Undergraduate / 'Running my first 400 meter race' - bard college supplement [5]

sorry...here is the prompt
B) The Roman philosopher Seneca, writing in the first century, wrote a set of letters of advice to a young friend. In the 23rd letter he wrote, "Make this your business: learn how to feel joy...true joy, believe me, is a serious thing." Write a short response to these thoughts, indicating if you wish, the extent to which you may have come to realize that Seneca was right.

-B) The Roman philosopher Seneca, writing in the first century, wrote a set of letters of advice to a young friend. In the 23rd letter he wrote, "Make this your business: learn how to feel joy...true joy, believe me, is a serious thing." Write a short response to these thoughts, indicating if you wish, the extent to which you may have come to realize that Seneca was right.

Running my first 400 meter race and looking at the finish line so close. My strides begin to widen knowing the end is near as I hear aching feet pounce on the ground and my legs are so heavy, my stomach is cramping, my arms wanting to collapse and lay by my side and I'm struggling to breathe, feeling my heart beat faster. But only 10 long meters left and I cannot slow down as I hear the encouraging cheers from the stands, coaches, friends, family. I can distinguish almost every voice. And I am so tired. Strength from those supporting me filled my body with joy, knowing that I have support and that I am capable. I hear my little brother yelling my name and a smile cannot help but to run across my face as I pass the finish line.

One of our priorities on Earth is to acquire the true feeling of joy. With joy we are able to accomplish more than we would have thought possible for ourselves. When Seneca gave the advice to a friend stating: "Make this your business: learn how to feel joy...true joy, believe me, is a serious thing" I cannot agree more with such a motivating statement. While considering the extent to which Seneca is correct about joy, I have convinced myself further that joy is our destiny. I have realized the importance of joy and where it has lead me. His advice is inspiring, for joy is what gives one strength. In the midst of trials we have joy within to help us persevere.

Seneca believes joy to be such a serious thing because, joy is what gives us the power to conquer. I think of a quote from the Bible which states, " The joy of the Lord is your strength."

The lord is responsible for our joyous experiences, we must use these experiences to lift us up and help us fulfil. When I think of joy, I begin to smile as a reminisce on moments in my life where I felt the most happy. I think of the first words I herd my timid brother sing on a stage in front of his entire school. This gives me bravery to continue to be who I am. Winning my first tennis match after a long loosing streak, tough me never to give up. Being promoted to first trumpet, taught me if I work hard enough I will succeed. Observing my sisters art work shows me there is a bright side to any situation. Receiving my first A in AP English, gave me confidence and to never to doubt myself. Dancing with my Mother taught me there is always a reason to smile. These are all things that inspire me and in times where I have felt my lowest, I can turn to these joyous accounts knowing that there are more to come if I continue to strive. Experiencing joy has lead to my strength.

Undergraduate / 'curious as to why people do certain things and act certain ways' - NYU [9]

Regardless of whether or not you have an intended major or concentration, please elaborate on an academic area of interest and how you wish to explore it at NYU's campuses in New York or Abu Dhabi or at one of our global academic centers around the world. Please share any activities or experiences you have had that have cultivated your intellectual interests leading you to choose to study at the NYU campus of your choice.

While growing up and especially now in my life I have always been curious as to why people do certain things and act certain ways. Human behavior has always been an interesting topic that I love to observe and discover new things. To be able to pursue an education and career answering various questions that I have had and observing the human mind is ideal for me. I find New York University to be the best place for me to apply my love for psychology into the various classes that are available. This year for an English project we had topics and characters to choose for the novel we recently completed and we would give a presentation. When I saw the psychoanalytic theory was available I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to study and teach the class on something I find to be immensely interesting to me. Completing this project did not seems as if it was homework, I took joy in doing the research and analyzing the various characters in the book. The only trouble that I had was limiting all that I had learned into one worksheet to share with the class. Completing this project further helped me realize that this is what I want to do since I enjoy it so much. I am excited to begin studying in such an intriguing field, and what other place to do that the best, New York University where I am able experience research projects and many opportunities to study in the abundance of fields that are offered.

Undergraduate / New York life / Middlemarch' Dorothea - NYU Supplements [6]

Why NYU?

Although I have lived in New York my entire life and only an hour away from the city I have not been granted with the opportunity of visiting New York City. The few times that I have, I can remember the feelings that I acquire while being surrounded by crowds of different people and the buildings... The environment is surreal and welcoming, I enjoy it immensely. To attend a college in the city, and at that contains much of the criteria that I look for in a college seems to be unattainable. However, since it is the perfect fit for me I know it must be possible. Attending New York University will help me to discover who I am by being able to experience the opportunities that flourish throughout the University. There are a wide variety of cultures and people that I have never been able to encounter and would love to learn from. The extra curricular activities will assist me in involving myself in new things to try to discover the person that I am, and develop a...person inside of me. One of the programs that I have caught my eye and want to pursue at NYU is the study abroad program. Never being able to visit anywhere outside of the United States, my mother would always tell me "Travel with your mind." I have read of so many places that I wish to visit and learn from and by attending NYU these opportunities and so many more will be obtainable.

What intrigues you? Tell us about one work of art, scientific achievement, piece of literature, method of communication, or place in the world (a film, book, performance, website, event, location, etc.), and explain its significance to you.

In the novel Middlemarch by George Eliot we are shown the inside of a judgemental, high class society circulated with rumors and the main priority being, to become higher in social class.Although this took place in ... this mirrors our society today. We are shown an example of what is a correct lifestyle and are expected to resemble this example. In Middlemarch there is a character who I find appealing because she refused to follow society and choose what she believed to be accurate according to her life. She intrigues me to follow her example. Her name is Dorothea and for a woman of her time she was educated beyond the point where any woman was expected to be educated, and this because she choose to want more for herself. While the lives of the rich and poor were separated, Dorothea attempted to help the less fortunate. One of the most captivating qualities Dorothea posses is being brave enough to follow her heart when everyone is against her judgement. Society forbid Dorothea to marry her true love, for he was poor. When Dorothea marries this man she will loose all of her money and will be looked down upon. Dorothea's bravery to ignore the judgements of others and follow her heart is inspiring. I plan on staying myself through out my entire life despite the views of others, for my moral beliefs are far more important. In order to also be happy I recognize that I must not follow the lead of others but my heart rather. Dorothea intrigues me to travel the path my heart creates.
