To read or not to read?
Everybody has something they like to do - playing sports, hanging out with friends, eating ice cream - and for me, it is reading. Reading helps me use my time to learn English more effectively, increase my knowledge, and it also helps me become a caring person.
I began reading at age 7 in first grade, while I was learning how to write. I focused on writing more than reading. In middle school, I was required to read textbooks for classes; in addition, I rented comic books to read for pleasure. I enjoyed reading, but not as much as playing in the playground. In high school, I started to read less because I didn't know enough English. Until my junior year, my teacher gave us a reading day each month; I had no choice but to read. At first, all I wanted was to fill out my reading logs. Then I found out I read more often for myself. I began to read stories, fairy tales, short novels, and books with hundreds of pages. I often ran across unfamiliar words while reading; I also learned English. As a result, I found that reading is more fun that I seemed, and because it was entertaining, it helped me learn English faster.
Now that I am in college, I have to read daily. Sometimes readings are assigning by professors; sometimes I am willing to read for pleasure. I learn new things every time I read. For example, I like to find out more about why we don't remember what our dreams. According to the psychology textbook, if we wake up during our dream, we will remember it; otherwise, we will not. Weeks later, I realized what I read was true; I woke up during my nightmare, and the next morning, I remembered what it was. It was unbelievable. In math, when I was clueless about how to do any problems, I read the book examples. Step by step, I understood clearly how to solve them without the help of my professor. Reading is a powerful way to gain new knowledge.
I like reading romantic novels. Recently, I watched the Twilight movie and started to read the book. It was an amazing book. I think reading love stories or novels is similar to listening to someone's story. When I read, I discover different life styles and how people see things differently. In All American Girls by Meg Cabot, the main character named Samantha is a sophomore in high school; she is living in Washington D.C. In the novel, her life changes when she saved the President and become a hero. By reading novels, I see how the characters act and think - just like reading a person's mind like Edward in the movie Twilight .I feel that I can understand my friends better after reading many novels and articles online. I am sympathetic for their situation and if they make mistakes, I can forgive them easily. Most of my friends said they are thankful to have a friend that can understand them so well; more often, they asked me how I know them so well. I reply to them that I love them, and I read a lot.
Looking back those years, I see myself grow in many ways. I am happy that I choose to read, and it had benefited me in many ways. Reading helps me learn English faster, increasing my understanding about things and my friends.
