Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum, and this is my first thread, so I apologize in advance for any lacks, and please do inform me if there is anything I can do to make up for it. I'm applying to a master's program in environmental science in Germany, and hope you could help me review and comment on my application letter below. Fee; free to let me know any further information you may need, and look forward to hearing from you! Thank you so much for your help in advance! :)

learning about the environment protection

Dear Admission Director,

A year after completing my bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in the US, I ventured into the medical technology industry because I was curious if there is anything outside of industrial plants that is more me. During this time, I instead realized that I want to do my part in fighting climate change so that the next generations could find hope in nature when all else fails as I did at my lowest. I, thus, decided that I want to be an environmental consultant, performing both Strategic Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Assessment to bring about a more sustainable Indonesia.

That prompted me to return to school for a master's program and to select Germany as the location of study as it is known for its world-class education. It would also definitely be an honor to learn about and experience firsthand green economy from the pioneer itself, especially after it recently pledged a 54-billion-euro climate protection package. Most importantly, climate change plan demands creativity and teamwork, and exposing myself to the global community would be essential to further expand my horizon, empathy, flexibility, and communication skill.

I was glad to find the master's program in Environmental Science with specializations in Environmental Analysis, Socio-Economics and Environmental Management at the University of XYZ. It offers an extensive depth and breadth of environmental modules from the scientific to the socio-economics aspect, enabling students to be conversant and relate to interdisciplinary perspectives that I find critical when collaborating with diverse stakeholders. There are many hands-on opportunities that enhance student learning experience as well, like the Artenschutz and Landschaftspflege projects with the NABU-Group, and educational activities at Reallabor Queichland. Lastly, the university offers an incredibly comprehensive student support system, such as the Buddy, the SelfiE, and the STAIR programs. To me, all of the above promotes an excellent learning environment that also matches to my career aspiration.

I look forward to complementing the master's program with my professional attributes. In my previous designations, I assessed, diagnosed, and addressed hazards and precautions to workers before permitting work, during which I demonstrated attention-to-detail, strong analytical, teamwork, and communication skills, thus, successfully maintained zero-workplace injuries. I was also elected to create event evaluation reports for the global management team after taking the initiative to propose an improvement to the original template. I studied abroad and lived alone since 2012, throughout which I developed resilience, independence, and open-mindedness. Therefore, I am confident that the master's program along with these attributes and drive to succeed in protecting the environment would make me a well-qualified environmental consultant.

I am very pleased to share that, just three months ago, Indonesia launched a new initiative to adopt circular economy as its national development strategy to solve plastic waste problems. Simultaneously, Climate Transparency reported that deforestation and peatland fires emitted approximately 42 percent of Indonesia's total carbon emissions in 2016. Therefore, after the completion of the program, I plan to return to Indonesia and take part in one of those issues first; This program would definitely open up many doors to achieve that.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my aspiration. I hope to get the opportunity to learn further about the environment from Prof. Dr. ABC and his team, and together protecting it no matter how bleak its future may seem.

I wish you had identified what kind of application letter this is (personal statement, motivational letter, statement of purpose, other type) because I cannot review it in a detailed manner unless I either know what type of paper you are writing for the application (there is no such thing as an application letter) and / or the writing instructions for the letter. In a general manner though, I can tell you that the letter is okay. It is a bit long, focuses on too much information, and doesn't really strengthen your application at this point because it does not have a clear direction nor purpose. So it is alright, in the sense that you made a cover letter for your application forms. That is all this did. Unless you can properly focus the letter based on the prompt requirements, the reviewer may not know how to take all of the information you provided. It just seems to be trying to be all of the application essays all at once, instead of focusing on only one point for the presentation. Kindly remember to post the writing instructions and / or the essay type next time you post here. That way I will know how to direct the corrections for your letter.

@Holt
Thank you very much for catching that and for the feedback :) It is a motivational letter written according to the DAAD guidelines and is currently less than one-page long. The DAAD guidelines specify that I need to explain why I choose Germany and specifically the program, why I think I am the right person for this program, what is my professional goal and how I intend to contribute to the society once I return, and how the program would help me to achieve that.

Do you know by any chance what the ideal length would be, maybe give an example of which information could be omitted/replaced, and share some pointers on how to strengthen the letter?

Noted, I will include the essay type and writing instructions in future posts. Thanks a lot! :)
