Statement of purpose

I am an accounting degree holder with professional experience as a consultant who wants to gain deeper knowledge about finance, especially in global finance. I obtained my bachelor's degree at the Institute Perbanas with a focus on auditing and joined an international class program, which means all the material I learn during my studies is delivered in English. Where throughout my studies, I actively participated in a seminar related to leadership, economic development, and entrepreneurship that assisted me in escalate both my soft and hard skills. Meanwhile, I used to work as an internal auditor in an insurance company, which gave me an understanding of organizations' management and business processes, but working as a consultant, especially in advisory at a public accounting firm, gives me different experience by handling different projects with various clients. I learned a lot of practical business cases that assisted me in improving my analytical skills. However, from the experience I have gained, there is still a gap of knowledge that I need to fulfil to be a management consultant with focus on finance improvement and I decide to pursue my master's degree at South Korea.

South Korea is a developed country that has become the tenth largest economy in the world as well as one of the countries that is concerned about education. Therefore, I believe continuing my studies in South Korea will give me a valuable lesson and bring me to a new experience of studying overseas. One of the important things before studying overseas is to learn a new language. As preparation before arriving in South Korea, I learned the Korean alphabet, memorized some basic vocabulary, and understood short sentences to help me communicate with the natives. Furthermore, in August 2022, I participated in online Korean summer courses offered by K-Dreamvision, Namseoul Continuing Education Center, and Cakap to gain an understanding of Korean culture.

During my master's program, I am planning to complete all the required and optional courses offered by the university to meet the requirements for graduation. My studies will focus on broadening my knowledge of financial management, investment, financial markets as well as financial data analysis. While studying for a master's degree program, I would like to actively participate in seminars and workshops that are provided by the university or other institution to get a deep insight into certain fields and expand my network by having direct interaction with other students, especially with the locals, to encourage me to communicate in Korean as well as media to exchange ideas and experience.

After completing my master's degree and graduating from the university in South Korea, I expect to be able to use all the theories and practical to be fundamental for my professional career. Before returning to Indonesia, I intended to do an internship as a consultant in one of the companies in South Korea to apply what I had learned and gain experience dealing with the company's current issues. Afterwards, I am going back to my hometown to continue my professional career as a consultant, focus on working in a consulting firm that provides services to manufacturing companies. Its aim to assist the company's financial management and ensure the company's going concern. My intent is to maintain bilateral relations between Indonesia and South Korea in economics related to export.

I was born into a well-off family, and I am very grateful because my parents can support me until I got my bachelor's degree. Even though my parents' education background is not as high as I am due to limited access to education, my father can prove that he can work in a big company and support their children's education with that limitation. My parents once said to me, "Learning is the key to success and the world is bigger than you think". He taught me to explore more places, learn new things, meet new people, and expand networking. Since I was a child, I dream about studies overseas and learn a new language. It is a challenge for me, but my parents cannot support me financially because they do not have enough saving. That is why I decide to apply for a scholarship to support me.

I graduated from Institute Perbanas Major in Accounting. I joined an international class program, which means all the material is delivered in English. When I was in university, I actively participated in a seminar related to leadership and entrepreneurship to increase my soft kill and expand my networks. In my second year, I got a chance to attend as a participant in the Business law studium generale with a lecture from the University of Newcastle, Australia. It was the most precious experience I ever had because they delivered the materials in a fun way. Furthermore, I was once shortlisted for a full scholarship provided by a university that collaborates with a bank. However, they suddenly reduce the number of recipients and result in me not getting the funding.

I worked as an external auditor for two years before I changed my profession to be an internal auditor in one of Indonesia's reinsurance companies. Working as an external auditor help me to understand financial statement disclosure and introduce me to various forms of financial statement from several fields. I am experienced in audit rubber and palm oil, Non-profit company and even investment management company. While working as an external auditor, my supervisor once recommended me to lead the audit project because he trusted me so well. But after that, I decided to explore my knowledge and change my profession to be an internal audit in a reinsurance company. Here I learn to write my report and understand the whole business process, I also actively join in a company event such as events for assurance communities, company anniversary or any social event such as corporate social responsibility.

Working in an insurance company made me realize the importance of financial management and strategic investment in managing risk. Many companies are forced to close in the pandemic era because their financial conditions are not ready to face the worst scenario. That is why I plan to be a financial advisor or consultant to help a company decide when facing difficulty.

To achieve my career goals, I need to expand my competence and knowledge in finance, management, and investment. Besides that, building a network is also crucial because networking will help me learn about new study cases that I never experienced before. I also want to increase my soft skills in leadership and communication. Based on my needs, I choose to continue my master's degree in business administration in South Korea. Department of business in some universities in South Korea already accredited from AACSB, which means the universities provide top-quality education, and South Korea is one of the countries that concern about education. I believe studying in South Korea will help me to achieve my career goals.

Networking essay for Chevening

Networking is about building a connection between an individual or a group by sharing knowledge, information or anything through experience while joining in a community. Networking is not always about what you gained through the experience but also about giving feedback to other communities or individuals, it is also about maintaining the connection you have. Furthermore, I gained my networking skills through my experience as an Internal audit.

I currently working as internal auditor in reinsurance company and perform regular audit. Last year the company just changed the audit methodology into risk-based audit whereas the Internal Audit needs to identify and analyst the business risk that faced by the company and choose the audit object based on the company's risk priorities that have been determined by risk management. However, to obtain quality audit result, the Internal Audit needs to improve their Analyst skills and knowledge notably in business risk. Me along with my team are aware with our limitations, then we took an initiative to look up for an online seminar or join in group sharing session.

While searching on the website, I have found a platform of Internal audit community across multiple company and industries where the internal audit can learn and collaborate. The platforms offer virtual events to learn from the experts and discuss current audit related topics. Afterwards, they also provide shared resource for internal audit to share their audit working papers, questionnaire, and other tools to assist all members in complete their job and add value to the organization. I was fascinated to part of the community and decide to join the virtual event with topics discussion about the implementing of risk-based audit. During the occasion, I met other participant with various background, but most of it working as internal auditor. Moreover, the speaker delivered the material in interactive way, He provide an example and even prepare some quiz. After the event is over, I joined a group related to enterprise risk management and internal audit to engage in further discussion, give feedback to other participant by sharing resource and maintain the connection by keep contacting through the platform and social media. By join in the communities, I gained in- dept knowledge as an Internal Auditor especially understanding risk-based audit, upgrade my communication skills as well as expand my networking with an expert around the world.

Through my experience in building my networking skill, I believe it will be beneficial for my future career, especially for developing global networking through participating in the Chevening scholarship and joining the community. While joining the community, I will be actively participating in the Chevening event and volunteering to meet and work together with other Chevening communities from other countries. By join in Chevening community I hope to expand my network globally as person and professional as well as help the Chevening communities in fulfill their duties with my connection.

LEADERSHIP AND INFLUENCE ESSAY

Throughout my experiences, I learned that character-based leaders are lead from the power of who they are rather than from their position of authority or designated job tittle. A leader build on technical and professional skills over time, believe with his/her own abilities and use the strengths to achieve goal for common interest. Aside from growing the competence, a leader must have a good communication skill by delivering an idea clearly and empowering others to give a positive impact on the society.

I used to be an external auditor for two years until I have got new offering to be an internal audit in one of reinsurance company in Indonesia. Even though I do not have an experience working as internal audit before, but I accept the opportunities as a new challenge. On the first day as internal audit, my supervisor gives an explanation about the audit process and shows a list of projects that must be completed at that time. She also said that this is a team project carry out by three members who are more experienced in this field, and I was motivated to do my job well.

On the first project, I got an instruction from my supervisor to identify if there is any lack of control in payment submission process and ensure all the process are running effectively and efficiently by performing audit procedure. Before audit begin, I do a lot of research by reading standard operational procedure, understanding business process, inquiry the auditee and asking the supervisor for an advice if necessary. During audit period, I have always shared my thought and discuss it with my team whenever I found something unusual. After carrying out several audit procedures, I have discovered some of payment submission does not provide enough supporting document and resulting in delayed or late payments. There are no guidelines regarding the completeness of payment submission documents and a list of what documents must be attached, is only at discretion of the finance department. To resolve the issues, I propose a recommendation to add list of supporting documents on payment submission form and create a guideline of payment submission. I convey the idea in communicative way to make it easy to understand and provide an example. After long discussion, all team member along with the head of finance department approved my recommendation. My supervisor said she was satisfied with my work, and I got a valuable experience on this project.

Based on my experience, I have managed to improve my knowledge and use my abilities to obtain a better result for common good. I also managed to express my ideas and convince my team. I believe by improving my professional skills and joined the scholarship I can make a positive impact and contribute to economic growth in my country.
