Personal Statement - GLOCAL Program

Track D: Glasgow-Barcelona-Kyoto (Industrial Dynamics and Sustainability)

2020 proved to be the year of drastic change for people all over the world. COVID-19 pandemic forced everyone throughout the world to work remotely and not interact in person. This was one the focal point in alteration of the idea that professional and academic fields require in person attendance and made the idea of global connection through technology more evident.

For my first ever full-time job, I worked as an Associate- Client Relations with an agency based in New York while I was in Lahore, Pakistan. Although the nature of work was relative different than social sciences and more based on real life data, the concept that stuck with me was the idea of Globalisation, how a company operating in the United States was able to successfully operate and employee people from different regions and time zone and make it work perfectly. However, the comparative analysis of rural and developed cities in the third world country like Pakistan makes it clear that globalisation and development are interconnected and directly related socio-economic background of a place.

Therefore, my main motivation to study this program at Glasgow is to understand that how comparative capitalism in the large metropolitans has impacted the growth and economic development of rural areas. Moreover, I hope to learn ways and methods to reduce the gap between developed and underdeveloped regions in a country like Pakistan where the difference between the economic status of rural setting and a city is extremely huge while more than 60% of the population of the country resides in the rural areas. Moreover, I want to understand the dynamics of globalisation and its impact on Pakistan's economic development as most of the graduates from the country are being employed by the foreign companies leaving the talent pool relatively narrow.

Coming from a third world country in South Asia, I have experienced political unrest and economic distress with strong impact on my personal life. Even during these circumstances one of the most unexpected things I did in my life was picking up political science as a major during undergraduate studies. Nonetheless, this decision helped me unlock the kind of potential I never knew existed in me and made me realise that I had a strong passion for understanding and exploring the socio-economic factors of development.

My major helped me realise the link between political situation in a country and its socioeconomic development through various courses, projects and research works. For my senior year project, I did a regression analysis of impact of inadequate infrastructure on spread of pandemics. The project mainly focused on the water and sanitation infrastructure in Pakistan and its direct correlation with the spread of COVID-19 spread in the country. The project highlighted differences between a rural area and a city like Lahore, Pakistan was so immense that it facilitated the spread of several diseases and was not limited to the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, for me the biggest motivation to study global health is to reduce this gap between the different socioeconomic areas of the country.

2022 and 2021 has been the year of downfall of businesses in Pakistan some of the examples of such businesses are Airlift or SWVL. Even though I had studied the ecopolitical condition of the country and had developed multiple analytical reports for the local business during my undergrad, this situation was a complete surprise for me. Hence, at university of Barcelona, I hope to study the dynamics of family businesses and start-ups and later on apply these ideas in the Pakistani economy where many start-ups have failed miserably due to inadequate financial resources and poor management. Through the study of companies in emerging sector and entrepreneurial dynamics I will be able to understand the techniques used in create successful enterprises and generate different mechanisms of innovation.

During my current and second job at Total Energies, I worked with internal talent in boosting the employee performance. My main responsibility was to use the employee data and internal communication to reduce the gap between the employee performance and company's expectation. However, I was lucky enough to work as a consultant within the company and provide consultation on internal movement, career development and training programs provided by the company. I feel my experience with the career consultation and trainings has equipped me to study the

While collaborating with the internal talent and coordinating their needs to external trainers and vendors for in house training program I was able to learn the industry dynamics at the level of every department. As retail and consumer sales is the biggest collaborator in the company's functioning, I was able to learn from the employees' experience about the changing dynamics in the oil marketing companies working in Pakistan. This made me extremely curious about the economic and social models of the companies working within the same domain, therefore, I studied their technical and economic model through their on-field sale techniques and put together a training calendar for my company's employees to make up for any domains we were lacking in. However, all of the research and findings during my job have been through secondary research as I was not able to gather the data through an in-field myself therefore, I want to use my experience at total and my field trips in university as a base to carry out the field study in Kyoto to develop a deep understanding of the economic and management models of the companies working Japan and use this skill in my professional experience later on.

Throughout my academic and professional career, I was either working with data or secondary research therefore, which equipped me to carry out extensive research and field studies on my own. My main motivation to study the GLOCAL program is be to be able to develop a thorough study of link between the lack of symmetrical socio-economic technological development in a country and the failure of start-ups or emerging companies. After completing my GLOCAL masters program I am determined to use my study and findings with centres of economic research or think tanks in my country to develop a system that will help the new entrepreneurs to evaluate their company's model before launching it into the market. Moreover, the platform will help the young entrepreneurs to understand the dynamics of their field, the best area of their operations and cross-examination of their proposal with the professionals who have been in the industry for a long time.

The reasons you have chosen to study in specific countries should also indicate the university choices and how you came to opt for these learning institutions. By further expanding on this aspect, maybe you will find commonalities between the countries and schools that would help you to create a solid study path. Right now, the study paths depicted work individually. It is missing a collective learning reference in relation to a future related career path. The learning path you have chose should be summed up into one purpose towards the end of the discussion.

You have done well in choosing the individual aspects for discussion. Even your undergraduate presentation proved to be relevant to your qualifications. At this point you should focus on ensuring a collective purpose for the combined studies. How would a uniquely educated person such as yourself, under this program, change the way Pakistan does international business? What difficulties would you have to overcome to achieve this idea using your training?
