7th January, 2012
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you to express my interest in applying for the masters programme in "Engineering Materials Science with particular interest in "XXXXXXX", which is scheduled to begin August 2013. I appreciate this opportunity and I would like to provide further information about my personality and motivation.
I graduated in 2010 with a Bachelors of Engineering in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering with a major in Metallurgy, from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. I was ranked among the top five students with an average score above 75%.
My professional goal is to be a foremost lecturer, Consultant and Researcher in the field of Materials Engineering with particular interest in Materials Selection and Process Design. My undergraduate studies of steel, lightweight metals, semi-conductors, ceramics, polymers and composites had exposed me to the reality and demand of my choice of career and have provided me with the rudiment, which I am optimistic this programme would augment greatly, to achieve my goal.
My first exposure to the field of Materials Science and Engineering was in my Second year during my undergraduate study with "Introduction to Physical Metallurgy" and "Introduction to Chemical Metallurgy". Having entered the university with no clear understanding or enthusiasm of what materials engineering study entails, my interest began to grow as I was exposed to several concepts and materials. The study of "Microstructure of materials" and "Phase Transformations" which revealed to me how the structure of a material could be altered to produce desired properties, triggered an irreversible desire for knowledge of material design and selection.
At the time of graduation, my mind was made up to pursue a career in the field of Material Engineering and Science with respect to Materials Selection and Design, to the extent that I would be able to impact the in-depth knowledge acquired on others.
I am a diligent, hardworking and resourceful individual with a penchant for research and human capacity development. My love for knowledge and capacity development propelled me to acquire a professional training in project management, with PRINCE2 Practitioner's Certificate as prove, which equipped me to go ahead to be a training instructor and a member of faculty in the training institution in which I work. My commitment to personal development and continuous improvement was recently rewarded with an elevation to the position of Research Assistant where my analytical and research skills are being employed.
My interest for experimental research dates back to my undergraduate days, where I and my team members carried out a project on "The Effect of Cooling Rate on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Gray Cast Iron" over several options on Fabrications and Foundry.
Complementing my strong academic performance are my advanced skills in leadership and communication. Coupled to my undergraduate studies I have attended several other professional training courses. In one of the courses consisting group project work, I was appointed as the Team Leader and my responsibilities included distributing project assignments and responsibilities as well as governing interpersonal relationships.
During the compulsory national service programme in my country, I was elected to be the president of a Community Development Service group, a non-profiting group committed to the development of the host communities. I was saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the affairs of the group, assigning duties and responsibilities to members, and galvanizing efforts of the group to assist in the development of the host communities. Under my leadership, a highly ambitious yet selfless project was designed to assist the young indigenes of the rural communities, to empower them with skills and competencies and afterward provide them with financial assistance to become entrepreneurs. This project took I am my team to see the representative of the Minister of Youth Development in my country.
Sweden is renowned for a long tradition of welcoming international students with facts and figures to show for it.
My choice of XXXXXXXX is based on her internationally acclaimed commitment to innovation and research in traditional materials, Nanoscience and nanotechnology coupled with her strong ties with both local and international industries. I am confident of my decision. With many distinguished scientists as professors, I know that I will gain expert knowledge at the forefront of discovery. Further supporting professors' lectures are your university's use of advanced equipment and presence of national research centres. Moreover, by combining my theoretical and specialized education with hands-on research in the second year, I will gain critical work experience. All these strong positives allow me to research cutting-edge technologies, and to pursue my dreams and ambitions.
Given my past history of commitment to excellence, I am confident that I will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to your programme. I am sure to exceed your expectations, because of both my academic and interpersonal skills as well as the experience gained as a research assistant. I will enrich the program by enabling fellow students and professors to benefit from my ambitious and open nature. Furthermore, my international background and interdisciplinary education will add more diversity to your program.
Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to your acceptance.
Sincerely yours,
