Please critique my personal statement, any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

-----------------------

Being the son of a Nigerian father and a Thai mother, I have been privileged to have a rich blend of cultures throughout my life. This unique upbringing has not only broadened my worldview but has also equipped me with the ability to connect with people from various backgrounds and seamlessly adapt to new settings.

My name is Emmanuel Alabi. I'm a student with a passion for software engineering and technology in general. I am applying for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering at Korea University of Technology and Education (KOREATECH).

From a young age, I have been surrounded by various aspects of Korean culture, often without even realizing it. My family frequently watched Korean TV programs, which exposed me to the language and cultural nuances. At home, we listened to Korean music, from OSTs to contemporary K-pop. My parents would often discuss popular K-dramas, which sparked my curiosity and appreciation for Korean storytelling. Additionally, I grew up using familiar Korean household brands like Samsung and LG, which have been a part of our daily lives. Although I had never up till now had any direct contact with any Korean institutions or events, Korean culture isn't all too foreign to me.

As I grew up and consequently developed my ability to understand and appreciate things on a higher level, I developed admiration for Korea's technological advancements embodied by companies such as Samsung. I am particularly inspired by Korea's commitment to innovation and its culture of diligence and resilience. I admire the work ethics that are imbibed in the very values of Korean culture.

All of these factors have played a significant role in my motivation to apply for the GKS program. I came across this opportunity at a pivotal moment, and it felt like a perfect fit for my current situation. Although I am currently enrolled in an online university to pursue my degree, I felt compelled to apply to the program because it offers exciting opportunities and a chance to engage with a new society-something I have always aspired to do.

Though I was born in Thailand, I began my educational journey in the UK, where I started my early schooling. Growing up in an English-speaking environment, I developed a strong foundation in the language from a young age.

I began homeschooling when my family moved back to Thailand when I was seven. The decision to homeschool was one of the most impactful in my life so far, as it taught me the discipline and diligence I needed in order to stay on track even in the absence of the structure provided by the conventional school system. It also provided me with the extra time I needed to take up other interests aside from my required academics, and it was around this time that I first discovered my interest in computer programming. During this period, I regularly sought information about the topic, familiarizing myself with the idea of software development and computer science in general.

When I was thirteen, we moved to Rwanda, an experience that broadened my cultural worldview. It was during this time that I intensified my pursuit of software engineering as a career. One of my first major steps was completing Harvard University's Introduction to Computer Science, a course during which I had my first practical knowledge of my chosen path. I later went on to also complete Harvard's Web Development with Python and Javascript as well as Introduction to Cloud and Introduction to Open Source by IBM Cognitive Class. Through these programs, as well as other self-study methods including Youtube and online articles, I developed practical skills in software development, especially web development. For instance, I learnt to build full-stack applications using technologies such as NextJS and Flask.

During this time, I took initiative to help out with my parent's business, which at the time was offering digital signage and other digital solutions for Rwanda. One of my main contributions was the development of its official website, which was used for a significant stretch of time. Aside from this, I also took up several web development side projects of my own, such as a Markdown editor and an URL Shortener. More recently, I decided to run a YouTube channel of my own, hoping to help others who are just beginning their web development journey.

In parallel to my self-directed learning, I enrolled at Acellus Academy, a homeschooling program based in the United States. I undertook six Advanced Placement (AP) courses, including AP Statistics and AP Computer Science. These courses not only challenged me intellectually but also equipped me with critical thinking and analytical skills that are essential for my academic and professional growth. My high school journey wasn't without ups and downs. I occasionally experienced setbacks, which taught me perseverance and ways to overcome obstacles that seemed impossible.

For instance, during my high school one of my chosen subjects was Honors Physics, and I took it during my first year. However, I found the subject difficult and did not grasp the majority of the concepts taught. At the end of that course, I scored an underwhelming 75% score in the final exam and an overall grade of B. Technically, this was a good enough score to pass, albeit just barely, but I knew that I would encounter difficulties going forward in my studies if I didn't address this problem. I took General Physics the next year, and adopted a different study method, placing more emphasis on understanding important concepts rather than memorizing equations. I also used outside resources, such as Khan Academy, to better understand difficult topics. As a result of this, I was able to take Honors Physics again during my last year, and achieved an improved overall grade of A-. More importantly, I now have a better understanding of physics in general.
Despite facing difficulties such as these, I maintained a cumulative GPA which was above 3 for the whole duration of my studies, and eventually graduated with honors and a GPA of 3.70.

Diverse upbringing and experiences have not only shaped my identity but have also fueled my passion for software engineering. The combination of cultural exposure and academic perseverance has equipped me with the skills and resilience needed to thrive in new environments. I am excited about the prospect of studying at Korea University of Technology and Education, where I can further develop my technical abilities while being in a culture that has inspired me for so long. I also look forward to contributing to cultural exchange between Korea and the countries that have shaped my identity.

Thank you for considering my application.

I must say that you have a truly unique and interesting background for a GKS applicant. However, this "special" circumstances of your background, particularly in your education, could be the very hurdles that will prevent the full consideration of your application. The main problem is that you are home schooled. This prevented you from achieving academic considerations that other applicants would have. A GKS scholar must be able to prove his academic excellence through awards, publications, and work experiences. While you have some work experience, It is not fully related to your course of interest and does not cover any professional qualifiers that would prove a solid foundation for your educational foundation. You further weakened your application by admitting to be weak in a particular subject that is pivotal to the course as a student.
