Motivation letter for MSc program under 500 words

(I've got 481 words)

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to express my interest in the master's degree program in Material Science Engineering, offered at XXX. I am currently in the final year of my bachelor's at the University of XXX and looking to further my education, with the goal of undertaking a career in the field of material science, particularly in the activities of process design and materials selection.

The undergraduate curriculum allowed me to gain an insightful perspective on the relevance of understanding materials and their properties. Specifically, I found myself deeply interested in the subject of metallurgy. Both the theoretical courses and laboratory sessions allowed me to discover countless and diverse applications of metallurgy worth exploring, convincing me to make it the subject for my final project before graduating. In particular, I find the differences in properties induced by seemingly minimal alterations in manufacturing processes and how said processes can be manipulated to obtain the wanted result quite fascinating. Naturally, being metallurgy the focus of all three tracks in your program, I concluded that XXX would be the best place to continue my studies.

My decision to pursue a career in material science comes as a re-invention after pursuing a master's degree in another field. The unique circumstances attributable to COVID gave me the courage to turn my life in a new direction and prompted me to follow my unanswered passion for science. This turned out to be the right decision, as my career goals have never been as clear as now. However, this process came with the necessity to allocate all my time and energy to complete coursework and exams for my bachelor's in the shortest timeframe possible. Nonetheless, during my previous studies, which I concluded successfully in the prescribed time, I was able to undertake activities that allowed me to acquire valuable skills in leadership and communication and taught me the importance of hard work, responsibility, and accountability. During that time, I took part in various volunteering activities, one of which I was entirely in charge of, from securing funds to figuring out everyday schedules. Moreover, thanks to my study experiences abroad, and my past -and current jobs- I have developed excellent communication abilities in multicultural environments.

One more reason I choose XXX is the high international-student ratio. I believe that stimulating international environments are the best to work and thrive, as different perspectives are taken into account and discussed, and -on the way- new frames of mind are acquired. XXX stands out for both its prestige and strong international educational environment, which I think will enable me to reach my goals.

In conclusion, I believe my educational history in material science and my eclectic background make me a well-rounded student with both the tenacity and the flexibility needed to successfully attend your program. Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

It is very difficult for me to review this essay due to erased information which could have helped me formulate a more appropriate motivation slant and focus. So I will not touch on how to properly develop a motivational letter in this case. Instead, I will just tell you what you did wrong.

This is more of a personal statement than a motivational letter. I would say that only 10% of this is relevant to the motivational discussion. It would benefit your application if you focused on career focused goals in the discussion which does not revert to background discussions. Additionally, you should be discussing internships that could have motivated your goals just to prove that you actually have a career path motivating your passion for studies in this field.
