I focus to learn about wildlife

Being a wildlife veterinarian is always be my passion. Therefore from college, I focused to learn a lot about wildlife. Become a volunteer in some wildlife organization also align with my dream job that I've reached in this day. During my profesional time, I've work with every aspect in wildlife conservation, from clinical aspect in every individual animal, to general matter in population. It help me to see a lot of point of view about the conservation condition and challenge in Indonesia. Consequently, I feel to have to develop my ability to contribute more in my country.

When I have to choose the place for my higher education, UK is the best location for me. There are a lot of world-top rank university with international student and community. In addition, there are many organizations and cooperation between Indonesia and UK in the field of conservation, this can mean a lot for the future. I've chosen the course that related to wildlife conservation. This course will help me to gain a higher capacity in this field.

My first choice is MSc Global wildlife health and conservation program at xxx. This course is very related to my current job as veterinarian in wildlife sanctuary. By joining this course, I can deepen my knowledge and skill in wildlife rehabilitating and captive. I also can expanding my ability in wildlife disease ecology, surveillance and control. This modul is important to help me extending my working field in the future. Both of that things is my reason why I choose this course as my first choice. To improve my skill in clinical aspect, this course also provides practice session in xxx Zoo.

MSc Wildlife Health at xxx is my second choice. The modul in this course will strengthen my ability in management of wild animals and the epidemiology, treatment and control of wild animal disease, both in captive or free-living wildlife. The main reason I choose this University as my second choice is this course also taught joinly by one of UK well-known organization that help Indonesia conservation effort. This mean that I can reinforce the cooperation beetwen Indonesia and UK in the future.

My third choice is MSc Animal Behaviour in XXX XXX University. The modul provided in this course can help me to gain an understanding of the application in animal behaviour and technology that can be applied in conservation. I am interested to learn about animal behavioural ecology and conservation, also DNA based technologies. In Indonesia,those techniques are start to developing as one of the effort to solve modern conservation problem, and there's still few people who focused in this field. So its a prospacable field for me to contribute more. Beside that, this course also have some project site in Indonesia. That means that a good networking can be developed stronger.

my experience in leadership and influence

A leader is one who can encourage his team to move forward, solve the existing challenge with a positive attitude and be open to any idea. Being in my position as a veterinarian in the medical division at Animal Sanctuary makes me have to lead some activity with wild animal. This condition made me have to improve my leadership skills.

On August 2017, this animal sanctuary had plans to move one Sumatran tiger to a bigger natural enclosure, so she can training her muscle before rehabilitation phase begin. To move the tiger, it takes anesthesia process and transportation involving paramedic and animal keepers. This procedure can be life-threatening if it isn't done properly. So I am responsible for ensuring that this translocation is working smoothly. First step that I do was to create a discussion forum for all the personnel who will be involved in the activities. I open the discussion about the translocation flow from the preparation of team members, equipment, transportation facilities, and scenario of anesthesia process. Inside the team there is one new member who looks worried and hesitant because this is his first experience. I try to convince him that everything will be fine if all done according to the procedure. The next step is to divide the task between teams so each person will be focus on their duty.and can get ready. I also specify a deadline deal for the equipment that needs to be prepared. The translocation runs smoothly even in recovery process the tiger has a slight complication of anesthesia. But it can be handled well because the whole team has been prepared with all the possibilities and can take quick action according to my instructions.

My experience in influencing people was conducting public awareness activities on rhino conservation last year. Collaborate with one of Indonesian children storyteller we spread the awareness in Sumatera Island as rhino habitat. There is no fund supporter for this activity. So I take the initiative to create an campaign on the online crowdfunding platforms in Indonesia. In addition to fund raising activities, through this campaign I hope lot of people would taking part in this movement and take the action to save rhino population, even in small part action.

I started to invite my closest friends to support this activity than move to my bigger circle of friend. I also regularly update the news of our awareness activities. At the end of the fund-raising period, the amazing thing was that the total funds collected exceeded the target I specified, with some participation from people I did not know. Finally the public awareness activities are done well. And after that event, the crowdfunding platform was interested in the campaign process. There is also Indonesian young conservasionist organization that also wants to expand this awareness to Borneo island. So they start to do crowdfunding based on what I do before.

That's my experience in leadership and influence. I hope my skill will improve in Chevening positive atmosphere.

utilizing networking in a proper way

Networking will be usefull if we can maintain it better. This is what I feel in my profesional career. Starting from joining four days "Linking Awareness Journey" course with elephant in Way Kambas National Park, my career has been developed. In this course, I met with veterinarians and people who concern with animals. They come from Indonesia as well as another countries such as Japan, Singapore, Germany, South Africa, and Canada. Some people whose I meet in that course help me to gain experience in veterinary field and another networking.

One of people that I meet in that course is Director and founder of ALeRT (The Alliance of Integrated Forest Conservation). He is one of Indonesian rhino expert that has more than 20 years experience in that field. I learned alot from him trough the discussion and activities. He also help me expanding my network in rhino conservation group. Last year I helped him to create Sumatran rhino conservation program in Kutai Barat, Borneo. This is a collaboration work beetwen NGO, local university, and goverment which hold the rhino conservation policy. In this program, I was not only responsible in management of health and reproduction, but also another aspect like population monitoring and public awareness. During that term, I start to have an interest in concept of global wildlife conservation. I realize that wildlife conservation can be succes with the support of all stakeholder.

After completing the program, I have good profesional relationship with some NGO. One of that organization is WWF. WWF also have rhino conservation program in Borneo, Ujungkulon, and Sumatera. Last May, I helped WWF Ujungkulon Program to do their disease surveillance project in Ujungkulon National Park Area. This is a new experience for me in disease surveillance field and enrich my point of view about wildlife health.

Currently, I am working in Animal Sanctuary with a various species of wildlife. When I decide to work as wildlife practitioners, one of veterinarian from "Linking Awareness Journey" course suggest me to work in this sanctuary. She also encouraged me to actively participate in ASLIQEWAN (Indonesian Wildlife Veterinarian Assosiation). This organization is helping a lot to develop my ability as a wildlife veterinarian. There is a time during my work as practitioner, I faced the case that i've never dealt with before, I consulted to the expert veterinarian in that group so I can give the treatment correctly. The networks in this group also make it easier for me to coordinate with veterinarians in other conservation organizations when there is an inter-institutional collaboration.

From my experience above, I can make a conclusion that networks will give a lot of benefit if we can utilized it better. I will use my networks with Chevening community to make a mutual benefit for my country and Chevening Program.
