M.Sc. in Finance and Actuarial Science application

I am writing to express my interest to apply for the M.Sc. in Finance and Actuarial Science at the TUM for the summer semester 2019/20. I honestly believe that my professional and educational background in finance and willingness to learn more in this field makes me an ideal candidate for this program.

I have completed my bachelor's degree in Business Administration from East West University with a CGPA 3.03 out of 4.00. I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to many interesting and challenging fields in economics, management, finance, business though ultimately i choose to do major in finance. During the period of my undergraduate studies, I was really interested with different theories of finance and economics which has helped me to crunch numbers and analyzing numerous scenarios based on those theories. Through case studies and lectures, I broadened my understanding of finance principles while learning about micro and macroeconomics and its relation to run a firms economy. This was particularly fascinating at the time because at one hand the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 was wrecking havoc on economies and businesses around the world on the other hand our domestic stock exchange and share market was shattered by unregulated activities by scammers during 2009.

Apart from my academic background, I was greatly involved in many extra-curricular activities. During my studentship, I was a member of East West University Debating Club. I won several national debate competitions for East West University and part of the organizing committee of EWU Debate Spree-2011 & 2012. I have also volunteered for other clubs and national events.

Currently I am working as an associate manager in one of the leading local banks of the country with prior experience in a globally renowned manufacturing company and a telecommunication company. Working in a top bank of Bangladesh has given me plenty of opportunities to work with various financial instruments and risk management tools besides broadening my knowledge in global trade, financial markets, economics and financial analysis through various in-house and external training. Due to my nature of work, I also have had the chance to be a part of an IT transformation team which worked on the project of "Corporate Customer Documentation Digitization- E.Doc V.02" and "Environmental & Social Credit Risk Assessment Tools- ESCRT". These two projects primarily focused on to enable relationship managers and risk managers to reduce operational risk of corporate client documentation process and risk assessment of clients in a digital platform respectively. This job was rewarding and immensely instructive, and it has solidified my resolve to devote my future career to the field of finance.

In the quest of choosing a subject, I have chosen to pursue master's studies in Germany because it is home to many of the leading financial professionals and institutions in the world. Specifically, the resources and expertise available in your university will provide me with an incredible learning experience. Technische Universität München (TUM) is one of the best universities in Germany and one of the top ranked universities in the world. I believe that being able to study in the Masters of Science in Finance and Actuarial Science program of this prestigious institution could well and truly make a difference in my life, as well as push me towards my goal of returning back to my country and work for an international consultancy firm as a financial researcher. Equipped with the technical expertise and professional skills learned in your university, I hope to help institutions use their resources to the greatest advantage.

I am confident that I will be able to meet the high standards set by your university and will be able to contribute to the program.

I believe that paragraphs 4 and 5 have the most required information for a letter of motivation. However, both paragraphs need to be further developed in terms of motivation and goals to help it become a more solid representation of your motivations for studies in Germany, specifically at this university.

In paragraph 4, you do a good job of explaining your current job, work duties and responsibilities, and how it has motivated you to pursue advanced studies. You should continue the discussion to add a reference to a clear career path that completing advanced studies will help set you on. The motivation is somewhat implied in the paragraph. You need to spell it out based on your work experience. What skills do you lack, why are you motivated to become a better worker in this field, and what you hope to gain career-wise upon completing the course.

For paragraph 5, you should be specific about the course in relation to the university. The two discussions will go in the same paragraph and hopefully, represent your professional motivation on an academic basis. That means the academic motivation should be based on:

Professional shortcomings + university course offerings = professional motivation addressed

Using only those 2 paragraphs, completely developed, should help you better discuss your motivations without going into details that are better used in the statement of purpose.
