Dear All, Dear Mary (Holt),

I hope everything is going well with you.

I'm planning to get unconditional offers, for postgraduates, from 3 UK Universities and have made many searches and still have questions that I hope you'll help me with ..

So, my first (1) question is: Since I want to study (Education), is it acceptable to start my personal statement talking about my professional experience in the field, my qualifications/skills, and linking it with the harsh conditions the Palestinian teachers and students live, which encouraged me to choose the course?

Is starting with this and emphasizing on some records to show the need for such course will be considered a "development of my interest in the course"? For example:

"I have been working in the educational and cultural field for five years, during this time, I could ....... . According to the Unicef, the number of students ....., etc

is that okay?

My second (2) question is: If I've chosen the same course in the 3 universities, can I use the same essay taking into consideration universities' modules & facilities singularity? Is it going to appear on the plagiarism tool used by the admissions of the 3 universities?

My third (3) and last question is: When writing my postgraduate personal statement for the universities, Is it okay to use some parts of the same essay I've sent to the scholarship (Chevening)? Like to use the introduction and some parts related to my professional experience and qualifications?

Thank you for your genuine efforts to help me and the rest of our colleagues to improve our skills and work.

Thanks God I was long-listed for Chevening and this is because of your help especially (Holt/Mary Rose) who helped me a lot and clarified many many things to me ..

Now they've asked me:
1- to upload my "Education documents" and I do not understand what does this mean. I've sent them an email to ask about this and still waiting for an answer as I've already uploaded my university certificate before the mid of February.

2- to inform my referees to send their reference letters.

What will happen next? Does being long-listed means that I'll be invited to the interview in April? Do the referees make difference? Are Chevening reviewers looking for powerful reference letters and not only positive ones?

Essays / Chevening Networking Essay and Career Plans Essay - questions before I start [2]

I hope you are doing great with your essays :)

Some inquiries in regard to my chevening essays

I have 3 questions and hope the Forum reviewers and colleagues will be available to help me.

1: In my Networking essay, I highlighted (3) short examples about my networking essays where I connected my students with international colleagues, built positive relationships with schools through activities and helped a team of young writers to get fund to expand their work. And at the end, I wrote about 5 lines clarifying that I'm going to benefit from this special opportunity, willing to exchange my experience with others and share what I'm going to learn once I'm back home. Is it sufficient?

2: In my career plan essay, as I'm working in the field of education and the only British organization here in Palestine is the British council which is working on a few programs which are not permanent, can I say that my short-term goals is to start long-term cooperation between my organization and the British council on various projects and help in sharing the values and strategies of the British educational system here in Palestine?

3: Regarding the short-term and long-term goals. Is conducting workshops and activities - within the organization I work for - to share the experience I learned in the UK with my beneficiaries here and making interventions on the curricular can be considered as short-term goals where as planning to work as a freelance consultant in 5 years can be considered a long-term goal? Unfortunately, I couldn't understand and differentiate between the short-term and long-term goals ..

Essays / Regarding the Referees in Chevening Networking Essay [9]

inquiry regarding "Networking Essay"

Hello everybody,

I hope you are doing very well ..

I have an enquiry regarding "Networking Essay" especially for EssayForum's editors, do we have to mention the names of people who are going to write our letters of recommendations? For example, I was able to connect with 2 American university professors who are at the same time famous writers, we participated on creative writing workshops and book discussions and became friends too. We know each other for about 2 years and we still cooperate on many things. They are happy to write recommendations for me but the question is: Can I use their names in my essay and for the scholarship letters taking in account they are not working with me in person (professional referee) and have never taught me at the university (academic referee? (neither academic nor professional)

My second question is: Do you think if I asked one of them to write for me as a professional referee where we worked together online and not in person, Chevning will accept that as they are not my teachers and not my work managers or partners here in Gaza?

I was thinking of asking my general director here in Gaza to write a letter for me, along with one of my academic teachers at the university, but I can't mention them in my networking essay as there is nothing special can be mentioned about our relation concerning networking skills .. we have done nothing special together, but they believe in my skills and my proficiency ..

the "Leadership" essay question

Good Evening everybody,

I have applied for Chevening Scholarship last year and was not selected, hence, I have decided to apply once again this year with stronger essays to avoid what happened last year.

I have a question concerning the "Leadership" essay. I have read a lot of online essays and met colleagues who have got the scholarship, most of them said your essay should include clear examples of: specific problem, your role, your solution, the outcome. But, in my essay I started talking about my humble leadership skills since I was a kid "primary" leading school's sports and activities until I became a university student and won a writing competition and led a team of volunteers at a cultural institute. Then, I started talking about my position as an English language teacher and how I am helping non-native children to acquire new language and skills and how I enabled them to express themselves confidently, expand their knowledge and improve their academic and personal skills. Does it seem without mentioning detailed examples? or I have to give examples for each position or level in my life since I was a student? Taking into consideration, I have tried to, but there were no clear examples to mention unless those related to my current work.
