Scholarship / My potential contribution towards Mozambique development - Commonwealth Scholarship [2]

Hi, I would appreciate any help to make essay stronger. Thanks in advance.

Statement for Commonwealth Scholarship

In Mozambique, about half of rural population live without safe water, therefore the population resort to rivers and peccary traditional water wells where they became susceptible to get malaria, diarrhea and cholera (major causes of children deaths). Groundwater exploration is considered the most sustainable alternative for water supply in rural zones and Geophysics is one of the tools that make this solution possible through location of aquifers for construction of boreholes.

The need for more qualified national geophysicists is getting higher as new discoveries of natural resources are expected and the effects of climate change tend to worsen leading to intensification of geohazards. Completing this intense programme will allow me to bring more quality to the sector and contribute for reducing the impact of these challenges.

Geophysics can be related to Science and technology for development as the increasing developments in instrumentation, technology and interpretation techniques allows it to indirectly map physical parameters to solve complex geological tasks such as find aquifers, understand the causes and effects of natural hazards and discover new hydrocarbon reservoirs. These accomplishments contribute to economic development and reduce poverty.

During my studies I will learn different geophysical methods and create diversified contacts. After returning home, I will use the help of my contacts and my relationship with Commonwealth Scholarship and DFID to create partnerships with the company I am currently working to be part of the DFID project to ameliorate the rural water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) service delivery in the water component conducting more accurate hydrogeological studies, monitoring boreholes and modelling the spread of contaminants. With the success of the water component, we will reduce child deaths caused by WASH absence and time spent to fetch water (mainly by women and girls) thus allowing them to dedicate time for other activities (study as example). The measure parameter will be the number of deaths caused by water-related diseases and number of girls in schools.

Later I will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the oil and gas industry processing and interpreting reservoirs data and reducing the exploration risk by decoding information of the rocks and fluids, therefore, contributing to exploit our resources. In three years, my determination, skills, achievements and strengthened relations will give me the chance to progress to a senior role in management. The success of hydrocarbon exploration will enable economic development, encourage investments and support our industrialization. The measure parameter will be more job creation and more fuel available to generate electricity.

The DFID is supporting programs to undertake Humanitarian and Climate and Environment challenges in Mozambique. As a long-term plan, I will create a geophysical company to offer services in natural resources exploitation and use geophysical and modelling techniques to identify causes and effects of natural hazards contributing to their risk assessment and monitoring, helping the government to strengthen hazards policies and the capacity to respond to emergency situations. In environmental sector, we will work with problems related with collapses and develop plans to reduce and evaluate the impact of contaminants.

Scholarship / Good leaders are trailblazers, who make a path for others to others to follow; Chevening scholarship [3]

You are presenting your essay in a normal approach (people that have fear to start then you convince) with some influence skills but with lack on leadership. You have to present a challenging situation in which you used leadership and influence skills to solve it. Perhaps you should pick the most difficult case of these 10 and explain how you managed to lead and influence him. What was is startup? Why he was afraid? how you convinced him to listen to you? how you adapted your approach to met his particular situation? how you convinced him to follow you? you had to organize external resources?

Good Luck

Scholarship / Leaders must be active and able to influence the people around them - Chevening essay [6]

This is the new essay taking into consideration your suggestions.

Chevening Leadership & Influence essay

I started my career as ...

In September 2018, I was working in Gilé district, Zambezia Province in the Centre of Mozambique to carry out geophysical surveys for construction of 10 boreholes for water supply. There was a remote community called Mpariwa where the inhabitants had to walk 9km to fetch water on a river. The community was located 9 km from a precarious road and I could not get there to survey not even the drilling machine and the district government did not had funds to pay a contractor to open the road.

Imagining their difficulties and seeing it being eliminated from the beneficiary list, I proposed that we should find a way to open a road to get there. Many solutions were suggested by the actors involved (the community, my team and the locality chief) such as ask the district government to divert part of its budget to pay a contractor, force the small X Company that is exploring woods to open the road, mobilize the community to open the roads and others.

After assessing the situation, I combined some of the suggested solutions to form a cooperation in which we divided tasks. The locality chief said that he would provide machetes, rakes and axes, my team has vouched to analyse the geological environment to plan the road route and the community had to endeavour to open the road. We contacted the X Company and they undertook to cut down the big trees.

Some of the community inhabitants were saying that they would not open the road because they were afraid of doing the job and don't see the borehole. To show my commitment to the cause and get their allegiance, I drove to a safe spot and walked the remaining 8 km. Then I explained that besides the drilling machine that would use the road, the road would allow more visitors, more money circulation and the ambulance would arrive there instead of taking the patient to the ambulance. They agreed and with the community leader, we set up groups for cut small trunks, level the road, transport stones to close holes and for cook. After all, the road was good enough for cars transit and we could get to the community, survey the area for potential aquifers, drill the borehole and give water to the community

As integrant of the huge Chevening community, I will experience perspectives from different corners of the world, learn different leadership styles and consolidate my influencer skills to help me in the decision making process and get the best from my team and partners.

Scholarship / Studying in UK Chevening Essay - Opportunity to Learn the Business from its Best Practice [4]

Hi Shaniqua. I think you should eliminate the 2nd paragraph because it sounds like a repetition in the subsequent paragraphs or you can use these explanations in the respective university paragraph.

Your universities paragraphs shows that you surveyed about your courses and you know why you want what you want. The missing point in your essay is explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience. You have to show that you have a solid background that will support you in your chosen courses. Good Luck.

Scholarship / Networking is like a car engine - Chevening [4]

Ninin, it seems that you have very good and meaningful contacts but you are not using them properly. This essay is not about show of your contacts but it is about presenting how you used these contacts to solve a situation. The case about ABC financial regulation does not count as you contacted your supervisor to deal with it. I am sure that during your career you have faced many challenges , so choose one of them that better show how you used your network to overcome the situation. You also have to say in which aspects or how cheveners will use your contacts. Wish you the best. Good luck

Scholarship / After finish my master course I plan to get a job in a governmental and/or oil and gas company [9]

Hi, due to essayforum policy, I can only re-open the thread of 2018/2019 and continue posting. This is my Career plan essay for 2019/2020. Pease help me to make it more competitive. Thanks in advance

CAREER PLAN ESSAY FOR 2019/2020

The increasing developments in instrumentation, technology and interpretation techniques allow geophysics to indirectly map physical parameters to solve complex geological tasks. During my master, I will evolve and be able to help my country in challenging sectors that concur with DFID priorities.

For 2018/19, DFID plans to spend 53% of its planned budget for Mozambique to Human Development Sector and support the transformation of rural water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) service delivery is the second priority of DFID in Mozambique. The WASH programme will contribute to reduce child deaths caused by WASH absence, under-nutrition and the sacrifice people do to get water. After returning home, I will continue at HMR or secure job in another consultant to contribute for the success of the WASH project in water component, conducting hydrogeological studies, monitoring boreholes, making more accurate surveys in order to reduce the probability of negative boreholes and modelling the spread of aquifers.

One of the examples of UK support for Mozambique's development, is the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on 15 February 2018 between Aberdeen City and City of Pemba to use Scottish expertise in the Oil and Gas sector to transform Mozambique focused on cooperation and trade development. As a chevener geophysicist, I will use the MoU to secure a job in the Oil and Gas sector, collaborate and implement programmes to exploit Mozambique's untapped resources as part of economic diversification. In a few years, my determination, skills and achievements will give me the chance to progress to a senior role in management and networking opportunities.

Many geophysical companies in Mozambique offer services related to natural resources. Thus, as a long-term plan, I intend to create a geophysical company not only focused on natural resources but also in environmental and hazards (floods, earthquake, and others) sectors. The DFID is supporting programs to undertake Humanitarian and Climate and Environment challenges (18% and 2% of 2018/19 DFID budget for Mozambique is directed to these sectors respectively).

To help Mozambique and DFID to tackle these challenges, for instance, the company will use geophysical techniques to identify hydrogeological characteristics that influence flood parameters. These results can be used with modelling techniques to identify causes and effects of flooding making possible their risk assessment and monitoring, helping the government to strengthen hazards policies and the capacity to respond to emergency situations. In environmental sector, the company will work with problems related with karst collapse, mine subsidence, detect buried waste, determine the source and level of pollutants and develop plans to reduce and evaluate the impact of contaminants.

The company will also make MoUs with universities to accept interns and create programs to develop fairs in schools to awake pupils love for science. After my PhD, we will make partnerships with universities and other institutions to develop a research division and contribute to science development. I am quite sure that Chevening will give me the necessary tools to start this journey to realize my plans and contribute to the Millennium Development Goals.

Hi, due to essayforum policy, I can only re-open the thread of 2018/2019 and continue posting. This is my Networkingessay for 2019/2020. Pease help me to make it more competitive. Thanks in advance. It needs to be Urgent for a new review too.

###

To obtain my internship and finish my bachelor, the university wrote a recommendation letter for me addressed to the National Directorate of Water (DNA). In this contact, I met Eng. X, a project manager with more than 30 years of experience who introduced me to company where I had my internship, which is where I currently work (HMR). Fortunately, I had the opportunity to work with him on four projects and we always maintained contacts to exchange information about the work progress and life situations.

When I was working in Muidumbe District, I shared experiences with Eng. Y whom I met in the birthday dinner of the district Administrator. A week later, he called me to introduce me his friend who wanted an industrial borehole to use the water for irrigation as well as for building the facilities of his company. He wanted me to help him to obtain the authorization from Regional Administration of Water in the North (ARA-Norte) to drill the borehole. I called Eng. X and he gave me the contact of one of the ARA-Norte water resources technician who explained me the requirements (one of the requirements was to carry out a geophysical survey). I assisted him on the preparation and submission of the application that led to the authorization to drill the borehole.

In October 2017, one of my ex senior geophysicists at HMR whose currently working at Schlumberger, invited me to be a member of social media group of geophysicists and geologists mostly specialized in hydric resources. The group was created to exchange experiences lived in different places, tips and opportunities related to our fields and other areas. HMR is one of the leading consultants in water supply sector, due to this, I have travelled in all Mozambican provinces making hydrogeological studies and building relationships. The major part of the members have a good feeling about me because I am a very active member as I always have experiences to share.

In September 2018, I was sent to the District of Ile to find points to drill boreholes for water supply. It was my first time there, the data I collected was different from everything I had seen and I was having a weak performance. I decided to seek for help in the group and two geophysicists (one from Gondwana Empreendimentos e Consultorias, Lda and another from HidroGeo, Lda) that already worked in this district told me that the data I was collecting was normal and they gave me tips to overcome the situation. Using their tips and analysing previous reports, I could successful complete the surveys that resulted in positive boreholes.

The nature of my profession requires me to have an adventurous spirit, travel for different places and build relationships based on mutual generosity. I am quite sure that the Chevening community can use these contacts in hydrogeological field and others. As a chevener, I will interact with this enormous community creating partnerships to help me explore the untapped resources of Mozambique.

Scholarship / Leaders must be active and able to influence the people around them - Chevening essay [6]

Hello, please give me suggestions and advices to make my essay more competitive. Thanks in advance.

my influencing skills

I started my career as a geophysicist in 2015 and since 2016, due to my leadership, interpersonal, detail-oriented and management skills strengthened when I was a teacher and observing the company leaders, I was entrusted the position of team leader in 96% of the projects I am involved in. As a team leader I have to make myself available to talk about office issues, plan geophysical surveys and borehole construction and coordinate with institutions.

In Zambézia District, I worked in a remote community called Mpariwa, where the inhabitants had to walk 9 km to a river to find water. As the last 8 km to the community were not accessible by car, we could not get there. To solve this problem, I began by identifying the actors involved (the community, my team, the drilling team, the community leader and the locality chief). The general problem statement was "How to arrive to Mpariwa, without damaging the vehicles". To show my commitment to the cause and get their allegiance, I drove to a safe spot and walked the remaining 8 km. I delegated to the locality chief the task of seeking funds to buy machetes, rakes and axes to ameliorate the road. With the community leader, we set up groups for cut the trees, collect the trees, remove the roots, level the road, transport stones to close holes and for cook. After all, the road was good enough for cars transit and we could get to the community, survey the area for potential aquifers, drill the borehole and give water to the community.

Leaders in an organization are often responsible for influence co-workers to adopt new behaviours, methodologies and strategies through example, training, workshops in order to enhance the quality and maintain competitiveness. In 2017 I felt the need to change the way we present boreholes' data and I decided to research for tools that could do that. When I shared the software with my workmates in February 2018, they were apathy with the suggestions and to inspire them to embrace my vision, I decided to make a workshop entitled "Tools used for 3D visualization of boreholes' data". In the workshop, with enthusiasm, I showed a draft of a report and explained how this new form to present data would elevate the professionalism of our reports. Then I explained the steps to use these tools to visualize the data contained in the report. At the end of the workshop, they were excited to create new models and they even suggested how we could improve the new report. With ebullience we produced the final report and the client approved it without reservation.

As integrant of the huge Chevening community, I will experience perspectives from different corners of the world, gain the ability to deal with different people, learn different leadership styles and consolidate my influencer skills to help me in the decision making process and get the best from my team and partners. Thus, I will contribute for Geophysics development in Mozambique.

Scholarship / "young entrepreneurs" - for 'Career plan' essay for Chevening Scholarship [5]

Hi@thithinwe

In the 2nd paragraph you can modify your first sentence. You dont have to start with "I would like describe", it sounds very passive. Instead, you could start with something like "To pursue my career after completing my studies, I developed a 5 years short term plan". In the 2nd sentence you start with "At year three". Isn't year two?

It is clear in your essay that you admire France shoes heritage, for me, it sounds like you really want to study in France instead of UK. Find a way to talk about France but Keeping clear that UK is were you really want to study.

And the most important thing is the lack on relating UK and your field of work. Find a way to relate why UK would support a business to produce shoes.

Scholarship / Marketing myself and demonstrating suitability in my Personal Statement [3]

Hi, am applying for a Scholarship in a UK University and I need to market myself. I look forward to suggestions and corrections.

The Personal Statement should be between 250-500 words and answer:
1.Why have you chosen to apply to the University of XXX to study this subject?
2.Which personal qualities do you possess that will help you to successfully complete this programme of study?
3.How will studying this programme help you when you return home and in your future career?

self presentation essay

Listening to my mother mumbling when the gas bottle ran out while she was cooking and listening to people talking about Mozambique tremendous potential in natural resources aroused my interest in developing skills related to their exploration. Doing my bachelor in Physics, I understood that I wanted to be a modern geophysicist with solid fundamentals, field experience and skills in quantitative analyses and interpretation of geophysical data. Surveying for UK Universities, I perceived that XXX could be a home for my interests in addition of being in a safe and affordable city. When I found that YYY the author of articles about seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers was one of XXX's experts, my desire to be part of XXX were amplified.

At university, when professors asked questions that the class didn't know the answer, I was in some cases capable to answer or contribute to it, thanks to my proactive and autodidact spirit. I was Assistant Coordinator of a group created to take Astronomy out of the classroom. I headed the group in the International Asteroid Search Campaign cataloguing unknown asteroids and in the expositions were I established strong relationships. While studying, I got a job as a teacher were I developed my interpersonal, management and communication skills that helped me to be persuasive in the class, seminars and in daily situations.

In March 2015, I got an internship at a consultancy and three months later, they offered me a full-time job as a geophysicist and according to the director it was due to the computer skills, flexibility and potential seen in me. Since then, I've been working as a geophysicist travelling around Mozambique collecting, analysing and interpreting data. In 2016 I had my biggest challenge when I was assigned the task to lead the field teams in the construction of 300 boreholes for water supply. By becoming available to discuss about professional and personal issues and with my spirit naturally optimistic, my passion for challenge and the support of my network, I could successfully manage the teams.

By studying Geophysics in this global hub, I'll constantly develop familiarity with international standards, strong cross-cultural communications, different leadership styles and interpersonal skills, what will give me better chances to secure a job in Mozambique, were I will progress to a senior role in management. With my experience, contacts and skills developed, I'll make partnerships to create a geophysical company. We'll offer a diverse range of services, cooperate with the government in the better regularization of natural resources sector in order to allow natural resources revenues and make agreements with Universities to accept internships.

This programme will be very intense and challenging but my journey as a student, assistant coordinator, teacher and geophysicist taught me to meet deadlines and take initiative on personal and professional development. Am sure that XXX will wide my perspectives and give me bases to cooperate with the government in challenging situations, continue to grow and contribute for prosperity of my country as a geophysicist.

Scholarship / The three courses that will led me forward as a professional - Studying in the UK Question [2]

Hi. Please comment on my essay to improve it.

Studying in the UK Question

For a Bachelor in Physics like me, UK It is a dream land considered the cradle of the Industrial Revolution where many renowned physicians studied and/or worked. Besides that, the UK postgraduate programs are shorter than in many countries, which means more challenge, intensity and a minimum time away from home what is good because I will start soon to implement what I will learn.

Geophysics course from University of Aberdeen sited in an affordable city for students is my first choice for the scholarship. My geophysics theoretical background acquired in Introduction to Geophysics optional class in which my bachelor work was related gave me a start point to this course taught by experienced equips that provide modern theory and practice knowledge to students. In addition, the course use core analyses and well logs to monitor reservoirs, something I always wanted to learn. My journey as a geophysicist taught me to be proactive and take initiative on personal and professional development what is good because this course will entail a lot from these skills. After the course completion, I will make quantitative analyses and interpretation of geophysical data, develop my professional career in natural resources survey, environmental assessment and research.

The second choice is Exploration Geophysics course from University of Leeds. This course is computer-intensive what is good for me because I have IT bases and when I was making my Bachelor I had experience with Linux, MATLAB, JAVA and FORTRAN. The course is what I was searching for my career because it will give me resources to study Earth interior analysing geophysical methods very focused in both theory and practice. Using the knowledge and acquired experience in the course I will analyse and develop geophysical software, modelling, processing and making interpretation of geophysical data increasing my chances to secure a job in the government and/or private company.

Lastly but not less important is Structural Geology with Geophysics, a course also from University of Leeds that will prepare me to apply geophysical measurements to solve geological problems. Fundamentals in Mathematics, in seismic and adventurous spirit developed travelling in all provinces of Mozambique are part of my background to pursue this course. One of the skills most required by hydrocarbon and mining industry is to understand seismic interpretation, structural evolution and geological contexts, geological model construction which means that I will be qualified because this course cover these areas with high quality.

All three courses receive visits from industry representative providing networking and development occasions through meetings, case studies and other. As a geophysicist with hands-on experience in electrical resistivity methods, I want to develop skills in other geophysical methods and these three courses will wide my perspectives and give me bases to cooperate with the government in challenging situations allowing me to continue to grow and contribute for prosperity of the country as a geophysicist.

Scholarship / Chevening_Leadership experience gained from emergent events is often the most precious. [6]

@Pharm2916
Your essay is good in the leadership aspect but have some gaps for example when you talk about the internship at USC you don't explain how you used your position as a group leader to lead your team. It happens again in Taiwan International Science Fair. Explain how you leaded the group.

The prompt asks not only for example of leadership (i used to do the same mistake) but of influence skills too. I suggest you to add examples of how you used your influence skills in a particular situation. Good Luck...

Scholarship / Conquer the access to untapped resources by connecting with people. Chevening Network Question [6]

Hi. Here is my network essay for Chevening scholarship. I appreciate any help in the structure, coherence and grammar corrections.

networking for identifying problems and finding solutions

Networking is about connecting with people, identifying with them in a way that allow us to influence and get mutual benefices. In many situations I used information and resources from my diversified relationships to identify problems and find potential solutions.

When I was a teacher, I used the wisdom of a group of teachers in which I was inserted to show my willingness to know my students from their parents, listening carefully to validate their values and show respect and asking the right questions focusing in a positive language. One day a parent told me how gloomy he was seeing bad results of his son in mathematics and thanks to that wisdom I answered that his son was resolute and had good marks in other subjects, then I asked if he could help me in an activity to help his son and at the end we overcome it. With this and other approaches, I engaged the parents and influenced them to take initiative on learning. Today I maintain contact with other teachers and parents through social media to exchange ideas that enhance learning.

Since 2015 working as geophysicist searching for possible aquifers for water supply, I had the opportunity to travel in all provinces of my country, see and experience its cultural diversity. Understanding that people are different from each other, that organizations are not equal, that position is not always proportional to influence and that meaningful connections don't happen suddenly, led me to be proactive, start conversations, be inclusive and don't think that everybody behaves the same as me or think that it is all about me. My diversified contacts are vital in some of my work tasks when I am on the field. For example, when I need to buy something to fix the cars or tools for geophysics, I always have access to the right places to do it and ways to get it.

At Mopeia (a district of Zambezia) when I was making Vertical Electrical Soundings for construction of 20 boreholes, I had to use my network skills to help someone out of my professional area who wanted to bring to life his project related with good agricultural practices. He explained to me that the idea was to help his village ameliorating food production. I gave him bases to write his project and contacted some people that I met when I was working at Machanga (a district of Sofala) who implemented a similar project to help him. The project came to life, was well accepted in his village and helped him gain new perspectives and grow professionally.

In the future, as a Chevening awardee I will have the opportunity to learn and collaborate with the brighter brains of UK industry and have the chance to join to the Chevening community and alumni. As part of these communities, I will share my perspectives and experiences, lead myself and others, set new goals and contribute to the development of geophysics in my home country.
