Career Plan question

Although Egypt has great architectural history and possesses excellent efficiency to teach modern architecture, the country is turning into an ugly cement jungle That's why a prolonged process of architectural transformation, is needed in Egypt. Which its impact can be seen on the social and investment levels

My first immediate plan upon returning home is to play a major role in this process that will push forward the architectural paradigm.
The concept of "Sustainability" will be my main point of concentration. Alignment with "Egypt's Vision 2030" and its strategy for sustainable development I will try to spread the concept among architects and laymen to show its importance. My job as a lecturer at the architecture department of the faculty of fine arts will aid me in playing this role. Being a lecturer enables me to reach a lot of professional architects and ambitious students through workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Further, I plan to apply for a job at a construction company and I would like to be responsible for sustainability, environmental management, and the follow-up of materials and products. I will focus on the construction field as a main factor that affects realizing sustainability, there is deficiency happens because of noticeable difference between the environmental design and construction as a result of the cost factor. I would very much like to solve this problem, which is a hindrance to achieving the sustainable development

Further, to achieve the role, which I dream of playing, I will engage in non-governmental and non-profitable activities. I will set up a non-governmental organization that will organize and regulate the relation between, the private and the public construction companies. The connections and relations that I will gain from the Chevening experience will facilitate the achievement of such a dream. In line with UK priorities according to DFID (Department for international development) to achieve the SDGs (The sustainable development goals) Sharing my experience knowledge to move forward development of Egypt

As a part of my career plan, I want to become an authorized professional at LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). And I am sure that the gained course experience will help me to reach this goal. This will happen because it will provide me with the useful knowledge, from which I can start studying the different evaluation systems.

My long-term goals are based on the experience I am looking forward to gaining it. I want to start my own eco-friendly construction company. I want to participate in the making of magnificent and efficient constructions, which will combine the historical and modern identity of Egypt. More, I aspire to make a change to the architecture business in my country and make market transformation. My ambitious character and my ability to make critical decisions concerning my profession will be my base for these goals.

My Passion about the concept of sustainability and my vision of achieving development focused on construction field were my compass to choose these three courses.

My first choice is the University of Bath (Environmental Design), University of Bath has been selected as the best university of architecture earlier in 2017. My decision to study this course stems from my desire to resolve the challenges which face the technical integration of sustainability and the construction process together. I firmly believe that this course will provide me with the needed theories about sustainable architecture, which will help to achieve my vision. More, I am interested in living in the beautiful, rural city of Bath, where historical and modern buildings harmoniously exist.

My second choice course is Sustainable Architecture at University of Huddersfield which has been dignified as a lofty university by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). It would be great to study the modules of Advanced Construction and Building Analysis and BIM (Building Information Modeling). These courses will benefit me in reaching my goal of decreasing the inconsistency between the design and the construction. Moreover, they will teach me to consolidate theoretical and practical sustainable skills. The opportunity to study these courses will ease my future career plan of being a specialist in applying sustainability to the construction process.

My third choice is to study Sustainable Engineering (Architecture and Ecology) course at the University of Strathclyde which has been nominated as a first-rate university for sustainability by the Engineering Education for Sustainable Development. The chance to study at this university will help me to deeply understand the core of sustainability and the importance of projects funding and management. Consequently, I will be an excellent project manager who can enforce a market transformation.

All of the courses mentioned above are relevant to my academic and professional architectural experience. My graduation project which was within the top ten projects on the national level, introduced sustainability as an important concept. Further, I have been fortunate enough to be a part of a team that participated in two competitions about sustainability and Eco house at Ain Shams University and Arab Academy for Science and Technology. Also, recently, I have attended two workshops; one is about building performance simulation and the other is about how building modelling information supports the sustainable design and construction.

Thus, a master degree from a UK university will be extremely beneficial to my future career plans and visions.

A leader must be able to enlighten the future with new ideas and to transform these ideas to shape a new world of tomorrow, it challenge and process,

My leadership skills started developing since I was a child. I was the leader of the team that represented my school at events. At‏ college, I was the elected president of my class, More, I was among speakers in the "Egyptian Universities Youth Week" event.

After my graduation my leadership skills developed, due to my work as a lecturer. It is a big challenge to become a leader who help the students discover their potentials, and direct them into the right direction.

There are several incidents that pushed forward my leadership skills, especially the ones relevant to my students' graduation project. During introducing the project to the students, I thought that the best way to interest the students in the project was to thoroughly engage them in discussions. I paid attention to their ideas and carefully watched how their thoughts developed. I was always there when they needed help. Surprisingly enough, my strategy proved to be beneficial as the students achieved great success.

All of the students handed in their projects except for three students. This motivated me to support these students. I spoke to them, I make positive relationships trying to gain their trust and inducing their inner strength. As a leader, it is important to fundamentally change something in the life of people. Unexpectedly, they managed to submit excellent projects.

After the students had presented their projected, I noticed that their projects lacked a practical experience, I did not have a plan to solve this, but I had a vision. After that the solution I saw to this problem was to train the students at architecture companies. This training was the practical part that complemented their academic education. I suggested this idea to my team of the teaching staff, after discussing the idea they showed agreement, I introduced the idea to the dean. It was not an easy thing to convince him to make the practice part of the project evaluation. However, I managed to convince him.

I wanted to take a leading part in the implementation of my suggestion. I made advantage of my work in a consulting engineering company. It took a lot of time to convince my boss for such a thing. A person can be exposed to legal charges, if s/he makes a mistake in the construction field, my boss was convinced when I persuaded him of the students' potentials. I was afraid of being responsible for such a mission, but I trusted my intuition and my skills. My students and skills did not fail me, they were responsive to the mission under my leadership. They were so efficient that some of them were hired at the company. I was happy as I was able make a difference.

Its journey of my own leadership discover, I have become more confident in and dependent on my leadership skills.

Having a well-established network of supportive professionals, instructors and potential has become an essential part of our live and valuable tool for advancing our career.I have learned how to hone networking, connect with others, hopefully, growing my network through participation in a shared activity, events, and seminars or even through virtual professional network like LinkedIn.

Being part of company that participate in most of architectural exhibition and conferences and able to build strong relationships network with other companies, specialist and different clients helped me to make connections with different architects and specialist as I represented it in a lot of events and held a lot of clients' meetings.

I can't also deny that participation in various undergraduate events provided me with strong network of relationships which was very helpful for me when my company was responsible for the implementation and supervision of "mega project" facades using smart materials. I immediately remembered the architect whom I met while attending the exhibition of Society of Egyptian Architect to present my graduation project, who's the head of designers at the company which I had been commissioned to deal with. I was in touch with him in the past two years, we had a trade discussions about architectural events. I contacted him and he gave me all the information I needed and helped me in the process the choice of materials as a specialist in this field. Later he gave me a lift to the engineer responsible for the financial part, which provided me the best deals and special discounts. Since then my company developed firm relationship with this company which benefited it and helped to increase profit, for they agreed to provide my company with the needed materials for the lowest prices.

Since I started working in my company, it has gained a lot the development of my professional network relationships. I was invited by old customers to our company which works in the field of sustainability and was aware of my interest in this field during our dealings in many interviews to be among the speakers at the seminar about the importance of sustainably and how the world is concerned with this idea in the 21st century, he always though that I have a different vision about this idea. By the end of the discussion he introduced me to a young architect who happened to have considerable experience in the field of sustainability and scientific research in a lot of countries which always offers me help when I need it.

Becoming a Chevening scholar will allow me to engage with other scholars in my field, extending my professional network, open many doors for me to build up my career. A leader must be able to enlighten the future with new ideas and to transform these ideas to shape a new world of tomorrow, it challenge and process to discover people potentials, and direct them into the right direction.

The most experimental for my leadership skills was when my company got a project as a consultant to restore an existing building and improve the environmental issues that were already applied on it, in-order to improve building's efficiency. My manger recommended me to follow up the work, because he was aware of my interest about green architecture. I was just a fresh graduate with a limited experience and any mistake would cost the company a great loss. I started contacting some engineers who have an experience in this field whom I have known during undergraduate; they guided me and made me realize some important points.

On the next day, I started working according to the plan; I mingled with Foreman, contractor and trade's staff. They used to share a lot of stories about their experiences with green buildings, their frustrations about the quality of construction on the green buildings, and how the consultants never valued their concerns. Although the building looked like great, but it was very bad for the Operations and Maintenance. The building generated ten times more work orders than any other building, the staff was so frustrated.

I realized that I needed a different mechanism to motivate my staff to provide input and to engage them effectively with courage and collaboration. A one day workshop on how to improve construction in the green buildings could be a good solution. I discussed the idea privately with the facility managers and the trade's staff to introduce my plan to them and to set the vision, allowing people to communicate and share their perspective without being challenged by their superiors. They agreed on the idea and supported me to move a step forward.

During the workshop everyone wrote his /her own creative ideas regarding this topic, and then we read them. A bunch of great ideas came out supported by their peers.We dissected and analyzed every idea and then sorted and compared them. I started drawing a mind map and offering my suggestions for actions based on the mind map.I kept my ears open for counter suggestions.It made people feel that I was following them as well while I was leading them.

After the workshop they were responsive to the mission and were so efficient. What came out of the workshop, we got a report include the needs for civil work, building materials, electrical work and commissioning.The report was drafted, edited, vetted and used for the project. It was a grand success. During construction they were very supportive and we finished our mission successfully. The accomplished work was welcomed with a great encouragement from the supervision consultant. I was happy as I was able to make a difference and I have become more confident and dependent on my leadership skills.
