UK and Indonesia are both maritime nations. In 2016, our president, Jokowi, would like more cooperation between UK and Indonesia that concerned on capacity in port management. And also in 2015 UK already has a co-operation with Ministry of Marine and Fisheries. My master study would be focused on that area and I will implemented my knowledge and network in Indonesia after my master study by continue to run the family company and improve it based on what I got from Chevening, either it is ideas and knowledge or even networks. Strong network I get from Chevening would be beneficial for my career and my country's coastal development.

Indonesia has a high fluctuation of tide so floating infrastructures for coastal would be best option. I have an intention to improve it and applied it in Indonesia's coastal just like what my company do by now. Infrastructures are usually need high cost and complex maintenance, but it would be pressed by applying floating infrastructure. Currently my company concerned in designing floating dock and breakwater. And in the future, the technology would be enhanced and more effective in terms of its maintenance and design by applying what I receive from my master study in a great maritime country which is UK.

In addition, I will join a government ministry or government research body to work as researcher and also lecturer. Those career would be both benefit for each other-either it is private sector (my family company) or the government. It would also produce positive result for both UK and Indonesia cooperation in terms of maritime and port infrastructures.

NETWORKING ESSAY FOR CHEVENING

Joining an intership at the Ministry of Marine of Fisheries Republic of Indonesia in my 3rd year of university was my first experience of meeting influental people in my major, Oceanography. I worked with researchers from Indonesia and Chinese. Besides, I also met new people from TNI AU. Having connection with them broadening my insight about application of ocenaography in my country and how was the real condition of Indonesia's marine which is undeveloped well and has complex problems, especially in coastal. This experience motivated me to dedicate my life in marine area. Futhermore, I was benefitted from the network here during my last year because they can help me to solve problems on my thesis and offered me jobs after I graduated. In addition, on my 4th year of univeRsity while I am doing my thesis, I've met several researcher from LIPI and P3GL to asked about problems on my thesis.

After graduated from university, I started to work in a company which concerned in coastal protection. Even it belong to my father, I met new people from different background for sure. Moreover, our clients are from all around Indonesia who has industry related to coastal development. I realized from those clients, that there are much Indonesia's coastal problem which need to be solved and developed especially in terms of its infrastructure.

Currently I as a representative from the company, joined a bussiness and digital marketing group. In this opportunity, I also benefited from entrepreneurs with different background. Even this group is not related to my study and career, but this opportunity is necessary to wider the business in this digital era, including a business in coastal infrastructure company.

Being a part of Chevening absolutely will strengthen my network globally. Lack of industries that concern in coastal development and engineering in Indonesia makes this global network I get from Chevening helpful for both Indonesia or UK.

Study Plan for Chevening Essay

My last major in Physical Oceanography and my latest work in a coastal protection company inspired me to take advanced studies in more applicative and specific area which is coastal engineering. Moreover, my personal motivation is I was growing up in an archipelagic country with 54,716 kilometers of coastal length. It is irritating that on the other side, this potential is still undeveloped well. Several disasters are often occured in the coastal. For example: erosion in the north Java (Indramayu, Cirebon), flood and water intrusion in Jakarta, or natural damage in Indonesia's most coastals. In my current work in X which now handle some of coastal protection in Batam Island and flood protection in Jakarta, I realize that we needs some professionals who can solve problems, design, and integrate knowledge and skills to develop its huge potential of coastal and marines.

I found that UK is a great maritime country, including it's coastal management. So, United Kingdom is the right place to learn about coastal environment and engineering and also to boarden my network globally. In addition, I have a plan to be a lecturer and also to run a business in this area, which is X. That was the foundation of my decision of taking master degree in the UK.

I choose to study at University of Southampton because they have collaboration with National Oceanography Centre Southampton that allowed students work alongside researchers and academics who are world leaders in their field. Due to the collaboration, University of Southampton become part of the largest Earth and Marine science community in Europe. This advance can strengthen my network and opportunities. My first option is Engineering in the Coastal Environment and my second choice is Marine Engineering. Both programmes provided courses I need.

My last choice is Master of Coastal Engineering at Plymouth University. The university located near coastal and has excellent facilities including laboratory for coastal engineering. Besides, they has internationally-recognise research group.The courses they provide is also fit my needs.

Both universities are advance in coastal engineering area, and I believe that knowledge and connection I got can enhance my future career as a businessman in my father's coastal protection company, which is where I work now.

Leadership and Influence Essay for Chevening

I believe that someone can not be a strong leader in sudden. There must be a lot of learning-despite it is from classes, books, people, or even experiences. What is necessary of being a true leader is not only having ability to manage and influence others, but also having clear goals, setting strategies, and becoming a learner in every second of their life. Below I am going to explain several experiences of mine that proving my leadership and influence skills.

Being elected as Head of Journalistic Extracurricular when I was 14 was my first experience to run an organization and manage some goals and events with approximately 15 members. That was not as easy as I thought before, sometimes some of our targets were delayed or even neglected, but this first experience and some failures taught me lot of leadership skills.

In 2014 I was selected as an Editor in Chief and leader in our Ocaenography Student's Association Magazine team namely X. My responsibility was started from deciding a theme, selected some members and contributors, creating the contents, producing the magazines, until distributing it. It was quite difficult to manage our team's time to meeting or work in our agendas due to we had different class and activities. I realized that what I have to do first was make a chemistry between I and my members, I started it from having lunch together with them. I also believe that good communication will enhance our togetherness in this team and help us to reach our goals that we had discussed in the first place.

After making this team solid, ideas and innovations were necessary to enhance and develop the magazine. As a result, we do some changes in this magazine but the two most influential changes were it's name (from Y Magazine turning into X Magazine), and there were some alumnae who buy the magazine with a high price (our magazine was not for sale, we distribute it freely only to Marine Student Association all around my country and some institution related to this field.). In the end we're not only satisfied by making our goals come true, but also we got profits which we never expected before.

Currently I am working on my father's company named X which now focused on coastal protection. This time, he teach me how to handle a business and how to always learn and broaden my knowledge especially in terms of coastal engineering. From all those experiences, I believe that a great leader is someone who has a good interpersonal skills, respect others, and always able to learn. And now I am on my way to prepare for that.

Data Analyst
This company is run by my father and concentrated in making coastal protection such as breakwater, port, flood protection, or even bridge - which is related to my previous study. Since October 2016, I started to work here as a data analyst.

Volunteer Teacher
In 2014, I started to join ABC Study Centre as a volunteer teacher for Elementary and Junior High School student. I teach Natural Science and Mathematics every Saturday. The purpose of this program is to help the students pass their National Exam so that they can continue their study in school they're wishing for. Once every month, we examine them by giving try out so that we know their weakness in every subject they learn.

Lecturer's Assistant
When I was in my 3rd and 4th year in college I was a lecturer's Assistant for 3 different courses which are X,Y, and Z. I had responsibilities to substitute the lecturer if they couldn't attend the class, to make modules every week and teach students in practicum class, and to help students if they have difficulties in those courses. In addition, I also had to score their practicum score and report to the lecturer about their progress in practicum class every week in a meeting.

Researcher in A Cruise
These 18 days of cruise called X. I and approximately 15 members of Indonesian's researcher and 8 Chinese's researcher worked together on a research vessel namely Y to get some oceanography and meteorology data, and to deploy moorings in A and B. Those data would be important for our thesis and research in the future.

I had responsibilities to make sure the Physical Oceanography data such as sub-surface temperature, density, and salinity, completed and written in all the stations we've discussed before. Besides, we also had to write and check the meteorology data like the speed of wind, humidity, and precipitation in all the way we passed every hour and every day.

Editor In Chief
The magazine was created under Student Association and in 2015 until 2016, my main duties as Editor in Chief was to manage the making of the 4th edition of The Magazine from its theme, concept, until the distribution of the magazines. I also arranged meetings with 10-20 contributors to discuss the magazine.

Treasurer
Besides hired as lecturer's assistant, I was also a treasurer in Z Excursion in W Island. My responsibilities started from financial planning, cash management, and oversee the budget from Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering.
