What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way? (roughly 250 words)
I just want to make sure I link William Bouguereau to myself well, have an interesting story, and my grammar and English is perfect. Critique as much as you like.
Near the end of his life, William Bouguereau, a realistic French painter, chose to invite families to his home. Within his life Bouguereau had accomplished countless feats but came to the realization that both his life and career were coming to an end. Sticking to the traditional Academic style, his paintings had a certain trademark which he grew tired of and came to the conclusion that he would not bow out, without one last show. William Bouguereau's guests had become the new subject of his last works of art, carefully observing them socialize while he painted their interaction with one another. These revolutionary portraits helped form a new era of art; realism. His last works of art moved me because art no longer had to be merely a posing figure or a scenic image, art had become chillingly real. Through the hands of William Bouguereau, we can see how he viewed his guests, as the fly on the wall. He drew inspiration from life and created art that has touched me like no other. In my life, family gatherings have become a time of sadness because of the lack of a united family. Similar to Bouguereau, I take note of the daily interactions between (what I consider to be) normal families, in hopes to create an image of the family, which I long to have again.
