Physical Education should remain in school
What do you think of when you hear the term "school"? Do you think of learning new things, because I know I do. It's very important kids learn new things everyday, whether that be book work or even physical education. Physical education is an important subject in school that teaches lifelong skills.
Physical education has been a big role in schools for over centuries. Physical education was first brought to schools in Cincinnati, Ohio starting in 1855. physical education was first brought to the U.S. to get students trained and physically ready for battle in the civil war. When the Civil War ended, they thought it was effective, and they kept Physical education (P.E,) implemented in schools. California was the first state to pass a law that required physical activity twice a day in public schools. Throughout the years, physical education has remained in schools and has taught many different sports. In today's day, physical education has even combined some science and has taught human anatomy. Physical education has played a part in U.S. history and should remain in the school system.
Many people believe physical education should be eliminated in schools. There is a view that physical education is a costly expense. One of the beliefs is that schools should spend funds on fundamental courses. Schools require a lot of funding expenses, and individuals believe any funds that are available should be spent on academic funds, as physical education or any physical activity is not a standardized course. "Daily P.E. for both sexes became common by the middle of the 20th century, but the bipartisan push to raise academic achievement allowed school districts to reduce or eliminate gym classes, and save money by hiring fewer P.E. teachers." Along with funds being an issue, P.E. Some believe it can be a distraction in the middle of a school day. Physical education can be hard to settle down from and having to return to a classroom setting. Lastly, people do believe physical education can be traumatizing to children who are not as active or athletic. There are some physical games or sports that can eliminate a student. They believe being eliminated can cause the children to become discouraged rather than to be motivated on the next event. The pressure of achieving an athletic goal can have an everlasting effect on children who are not as capable of doing the activity. If children are discouraged at a young age, they believe the child will not use the skills as an adult. It is common to believe physical education should be eliminated in schools as it is a costly extra expense, is very distracting and hard for teachers to settle down in their classrooms, and it is traumatizing for the future years.
Now that we have covered all the negative aspects of physical education we can educate on a brighter reason of physical education. Physical education is a perfect example of how children can help their mental health as they can use physical activity. Practicing physical activity reduces stress by imitating stress. Physical activity uses "the flight or fight mode" which makes the body work together to handle stress. Not only does physical activity help reduce stress it also is proven to make children and adults happier overall. Physical activity releases a hormone called endorphins. Endorphins are called the "feel good" hormone, it naturally reduces pain,
helps your mood and allows people to sleep better. Physical education can also increase children's grades in school. Based off the video "Why is physical education a student's most important subject?" We learned that a study was done to show that children who did moderate physical activity actually increased their grades. The study was to see if a group of nine-year olds who walked before school work did better. The study proved to increase their grades by 11-22%. The study showed that increased blood flow can help children concentrate and study better in school. Physical education is an important subject in school because it utilizes physical activity which can improve children's mental health.
Physical education is a very educational course in school that also helps overall health. Physical education teaches the importance of your body and how to keep your body healthy. Over the years children's obesity has skyrocketed due to inactivity, poor nutrition, and food control. "Since the 1980's children obesity has doubled." Not only is obesity a scary factor within itself, but it can also lead to diabetes. Physical education class is not only about physical activities, it also teaches about nutrition. Physical activity takes more than just running. You need to learn how to maintain your body, and feed it the correct things in order to keep it moving correctly. Physical education teaches children the importance of what to eat to reduce the obesity statistic. Physical education teaches the importance of cardiovascular health. One of the main aspects of P.E. is to teach how the cardiovascular system works, and how to practice improving your cardiac muscle. "The earlier children engage in heart-healthy activities like biking, the better their chances of avoiding these diseases as they grow into adulthood." Physical education teaches children how to improve their health even as adults. Physical education teaches how to workout correctly to prevent future injuries. Physical education specifically teaches how to use proper form when exercising or working out. It helps prevent injuries that could possibly haunt children when they actually want to perform in a sport. Physical education is a great class as it teaches how to keep your body healthy while making performances.
As a final point, physical education also improves social skills that can help them later on in life. Physical education teaches children how to problem solve and work together. When you are in P.E. you learn how to communicate, and how to work together as a team. When a team is playing basketball, or baseball you cannot run the court or field by yourself, therefore children must learn how to work together as a team to win the game. Physical education also teaches leadership skills. When people are learning how to be a leader, they must make decisions themselves. "Physical education often presents numerous situations that require children to make quick decisions and solve problems. These experiences help children develop critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to become successful leaders." Physical education also helps children handle their emotions. Children must learn how to interpret a loss. In P.E. you cannot win every game or race, therefore it teaches how to control emotions or show support even if you are not the winner. Physical education can teach children how to be socially involved with other children which could also create lifelong friendships.
As we've talked earlier in the essay about how physical education can be challenging to keep in school, there are some solutions that can help keep the course in all schools. Tax credits are always an option to help keep physical education funded. "A credit is allowed against the taxes imposed by the state for the amount of any fees paid or cash contributions made by a taxpayer pursuant." The extra funds can be used for physical education purposes. Another funding mechanism is by hosting fundraisers with the booster clubs or PTA (parent teacher association). They can sell concessions, or sell school attire to support their schools needs. Limiting funding is not a reasonable excuse to remove physical education in schools when there are options or work arounds to help keep the educational course.
Physical education should remain in public schools, as it is a very educational course that can teach lifelong skills. Physical education keeps the brain and body moving which can help children concentrate as it keeps the blood flow moving. Physical education has been around for so many years, so why would it be eliminated now? Physical education is an important fundamental course that should be kept in schools.
