No one likes getting lost, especially myself. The clutch of fear on my body and the panic thoughts that run through my head make getting lost one of the worst experiences I have ever experienced. However, when I am lost in a speckled scene of bars and measures I don't mind being lost at all. Johnny Carson once said, "In Hollywood if you don't have a shrink, people think you're crazy." Well I might not live in Hollywood but I do have a shrink, multiple shrinks actually, and they go by the names of Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and Elgar.
I've always been raised in a musical environment, although neither of my parents had learned how to play classical instruments I can't remember a day in the car when my Mom wouldn't be blasting Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata or Bizet's Carmen Suite. I grew up loving any and all classical music (except Handel, absolutely hate his stuff). Our family has a busy schedule what with music lessons, orchestra rehearsals, and sports practices every week, my life can feel a little hectic after awhile. I figured out after a an hour of just watching orchestras play different variations of the Romeo and Juliet Suite that classical music was my therapy. For anywhere from two to thirteen minutes I could be transported to a completely different time period, relax and temporarily escape reality.
With new music genres like dubstep and K-Pop entering the music industry, even more of my friends barely recognize the name Bach. Although I do like my fair share of hip hop and alternative rock, I can never say no to listening to the Cinderella Suite if it comes on my classical Pandora station. I could never turn my back on the therapeutic melodies of The Flight of the Valkyries and Danse Bacchanale.
