new interests: martial art, basketball, programming, ballet, piano and painting. I was never afraid to try new things, but hesitated to say no. Just like Steve Jobs said, "Focus means saying no." I finally figured out that I want to focus on Environmental Science and in the future, work in the industry that served for environmental protection: an environmental lawyer, an environmental scientist or a social worker in global environmental organization.
A few months ago, I got on a flight and travelled thirteen hours from China to US with the mind to start my dream in UCSD. After first few months of study and exploring more information about my major, I was again in the dilemma of saying no: Environmental System program provided here is not exactly what I wanted to pursue. The program expects students to study the whole Earth System from Earth Science track and focuses mainly on Marine Science and Earth Science for upper-division study. Since my interests in environmental science focus more on ongoing environmental issues and the social impact on environmental problems, I hope to pursue a program with stronger link between science and real-world problems and with humanity and social aspects of environmentalism.
College of Holy Cross comes up naturally as my choice. Environmental Studies program here provides a wide range of courses that fit my interest and off-campus opportunities to study in other colleges, go abroad and take an internship. Besides, small class education and friendly school environment in Holy Cross also have great appeal to me. By attending Holy Cross, I believe I will be able to set up a solid academic foundation for future challenge, gain experience of working in non-profit agencies, and get closer to my goal.
According to my transcript, I have done well in UCSD and I am convinced that I will be able to meet the academic challenges in Holy Cross.
