Undergraduate / "got me wishing I'm a Yalie" - Why Yale?=Short answer [29]

Thanks Susan. I was beginning to think that my thread is invincible until you left reviews.
Your reviews are highly appreciated by me.
What about the other answers to the questions on the Yale supplement, no revision?

I made the corrections you pointed out.

Looking out the window of my dad's car, all I could see were the unhappy faces of children deprived of their rights to a good home and education, pushed by their parents to beg for alms. Coming from a family of means, I do not know what it is like to live in destitution, being forced to beg for a living. But strangely, I felt a connection to them.

Throughout my childhood, my father was always the one responsible for making decisions relevant to my upbringing. I have always considered that to be standard parenting, until recently when I made a career decision and he entirely turned it down.

I could not imagine defying my father's orders, possibly jeopardizing my freedom and future. But after a while, I grew discontented with having every decision made for me. I felt the urge to act for myself, just as my mother had when she decided to plant her roots in a foreign country.

Having heard various stories, where kids are not given the freedom to make their own career choices, I never thought that I would be faced with the same dilemma; a dilemma in which I would have to choose between defying my father's wishes or jeopardizing my freedom and future.

Thinking back on the children I saw from my father's car, I understood what the connection I shared with them was. It was deprivation. This realization motivated my decision to pursue my career choice of becoming a Psychologist, because I know that acquiescing with the career decision he made for me ultimately meant forfeiting happiness.

Even if this ends up being abortive, that feeling that I stood up for what I thought right would always be a satisfaction. And with this mentality, I can now confidently make the decisions for myself that will best help me find happiness in whatever I do in life.

Undergraduate / "got me wishing I'm a Yalie" - Why Yale?=Short answer [29]

The last thing i would ever do is go to a source to help write my essay.
The last essay was written by me, I didn't go to any source. I wouldn't do that.
You can check my other threads, it is the answer I wrote for the Amherst prompt and the contributors helped me with the reviews that helped in making it a better essay

So i thought I could also use it for the Yale supplement.
Please leave reviews on how to make the other responses better.

Answer: You are more beautiful in person than in pictures of you. I received the compliment from my sister's friend.

Answer: I would love to witness the beginning of the fight for women's suffrage, because i'm a person who believes that women and men should be given equal rights.

Question: What do you wish you were better at being or doing?
Answer: I wish i'm better at being less candor.

Question: If you were choosing students to form a Yale class, what question would you ask here that we have not?
Answer: What are your first 5 favorite recordings?

Question: What in particular about Yale has influenced your decision to apply? Please limit your response to the space provided.

Answer: "I came to Yale for the students...I try to teach each student as somebody who is going to do something very meaningful and influential in life".

This reflects all I want in a college were I'm going to be spending 4 years, in order to pursue my career in Psychology.
Hence, if a Yale professor of Psychology uttered such quote, as coming to Yale for the students, then I want to come to Yale not only because of

its outstanding residential college system but because I want to be one of those students Professor Marvin Chun came to Yale for.

Undergraduate / "got me wishing I'm a Yalie" - Why Yale?=Short answer [29]

Thanks Claudia. I've a more developed reason of Why i want to attend Yale.

YOUR OPINIONS WILL SURELY BE VALUED.

I'm trying to get a head start with the answer to the Yale supplement.
While I was going through Yale's website, I came across a quote made by Marvin Chun, Professor of Psychology and Mater of Berkeley College. It is about him coming to Yale for the students.

I want to link the fact that if a Professor of Psychology(whom I probably will be attending his lectures being a prospective International student that will be majoring in Psychology), said such a thing as coming to Yale for the student then I want to come to Yale not only because of it's world-class education or it's comfortable residential college system but because I want to have a world- class education under such authorities like Marvin Chun among others, who has an undeniable passion of Lecturing his students.

In addition, at the beginning I'm thinking of writing about the welcoming atmosphere when i checked the Yale's website for the first time. With the starting phrase -----> Why Yale? Because the first thing my eyes were glued as a first time visitor to on yale.edu/, was "Welcome to Yale". This only creates a welcoming and embracing atmosphere that got me magnetized to Yale.

Undergraduate / "got me wishing I'm a Yalie" - Why Yale?=Short answer [29]

Thanks Kevin.I'm going to check the website.
What I'm trying to convey through the essay is that, it was only Yale's website that had a welcoming atmosphere all through while I was making a list of colleges to apply to, and that made me feel welcome.

By what you said, do you mean that this is not good enough?
Please leave reviews.
Thanks
Tanvi you need to create a new thread for your essay.

Undergraduate / "got me wishing I'm a Yalie" - Why Yale?=Short answer [29]

This is just a draft of the short answer in the Yale supplement.

Why Yale? Because the first thing my eyes were glued to on yale.edu/, was "welcome to Yale". This only creates a welcoming and embracing atmosphere that got me magnetized to Yale.

In addition, Yale appealed to me through its dedication to it's international student website. The fact that the the site reflects more on the Coming to Yale section got me wishing I'm a Yalie already.

I can't find myself going in-depth through other colleges International student website as I did with that of Yale. In as much as Yale is an outstanding exemplar of a College that takes into absolute consideration, the happiness of it's students makes the best place for me.

Undergraduate / Common application, the evolution of Yu-Ju Huang. [5]

While most people believed that the extinction of dinosaurs resulted from the collision of meteors which are six miles in diameter, that forced large amount of debris into the atmosphere and prevented the penetration of sunlight, the asteroid theory also apply to my life. The meteor that suddenly struck into my life was, however, too large to calculate.

At the end of grade eight, my father sledded a one way airplane ticket to Canada in between the pages of my textbook "Aiming for Perfect Score in the Competence for Junior High School Student". The next think I recalled, I was standing at the airport with a red suitcase and my cello.

....At first I thought the ability of effectively communicating was the key. After moving to Kingston, I realized there must be a deeper modification within me. I abandoned my pride and wore the coat of humor with a sense of buoyancy and humbleness/humility, hoping to live through and even warm up the plunging environment.

....Instead, through these activities I participated in and the diverse people I have interacted with, I gradually evolved from a placid fern into a human being with compassion.

You've got some good comparison in your essay.I made some corrections that I could make.
Please leave feed backs on my essays.

Undergraduate / (financial aid awarded by the college to foreign students) U of Chicago supplement [5]

Thanks Susan for the correction. Tmiplease i guess i'm just going to drop University of Chicago off the list, because that fact that it's the only non-Ivy league school that offers a full financial aid package to international students, is the only reason I added it to my college list.

Undergraduate / (financial aid awarded by the college to foreign students) U of Chicago supplement [5]

Any criticism and corrections would be appreciated.

One of the various factors and the most important of all that affects my choice of colleges is the financial aid awarded by the college to international students.

Having searched for colleges that offer full financial aid package to International students, all the results yielded were 6 colleges all of which are Ivy leagues , however I wasn't comfortable with idea of being limited and restricted to only Ivy leagues.

However a new door was opened when I stumbled upon and found out about University of Chicago, a non-ivy league school but an equal match to what I would call an Ivy-league. Then it dawned on me that I didn't just stumble upon the discovery of University of Chicago. It is an opening to new opportunities in addition to its generous financial aid policy.

Undergraduate / "whatever decision I make with my co-members" - extracurricular activities or work [21]

I have been so lucky during my high school experience to help my father everyday after school. My dad has taught me many things such as: Thirst to always strive to be the best. I enjoy going home each day knowing there is someone there relying on me.

Helping my dad creates a platform whereby I practice and learning new leadership skills and following my instinct. These experiences motivate me to thrive for the best and be persistent in whatever I choose to do in the future. I was able to perform excellently and excel in my school activities, some of which are science club, the Debate team and the student government, due to the knowledge being instilled in me by my father. In these activities, I practiced teamwork and leadership and I've always had full confidence in my decisions; however, I am still open to my team's other ideas.

Could you please check my other essays. I need help with reduction of the word count.

Writing Feedback / "I'm on plane to Africa, WHAT!!" - FIRST UNDERGRAD ESSAY [6]

This essay is good, but it is missing something, something that makes it more alive and eloquent.I do hope you know the meanings of those words included in your essay and you didn't just include them to impress the admission officers. You only need to include words which you know the meanings and that you can use in your everyday lexicon.

Goodluck.

Undergraduate / 'Muddy and sweaty uniform' - Early Decision essay for dartmouth [4]

You need to include what motivated you to give your friend your ration, while you weren't supposed to and this essay fits well under this category below:

''Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you''

Undergraduate / "involved in a motoring incident" - a significant experience- COMMON APP FOR HAVARD [6]

This is just what i've got so far, ammendments would be greatly appreciated.

I never for once thought that I could come close to being humble. In my own perspective humility was only portrayed by those who are retarded. I was the girl who always thought highly of herself and who looked down on people. Unknown to me I was living a life filled with darkness with no glimpse of life. Imagine how dreadful and lifeless the night skies could be without the moon and star lights. I've heard of how people are been saved from their darkness, but I never thought I would be a victim.

My mum would always tell me you had better change the way you behave now or you are going to change in the hard way, I always did turn a deaf ear to her; but not until when I was at the brisk of death did I realize the value of her words.

I was somewhat saved from my world of darkness by a painful and bitter life changing incident.

Being involved in a motoring incident gave me an insight on life at the glimpse of death, staying entrapped in the car, with memories of my past flashing through my mind uncontrollably .The thoughts of never going to college, of never becoming the girl my mum wanted me to be, made me weep uncontrollably. With no hopes of survival and each second passing by with the tenacious grip of fear of the end of my era, darkness drew nearer. Fighting to stay alive I made a promise that should I ever survive I would definitely make a change and be a person my mum has always wanted me to be.

Towards the last fifteen minutes before I became unconscious my mom's words rung in my ear; her words about the second chance I have at changing, was the only source of strength I had, it was what got me through the unconsciousness.

Waking up at the hospital and seeing the tears on my Mum's cheeks while she was by my side made me sober, then I realized that I was destined and opportuned to have a mother like her, and that gave me the assurance that I could live a life filled with nothing but virtues and humility.
