Undergraduate / Math and Foreign Language - Common App/Subjects I have excelled [NEW]

My strong ambition and well committed teachers that I currently envy in my life are the factors that attribute to my success.

In middle school, My math teacher and tutor, Mrs.Wallace, would encourage me by giving me as many math problems she believe that I was capable of doing. She gave a lot of work, but with that work came a reward if you got the problems correct. I remember competing in the school district Math-a-thon for the first time and receiving a medal for solving the most math questions. Our school didn't win the Math-a-thon, but I felt accomplished because it was a total rush to solve problems at a quick pace. Mrs. Wallace encouragement with the math lessons sure did arouse my interest in Mathematics. I became very competitive in class, I always challenged my fellow classmates to see who can solve the problem fast and correct. I was always the victor in those challenges, after challenging my friends I would ask for problems to go home and practice more equations. I felt accomplished whenever I solved a problem that my teachers would miscalculate the equation, I began to feel as if I started to surpass her. When I became a little more mature I began to realize that math is used in everyday life. When I joined the mini chess club, it became simple to understand because I was calculating how many spaces it would take to get to the King.

When I got settled into high school, I kept the spirit that I had in middle school up to my junior year. That's the year I met my Algebra teacher, Dr. Frost. She was the most intelligent math teacher I have ever come across. She shared her passion of math to all of her students. Dr. Frost taught Different from the teachers I previously had she had a certain way to show how she wants the problem to be done and right. She always showed Hip-Hop Math videos from the latest songs to encourage the students interest in Order of Operations, Pythagorean Theorem, and Slope Intercept. Whenever we had a test and my grade was a B, she would encourage me to improve by writing on my paper "you can do better". She changed my whole perspective of math, I use to just do it because I was taught how, but now I do it because it's a profound curriculum. At the end of my Junior Year, Dr. Frost recommended me as a recipient for the Ohio State & Honda Partnership Math Medal Award. The award was for students who excel in math with a G.P.A of 3.0 or higher and want to major in Engineering. I was accepted for that award in the beginning of my senior year. With Dr. Frost I learned pre-calculus and calculus problems and aced them with good grades.

In Addition to math, foreign language (Spanish) was another subject that I have excelled in. When I was a freshman, I knew nothing about another language. At the time, Learning a second language was scary and exciting because I was new to the "learning a different culture" concept. Just like math, I began to enjoy spanish; this was due to the fact that my teacher, Mrs. Carranza, taught her culture from her heart. The thing that separated her from the other teachers was her expression of teaching. Besides just taking notes and watching videos she took learning to a whole different universe. Mrs. Carranza would let us role play, make spanish music, and gave out class projects to do. Some of the projects were on Spanish countries. One of my favorite countries is Mexico because they celebrate "Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)". Day of the Dead is a day of celebration where you remember and prepare special foods in honor for the deceased. I enjoy this day because Mrs. Carranza let us bring in certain foods and sit in silent for the people who have passed on in that year. This celebration allowed us to show respect to other countries and also appreciate the Spanish culture more often. As Went through Spanish II and III during sophomore year i passed with flying colors.

Til this day, I still speak Spanish and I enjoy Math even more. Both subjects have become very special to me. I still go back to my teachers when they want me to explain what they are going to teach to the incoming students that they receive.

Undergraduate / SCIENCE & LANGUAGE ARTS; Subjects in which you have had difficulty [2]

This is the prompt that i am doing: Discuss the subjects in which you have had difficulty. What factors do you believe contributed to your difficulties? How have you dealt with them so they will not cause problems for you again? In what areas have you experienced the greatest improvement? What problem areas remain?

Having the lack of knowledge of two subjects has damage my mindset in the learning environment. I feel as if an object is being hidden from me and no one is helping me find it. Growing up, I always had difficulties learning science and language arts. The problem was that I had teachers who could care less about me passing or failing. Many of my elementary teachers just gave out work sheets and expected them to be done at the end of the class. I did all the work, but I did not have a stable understanding of what should have been be taught. All the other students understood clearly, but I was still cloudy in certain sections. I tried studying at home but that just made learning the subjects more confusing. At school, Majority of my educators expected me to already know what it is they are teaching. What they did not expect was that I did not comprehend what was being explained. Whenever I asked questions, they seemed to give me a funny look as if to say, "you should already know the answer". They never gave a reply back and that discouraged me from asking anymore questions from them.

Scholarship / I am open-minded/ Difficulty in Art & Science - GATS Scholarship [6]

I consider myself to be an open-minded person; therefore, I believe it is alright for all humans beings to be accustomed to a small deficiency. There is always a lesson to be learnt from that weakness we all possess. The subjects that I have difficulty in are art and science. Many kids grow up and know what areas they are destined to succeed or have problems in. As much as I admire art and science, I knew at a young age that I would have difficulties with these subjects. I could not draw line art or remember the elements on the periodic table as well as my classmates did. I thought it was challenging. However, I joined the math and science club to engage my enthusiasm, but after a while I became dissatisfied. I had no interest in science because I could not learn the concept. I tried studying at home, but that made learning the subject more troublesome. I genuinely would love to find out how the big bang really started and why everything has to go through evolution but art has grasp my attention at the moment. In school, I took an art class and later on joined the art club. I learnt how to draw continuous line art and abstract art. Eventually I advanced to doing ceramic and clay figurines in art class. Honestly, I still struggle with drawing whats on my mind before actually making my creation. When I need help deciding what to make, I ask my teacher for help instantly, for example, making a life size picture of Lil' Wayne into a doll size clay masterpiece. I believe with more effort, I will be able to learn from my difficulties in art. Overall, I feel that my art skills are better than it was before. My teacher, Mr.Ward, compliments me for the effort I show each time I begin a drawing.

Scholarship / Too many females; COMMON APP/Situation that I was unfairly treated [2]

Prompt: Essay 3
Briefly describe a situation in which you felt that you or others were treated unfairly or were not given an opportunity you felt you deserved. Why do you think this happened? How did you respond? Did the situation improve as a result of your response?

the prompt is written in a narrative

"I'm very sorry Ms. Burney, but your daughter will not be admitted into our AMA program this year." said the administrator of Thurgood Marshall High School. "Why is my daughter being denied for admission into the program?" my mother asked, as if irritated by the statement. "Well, the reason is that we currently have a lot of females in the program and we are trying to admit an equal amount of males." the woman replied back. "Well, how many children are enrolled into the AMA program?" My mother questioned in a calm tone. "well, I can't tell you that information" she reply back looking sternly at my mother. As I sat in silence, listening to the words come out of the administrator's mouth, I began to feel tears swell inside of me. I felt as if a huge hurdle has been pushed in front of me as I'm running a race and I'm still contemplating about how I can get over it. I begin to think to myself- It took all that effort, writing, getting recommendations, and filling out the application just to get a response telling me that I can not be apart of an enriching program. I look to the ground to avoid eye contact with the administrator. I felt defeated; I wanted to curl up into a ball until the tears receded back into their rightful place. I thought over repeatedly about what should I say to persuade her; I wanted her to know that I am right for the program. "I have goals that are precious to me and I believe that through this program I will be able to achieve them. Please give me the chance to prove that to you. If i get the chance to prove it I will not fail at showing my potential." I pleaded to the administer. " I'm sorry young lady but I don't think it is possible to admit you." she replies back to me. "Lets go Alexis, we will deal with this later. Goodbye, Miss. Greddle." My mother says while getting up to exit the Building. I follow behind my mother taking the walk of shame thinking about ways that I can get admitted into the program without a hassle.

When I made it home, I walked to my room replaying the whole conversation in my head for better comprehension; It was all so vague. Why I was not admitted into the program? The reason was that students who were recommended were chosen first. I knew that a lot of the people would be recommended for the program because many of my peers were recommended before applications were handed out.

Scholarship / Bachelor's Degree and becoming a prosecutor; Scholarship Essay/ Short&Long TERM GOALS [4]

Discuss your short and long-term goals. Are some of them related? Which are priorities?

That once in the lifetime experience, It is symbolized with caps and gowns, diplomas signifying a successful completion of high school, and hysterical parents acting crazy from excitement of their child(ren) proceeding to the next stage of life. Out of all the short-term goals that seniors add on to their list, the most important one is graduation. What senior can resist the hype of success? It is a vibrant feeling to receive, like holding a newborn baby.

The difference between me and other seniors are that my short-term goal is to graduate as valedictorian with an Honors Diploma. I always fantasize about walking across the stage wearing a cap with a flowing long gown along with the honors graduation sash hanging from my shoulders. As I walk toward the administrators, a feeling of success builds up. Just the thought of receiving my Honors Diploma gives me a tingling sensation. It is like the thrill of riding a roller coaster for the first time. The feeling of accomplishment arriving soon is very exciting. I am awaiting the arrival of success that my hard work has been contributing towards. I am taking more rigorous course to show that anything I put my mind to I will accomplish. Its like a wall is blocking me and with each motivation I build I am tearing it down with my mind.

Other than being valedictorian, participating in a summer internship, at Derrick Strahorn Law Firm, is another one of my short-term goals. I plan to be an intern at this law firm, because I would like to gain working experience and well needed skills for the career path I have chosen. I have always thought of what it would be like to be prosecutor and how these prosecutors work to use the evidence found to pin a person guilty or not. The thought of making decisions to file charges against a defendant, sends goose bumps through my body. Now my next step is changing this thought to aid my long-term goals.

My long term goals are to obtain an Bachelor's Degree, enroll into law school, and become a prosecutor of international criminal courts. I became interested in becoming a prosecutor in the tenth grade when I participated in a Mock Trials program. As I reviewed over the paper work of the case Taylor Henlacks v. Dana Brody, I felt a sense of eagerness as I was deciding if the case should be presented in a criminal trial. It was like watching the mind-blowing ending of Twilight:PART TWO.

My goals of obtaining an Bachelor's Degree and becoming a prosecutor are my priorities and they are related. I know that in college I must work hard to attain a degree in criminal Justice, criminology, and history. I also realize that it will take time, but It is worth it due to the fact that the majors will prepare me for law school. I believe that the more I know about a specific crime and the criminals intention, The better I can provide a criminal court case. It will be just like a sudoku puzzle.

Scholarship / Desperate for guidance; Scholarship-Leadership experience [2]

Essay 5
Discuss a leadership experience you have had in any area of your life: school, work, athletics, family, church, community, etc. How and why did you become a leader in this area? How did this experience influence your goals?

In the media, there are too few role models available for our youth. Those who inspire us in a positive way have disappeared. With results like that, I fear that the future generations will be in jeopardy. Today, in the technological generation, very few kids lack the communication skills they need to survive in an everyday situation. Can people not see that the society we live in is desperate for guidance?

In 2010, I met a girl named Jasmin Sanford, she had a timid personality. Her personality reminded me of how I was when I first began high school. She rarely talked and kept her distance. The girl was comparable to a lioness who has not found her roar. After analyzing her character, I thought she would be vulnerable to a group of troublesome teens. I had a little of knowledge of what conniving upper-class men liked to influence on the lower-class men. Many of upper-class men were like vampires waiting for an edible blood supply. Knowing that, I developed a strong feeling that I needed to help her find a rightful place in the school.

Admittedly, I did not know what I was getting my self into, but I knew that if I took her under my wing she would benefit from whatever I had to offer. As the Months passed, our relationship grew strong. She began to open up slowly and show appreciation towards my guidance. I felt like a big sister watching her baby sister walk for the first time. If she had a problem that stopped her from achieving her dreams, I was by her side to console her and motivate her to continue on. Whenever she made a simple mistake, for example on her math homework. I would correct the problems in her equation then tell her what she did wrong. I tutored her in math to improve her work performance. With a lot of effort she began surpass my skills. Since she had a passion for math, I insisted that she take an Engineering class. I also took the Engineering class to show her that I could try something new. After a semester, She excelled in the class creating expert buildings that were better than mines.
