Undergraduate / C for BIOLOGY; George Washingon / Risk I took,failed & what I learned [4]

Prompt: "Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." - Winston Churchill. Tell us about a time you took a risk, failed, and were able to pick up the pieces and learn from the experience.

Slam! The paper was thrown on my desk. I took a good five minutes to turn the paper over and take a look at what dreadful grade was circled in red ink on that paper. To my shock, it was a big, fat "C" circled on the test. Just then, the bell rang and as I gathered my books to head out to my next class, I promised myself that this grade was going to change. I would do whatever it took to maintain myself.

I had happily went into the Guidance Counselor's office earlier this year and signed up to take AP Biology. Biology was my favorite subject in the ninth grade and I knew that I would excel in it. I had also attended the informational meeting held by the AP Biology teacher and was psyched for the upcoming year. "Next year will be great!" I thought to myself. During the summer, I checked out a couple of biology books from my local library and read additional pamphlets to prepare myself for the class. The summer had quickly come to an end and I was ready to get back into action for my last year at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science.

The first day of school was off to a great start and I was determined to do my best in each of my classes. Later that same day, I went into AP Biology thinking that I could do anything I wanted just because I felt that I had pretty good background knowledge of biology. My attitude was positive and I was ready to conquer anything that I wanted to. Little did I know that this situation would put me in a lot of hardship.

The class had initially started out very well and I understood everything that my teacher was teaching us. The labs and other supplemental work actually gave me the more kinesthetic approach to biology. Thus, one month of school passed by and out first AP Biology test was announced. Throughout the first month, I had studied occasionally and tried to understand everything on my own from my AP Biology book. So far, the class seemed relatively easy and it was one of my favorites. This class was a self-paced class and it was the first time that I had taken anything like that.

It was time for the first test of the year and I thought I had studied enough and was prepared for it. However, when the test came back, I learned that I had not been fully prepared for it and there was a lot more that I could do to better prepare myself. When the test came back the next week, my heart sank. Every answer that I thought was the correct one turned out to be the wrong one. I knew that I had wanted to challenge myself, so I silently walked out of the room and I went to my fourth period class trying to make sense of what I had done wrong. That night, I went home and studied all of the material over again. While I did that, I also made a schedule for my study time for AP Biology separate from all my other classes. As I reread the material, I realized that this material had to be continuously read in order for it be comprehended thoroughly.

My second test for was two weeks away and I started to review right away. I also learned to use the class labs and other aids to help me envision the intricate workings of biology. In addition to that, I had started to see myself beginning to create my own explanations for the material. By staying on task and keeping up with a steady schedule, I was able to make it the second time around. I had done better the second time around, but I knew that there was still much more to be conquered.

From then on, I kept up the same studying schedule and work ethic in class. On the third test, I felt prepared and I knew that I had done a good job. When the scores came back, my teacher ecstatically came up to me and told me, "You got the highest grade on the test!" Right then, I knew that I could achieve anything that I wished to do as long as I whole-heartedly put the effort into it.

There is enormous power in failure, especially when one learns from it. Many young adults are afraid of failure and its effects on their lives. However, failure and success go hand-in-hand because both are the greatest lessons of life. At times, I did feel very hopeless but that did not stop me from figuring out what I wanted to learn from this failure. In fact, it made me more determined to change the way I approached this class. In the future, there will be many instances where I will fail and in order for me to succeed, I will have to learn from those experiences and be able to apply it to my future. Thus, failure's lesson is: remain humble, and when you think you've worked hard enough, keep working.

Undergraduate / I am excited to expand my horizon ; George Washington University [2]

"Bleeding edge"- I was thinking maybe you can use a word more like cutting edge instead.
"Whenever I spoke to a student I could tell how much they adored their school, and when I had the opportunity to stay with a student on campus I was excited to go and glad that I did."

Correction: Whenever I spoke to a student, I could tell how much they adored their school, and when I had the opportunity to stay with a student on campus I was excited to go and was glad that I did.

Undergraduate / Why I chose Public Health and Biology - Johns Hopkins SUpplement [2]

Johns Hopkins offers 50 majors across the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. On this application, we ask you to identify one or two that you might like to pursue here. Why did you choose the way you did? If you are undecided, why didn't you choose?

(Please correct grammar and sentence structure!)
Public health is a major that allows one to understand the diseases that plague humans everyday on this earth and how public health administrators work to confine these illnesses. The main goal of public health is to promote and protect the general welfare of the human population. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has a great partnership with third-world countries and works to find the underlying causes of dangerous illnesses.

The study of public health appeals to my desire to later pursue a career in Health Services Administration and then later on becoming a physician. In addition to this, I would like to engage in cutting edge research that helps explore new drugs and be able to contribute to the expanding field of health policy. The study of public health appeals to my desire to later pursue a career in Health Services Administration and then later on becoming a physician. This major will not only serve as a solid foundation for my future studies, but will interest me with concepts of the use of epidemiology and community welfare to my career as a physician. .

I want to focus on learning how to run health promotion programs in a community setting while providing the best health care to my patients. By using my prior knowledge from my Health Science magnet and internship at University of Maryland Medical Center, I will be able to continue supplementing my education at Johns Hopkins. By being a part of this institution, I can learn biostatistics and environmental health. I can also receive training on program planning and health promotion activities to engage patients and community members.

Biology is another major that has infatuated me ever since I was a young kid. It all started one day, in second grade when I was given a peony seed from my teacher and told to grow it. I took it home and the plant grew, but wilted very soon after it started to grow. After that, I bought two more plants and successfully grew them. I even created my own experiment by placing them in different temperatures. After this experiment, I engaged in testing my own water samples from around my neighborhood and other grocery stores because I was challenged by my uncle who said NestlĂŠŽ water is the most clean. I asked my father, who worked in a medical laboratory, to bring me agar gel plates so I could test the water for the amount of bacteria. Turns out, tap water was the most clean and I won fifty dollars after completing that fiasco.

Biology is the science of life and includes a wide range of subjects such as: anatomy, ecology, genetics, immunology, and microbiology. Each year, science and technology are becoming more important in today's global society. Many of the most significant economic, environmental, medical, and social problems in today's world have biological aspects to them. Biologists will be key contributors to solving these problems and providing alternatives to making

Undergraduate / Duquesne essay- Pharmacy program and why I want to be a part of it [3]

Please discuss the following: Tell us something unique about you, why you chose your particular major, and how you expect Duquesne University to help you achieve your academic, personal and professional goals. Please include any examples of your research, shadowing or volunteer experiences.

*** I would like feedback (grammar, re-wording, and whether I do what prompt says or not) Thanks!

I have a set of moral values that I follow all the time. Why? These morals are framed and hung on my wall, all thanks to my wonderful parents. I can speak four languages fluently: English, Urdu, Punjabi, and Arabic. This talent was extremely useful when I volunteered at University of Maryland Medical Center. While volunteering there, I passed by a room where a patient was shouting in Urdu and no one was there with her to help translate what she was saying to the doctor. No other doctor or nurse on the floor could understand what the patient was trying to convey to them. I stopped and peered into the room and asked if I could help. The patient then started to speak to me and was extremely grateful that I came in time to help her. I translated all of her needs to the doctor and was thanked for it. I felt accomplished because this little talent helped someone in need of it. In addition to speaking four languages, I write my own quotes and poems. This type of writing is spiritual and fulfilling and keeps me grounded to my morals.

Duquesne University gives my goals a new meaning, and studying at this university gets me passionate about a great future ahead of me. It is the beginning stage that will lead me toward my goal of becoming a successful pharmacist. There is no other college that will help me pursue my enthusiasm for academics at the same level. The great curriculum will help me attain knowledge about the greater world that we live in. It will also mold me as a human as well as an intellectual scholar. I would like to engage in cutting edge research at this institution, which is highly known for its research successes. This institution has great community interactions which are important to me because community service allows intellectual growth. I am a very active member of my mosque and I would like to go to a school that encourages spiritual growth along with educational advancement. Knowing that I will have a vast knowledge of a multitude of things, I know that I can achieve success later on in my career.

My inspiration for a career in pharmacy came when my grandmother fell down the stairs and fractured her hip and had to be kept in a nursing home. While she was being cared for, I would visit her every day and help her with her medications. I would read the side effects and began researching other alternative drugs for her hip pain. It was then that I became interested in understanding the study of a drug's nature, and its properties. At this time, I realized the importance of medicine and developed an interest in pharmacology.

Pharmacists give patient consultation and develop an important relationship with their patients. I enjoy assisting others because it allows me to give back to the community. Furthermore, my experience at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Crossroads Pharmacy has reaffirmed that my chosen career will reflect my desire to assist others. At the University of Maryland, I was able to assist patients with their medications. In addition to this, I was able to see the effects of anesthesia and other sedative drugs. At the Crossroads Pharmacy, I volunteered to assist the pharmacy technicians with counting the medications and reading and printing the labels for the drugs. Pharmacy school is the perfect opportunity for me to pursue a career that mirrors those values.

Like science and technology, the field of pharmacy is always evolving. There is always so much advancement with medicine and new clinical trials. This will be a career where I can be continually be active in trying to gain information about new drugs and health information. It is important to me that I have a passion for whatever path my life takes. Pharmacy is where my passion lies and will provide my life with meaning and satisfaction.

Undergraduate / 'It stared back at me and I stared back at it' - Common Application Essay [4]

It stared back at me and I stared back at it. My mind went into an instant blank. As if though nothing was there but me and its overpowering entity. All I could see were the misfit edges; the pieces to the puzzle of my existence. My world stared back at me and held me in captivity. I couldn't turn back or change its outcome. My heartbeat quickened and as I started to run, I realized, this is me. My life is this huge puzzle piece that screams "I'm here! Find my right place and insert me where I can be content rather than colliding with the wrong pieces to be led astray!"

The moment when you realize that everyone and everything around you are interconnected like the overlapping of the tessellations of the Hagia Sophia in Turkey, you know that you are a part of someone else. To find my place, I take one turn to fit my puzzle piece, and I see a girl standing there by herself amongst a group of young kids. She is visiting the mountainous areas of Pakistan where she sees crying children begging for water and no one would listen.

There were dying sons and daughters, but as long you pretend not to hear, all is fine. She looks for someone to come help, but no one does. Was this the society we lived in? A simple trip that was supposed to be fun, turned into a lesson for her. She quickly grabbed a pail of water and brought it to the crying children. As soon as she handed the pail, she was grabbed by a police officer and was told that she had to leave. For if she didn't leave, she would be taken by the army near the Afghanistan border. She stayed long enough to see the children drink the water, but couldn't bear to see them cry, so she ran from there as fast as she could. Her heart beat with those kids and came to conclude that in fact, their liberation is tied to hers.

Like the tessellations of the Hagia Sophia in Turkey, she found her place. She realized that she truly is a part of someone else. She holds the power to unveil the truth where it is needed and can make the difference by being a voice for those that need it. She can provide a safe haven for someone who is in dire need of it and find her place in the world where she is not just any forlorn puzzle piece.

The girl I saw was me and represented how my life is a puzzle itself. My trip to Pakistan was a major event that changed my life. I saw cruel injustices against young children and wondered why society allowed that. When I handed the water, it made the kids happy and that gave me true inner happiness. From then on, I vowed to speak out against injustice. This experience was a puzzle piece that when put together, it helped me find my true identity. Many of the puzzle pieces are put into place, but there are so many more to be conquered in order to complete the puzzle. I found my way through this hardship and came to see that life offers solutions to complex puzzles and anything is possible to achieve as long as there is will power.
