Essays / Twelfth Night Essay Structure [5]

This suggested essay outline may help~ budurl.com/EssayOutline

With regards to what you have so far~
Intro:
Twelfth night is a satirical comedy of the 16th century. [What is satire? Was this style the norm in 16th cent or a new form of play...? Bit of background of culture and society at this time. How important was theatre?]

Twelfth night is an epitome of Elizabethan comedy. [Why?] In a production of the play most if not all of the audience would find the play entertaining. [Why?] The play is named Twelfth Night after the festival "Feast of fools" as it is fairly selective in its irony. It mainly mocks the prosperous and praises the inopportune. The theme and duality of the play is master become servants and the servants become masters.

Although some may argue that it is somewhat [of] a tragedy as it [this is not specific enough: covers some of the critical elements for one]...give the reader examples of the "critical elements" of a tragedy.

Why is it useful to analyse this play in the 21st century?

Body:
1. One of the elements being that misfortunes are not overlooked but are in fact charitably placed in the play for structural purposes. [Give examples, be specific so that the reader see how you concluded that things are charitably placed for structural purposes. What is a structural purpose?

2. The shipwreck determines the course of the play. [Tell the reader how]
3. It also may be portrayed as dark in nature because of the many deceptions that occur in the play.

Conclusion:
Nonetheless, Twelfth Night is ultimately considered to be a comedy. The misfortunes and disguises that determine the course of the play, also mounts up the humour. This is because they provide commotion and bewilderment amongst the characters which will be deduced as sardonic by the audience.

The actual moral of the play is debatable.

Essays / Compare and contrast essay of The Stand vs. Outbreak [4]

I suggest you use an essay matrix to divy up the parts of the book and film, then you use each cell to write your paragraphs from. A matrix makes it very easy to compare and contrast information.

Note the popular arguments about it
Tell the reader what to expect in the rest of the paper

Tell them what I told them I was going to

three
parts
-writing critically, that is questioning methods and findings or how conclusions were drawn with regards to other literature (opinions).

Write a conclusion: This is what I told you and why

I would only include one quote, if necessary

Writing Feedback / "Faker?" - Somatization Disorder (abnormal psychology essay) [4]

Is it possible to feel physical pain from a psychological disorder with no traceable cause? In the 1980's the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) introduced a category of psychological disorders that included symptoms of physical pain without a reason. Sufferers of Somatization disorder (SD) are not faking their symptoms; in fact their physical pain is real. During the nineties SD was referred to as Briquet's syndrome or simply as hysteria. Neither of these terms is used anymore (Mai, 2004). [Currently, ...per cent of North Americans are diagnosed with a form of SD (cite, date)]

SD is one of six Somatoform disorders known today (Oyama, Paltoo & Greengold, 2007). [You state 6 here but I count 7] This chronic disorder is not preventable, detectable, or curable, but is manageable with help [specifically what kind, e.g., combination of pharmaceutical and cognitive...?] Each of the Somatoform disorders shares a common trait; relative absence of a physical cause and an identifiable psychological cause (Mai, 2004). In many cases persons diagnosed with a Somatoform disorder are accused of "faking" and are seen as attention seeking through acting out. The 6 types of Somatoform diagnoses include:

1. Somatization disorder (multisystem physical symptoms)
2. Undifferentiated somatoform disorder (fewer symptoms than SD)
3. Conversion disorder (voluntary motor or sensory function symptoms)
4. Pain disorder (pain with strong psychological involvement)
5. Hypochondriasis
6. Body dysmorphic disorder (preoccupation with a real or imagined physical
defect)
7. Somatoform disorder not otherwise specified (used when criteria are not
clearly met in other types; American Family Physician, [date]; Oyama, Paltoo
and Greengold, 2007).

Signs and symptoms of Somatization disorder vary from case to case and even within a person across time and settings [?when]. Suffers of the disorder will have numerous unexplained physical symptoms over many years; this would be a noticeable sign to indicate possible Somatoform disorder. Predominant symptoms are headaches and joint pain, though these tend to occur with one or more secondary symptoms, such as chest pain, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea and painful urination (Kelly, 1995).

The disorder normally affects females under the age of 30 with a family history of the disorder or a form of panic disorder. It is diagnosed more frequently in women with a first line family member who suffers from a Somatoform disorder. Since there is no test for SD, physicians have to go by a patient's medical and family history and pay attention to possible symptoms. [These are a given for a doctor, would the doc be taking note of psychological functioning as well?] In order to be diagnosed with Somatization disorder a patient must have at least two gastrointestinal complaints, four pain symptoms, one pseudo-neurologic problem, and one sexual symptom (Oyama, Paltoo and Greengold, 2007).

SD is often confused with factitious disorder and malingering [are these in the DSM? (cite, date)], the difference being that SD does not have anything to do with internal or external gain. American Family Physician (p. ) explains,

In somatoform disorders, there are no obvious gains or
incentives for the patient, and the physical symptoms are
not willfully adopted or feigned; rather, anxiety and fear
facilitate the initiation, exacerbation, and maintenance of these
disorders.

Like many psychological disorders, SD is not as excepted or believed as it should be [by who? Who says?]Somatoform diagnosis remains controversial, there is a lack of clearly defined thresholds [of what?]; use of unreliable subcategories [in the DSM? Informal categories used by doctors?], universal diagnosis is not applicable; exclusion of medical criteria [what does this mean? What is excluded? Who is excluding it? Why are they when above you say that it is what doctors use for diagnosis?], and unacceptable terminology [like what? Why unacceptable? Who is using it? How is this issue different from unreliable subcategories?](Mayou, Kirmayer & Simon, 2005). Thus, this serious disorder is generating much research interest [because you have said that there are numerous conflicting issues] to explain "fake" symptoms.

Essays / Psychology essay- Discuss The Development of Memory in Infancy and Childhood [3]

Use a matrix to write up your notes.

1. Create a table of 6 columns across and 6 down.
2. Label columns across: Author/s, Date, School of Thought, Assumptions on the
topic, Main theory, Method/s of research.
3. List journals down rows, place notes into appropriate cells.
4. You now have a 36 paragraph outline to structure your essay topic. Compare and contrast cells for deeper insight into how and why the theories of explanation differ on the topic.

Differences are a given~ they need not be fundamentally opposed, simply suggesting another direction.

Essays / Help finding topics for a 2-3 page discriptive story [4]

How about writing about a dream you had recently? Or about a goal you would like to achieve? Do you have a favorite movie or fairytale?, then you could re-write the plot to suit your characters.

There are story structures that exist across time and cultures: the heroe's journey (leave safe home, fight dragons, bring back treasure), the prodigal child, the forbidden romance...choose one of these as a base.

Once you write up some characters and settings the paper will be almost half written.

Writing Feedback / need help with fixing my essay, "LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL" response [5]

You need an Introductory senence, something like: Rhetorical strategies are an important method for analysing text.

Then define Rhetorical strategies and let the reader know which one you have chosen and why.

"Throughout "Letter from Birmingham Jail" Martin Luther King Jr. uses the logos rhetorical strategy to persuade his audience. Using reason, facts, evidence and logic for the cause of support. <<[ here my teacher told me this is a sentence fragment]"

This paper will provide a critical discussion of the Logos approach used by Martin Luther King Jr. in his 19... "Letter from Birmingham Jail". [Now give some background to the letter; who was martin, why in jail, his aim in writing the letter].

Start by idientifying his arguments:
Give the background to the clergyman's letter. Show your evidence for King being respectful etc, use quotes. How does he "make it clear"...? Finally, for this paragraph how does his being respectful and making things clear show you that he is using Logos? Remember to cite your sources when talking about what is Logos.

Repeat for next argument.

Write a conclusion: This paper demonstrated ....

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

Essays / uni film essay, how all films are carriers of cultural identity & ideology [8]

he majority of films in all categories are the unconscious instruments of the ideologies, which produce them.

Is this your Introductory sentence? then expand on it. Cite some references as to how and why this conclusion has been drawn. Why does it matter if they are unconscious instruments.

Is this statement a fact or simply just an idea brought forward by certain film theorists and audiences?

Who are these certain film theorists and audiences? What are they saying~ show the reader the evidence from which you are drawing your conclusions. Why does it matter if the statement is fact or opinion?

At the end of your first paragraph would be a good time to let the reader know what they are going to read later in the essay. e.g., This paper will critically discuss ...[what?].... to demonstrate that all films .... First, .... will be presented Second,... will be highlighted. Next, ... will be noted. Finally, a conclusion shall synthesise the main points of this paper and illistrate the importance of this critical discussion to ....[field of study/community issue].

Your Introduction for a 3000 word essay needs to be at least one page, or 250w; your Conclusion will be about this length as well. That leaves 2500 words for the body. Divide the body into themes~e.g., Historical epochs (833 w), Cross-cultural research (833 w), and Specific directors/playwrights (833 w).

I would not worry about plagerism in this case. What I see is a first draft, if you follow the formula I have given, and use the insights others have shared here you will end up with an oringial document that is differnt in many ways to this draft.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

Remember to cite your sources!

Writing Feedback / "rules of the game" in society - essay, opinions [7]

This is a great first draft :-) However, I think you could enhance this piece~

Are you meant to write in First person? Normally academic writing is in Third Person.

You need to go over the grammar.

You have no citations/referencing; e.g., "There are certain norms that every man is supposed to follow as a citizen".

Just to note, using "man" is not 21st century academic speak, human/person/man, woman and child etc.

Some sentences are just stuck in there~ they need to be expanded on. e.g., "Yes, there are ones."

You need an introduction and conclusion.

Let me know how it goes.

Book Reports / Oedipus Rex & Antigone- essay *need help with thesis* [7]

I would google the names and read reviews of how others interpret the text. As I read I would cut and paste my notes directly to a Word doc, and make the font "purple". I would (cite, date) as I went along, also pasting the reference onto a reference list.

How many words is the paper?

You will want an Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Intro and conclusion would be roughly the same length (e.g., 1 page each for a 5-8 page essay).

Now that my info is placed where I think it best goes in the essay I re-wrtie what is in purple font and cite and date where necessary. Whilst re-writing I am thinking about theories/models brought up in lectures/tutes and choose at least one of these to justify my conclusions.

Let me know how you go, or if I cna help out more~ Char
