(PhD AAS Scholarship Supporting Statements)
Dear all, I am from Indonesia. Please give some suggestions regarding my essay....
I am very interested in research about deep learning and its application in classifying COVID-19 x-ray medical images. I have conducted several studies in the diagnosis of medical images such as cervical cancer and diabetic retinopathy using deep learning and the results showed that this method is very reliable. In this scholarship, I will develop deep learning methods to diagnose COVID-19 based on x-ray images. I have explored the Indonesia-Australia Cooperation as outlined in the COVID-19 RESPONSE PLAN, where the COVID-19 outbreak is one of the study priorities. Besides that, study from the neighbor country such as Australia about how to dealing with COVID-19 outbreak using technology would be very beneficial to Indonesia where the outbreak is still in progress. Indonesia as a developing country, with limited paramedics and insufficient tools to diagnose COVID-19, an artificial intelligence-based approach is urgently needed. However, based on several studies, although deep learning is very reliable, it requires a huge number of images to produce a comprehensive knowledge consequently it is time consuming. In fact, the number of publicly available medical images is usually limited. Therefore, this is a challenge to research deep learning methods that dealing with limited data such as COVID-19 X Ray images.I am applying for PhD at Flinders University's Computer Science, because the prospective supervisor I have proposed has a track record of research in the field of medical image analysis using deep learning. Flinders has a Medical Device Research Institute, a place where researchers usually collaborate with industries to produce high quality works that could be applied in real world. Learning in this environment will open the possibility that the results of this proposed research will meet the industrial standards and can be applied as a tool in dealing with current COVID-19 pandemic or other future pandemics in Indonesia
