Popular events like the football World Cup and other international sporting occasions are essential in easing international tensions and releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Even to a quite limited degree, I still cannot say I would like to agree with the argument: admittedly, international sports may help to let off people's patriotic enthusiasms, no one could make sure them safe; more important, as for international intensions, comparing with other factors resulting in such conflicts, it seems rather extremely hard for sports events to relieve them.
Sometimes, international sports events may build up or even strengthen a friendly relationship between a country and another. However, it is not always a truth. Under certain circumstances, higher patriotic emotions of fans from a country will provoke the others' anger. It is a common sense that history of football tells us that this game has been associated with violence since its very beginnings in 13 century England. That's why the phenomenon of Football Hooligans is so ordinary throughout the world. During the period of season of European Football Champion, a piece of news about that someone was hurt or killed because of football violence would not become an attracting news. Obviously, we cannot expect the international sporting occasions help some crazy fans send out their fever in a safe way.
There are uncountable complicated elements conducing to international contradictions, so it will be a dream to lay the hope of peace in sports events. Berlin Olympic of 1936 didn't prevent the
outbreak of World War II, the games was reduced to be Hitler's tool to cover up his aggressive ambition. On the one hand, if there's no any problem between two countries, the sports events may work as a friendship bridge; on the other hand, if the situation is on the contrary, any kind of sports campaign will not work.
In a word, we must give the popular events a proper role in the international relationship. We should think about their value adding to the peace but we shouldn't consider them as an effective solution to international tensions.
