The graph shows the proportion of the urbanites in 4 selected Asian countries between 1970 and 2020, with the forecast for next decades (2030 to 2040). Generally, there has been a rising trend in the rate of city-dwellers in these countries. In addition, Malaysia and Indonesia have witnessed significant growth over the entire period.
To begin with the data of Indonesia and Malaysia, starting at quite low at only 14%, the rate of the Indonesian population in cities rose sharply to 22% in 1990. At the same time, a 15% increase was recorded in that of Malaysia, from 30% to 45%. In the next 30 years, the figures surged by approximately 30% to 52% for the former and 75% for the latter. They will have reached 60% and 80% by the year 2040.
Moving onto Thailand and Philippines, initially 32% of Filipinos lived in urban settings, which was the highest figure at that time and grew slightly before climbing to 48% in 1990. Similarly, there was a growth of 10% in the percentage of Thai population, from 19% to 29%. After 3 decades, while the rate of the Philippines witnessed a gradual fall, followed by a marginal rise to 40% in 2020, that of Thailand remained unchanged before going up slightly to 30%. In the future years 2030 and 2040, their figures are expected to experience a steady rise to 50% and a sharp increase of 15% in order.
