Undergraduate / A Conversation between a granddady and his beloved grakid. UPenn Community Essay [5]

Prompt:Which of the academic communities and social communities that now comprise the University of Pennsylvania are most interesting to you and how will you contribute to them and to the larger Penn community?

I might have missed some of comments you guys made... Well this is my newest version, please read it and feedbacks please!!

Thank you, I will read yours back.

Empty Promising?

*Digging*
"Grandpa, just let the workers do the work, let's go play" my nine year old granddaughter said.
"So, you don't know why I brought you here, Pan (granddaughter)?" I said.
"Nooo" Rolling eyes (shrugs).
*Sigh* "I love Wharton." I told her, eyes closed (reminiscence).
"Ok...?" Pan said in a monotone.
"Hey, guys! I will come back in a minute" I yelled over to the workers.
"No Problem!" The workers responded.
"You know, Pan, this is not the first time I have dug ditches." I told Pan as I led her through the wonderful campus of UPenn.

"I know, Dad told me you actually did the physical work! You were stupid, no you are still stupid." Eyes rolling, finger pointing at me.

(Laugh) "Did your dad and mom tell you why they attend Wharton then?" I asked.
"I don't remember." Pan danced around freely with two arms stretched out.
"You remember Grandpa Meisel?" (2003 Wharton grad).
"Ari Meisel?" Pan asked.
"Correction, Grandpa Meisel." I corrected her.
"What about him?" Pan asked in sarcastic tone.
"It was him, who taught me how to build my own company. No matter what business you are in, you have to understand - by actually doing it - what it takes to do the lowest-level jobs involved in it. People will respect you for knowing what they do on daily basis. This time is a little different though, I want to build this new School of Foreign Languages(diversities) for UPenn with these very two hands." Hands extended out.

"I don't understand."
"Oh, you will when you attend UPenn." I said as we finished our tour around the campus.
Amongst the many contributions I will make, such as diversity of culture and ideas, I believe the most valuable is my enthusiasm for the Wharton School. I will definitely use what I will learn at Wharton to make a difference in society, spreading my knowledge and love for Penn to future generations. As an Asian American, I will fit very well into VPUL's Pan-Asian American Community House(PAACH), a community centers on leadership development. I honestly believe Wharton together with PAACH will shape me into one of the world's top leaders in business. Perhaps when the day come, I will give speeches of inspiration to the larger Penn Community, then when I retire, I will teach Chinese at the newfound School of Foreign Languages.

Poetry / NYU supplement essay: haiku , poems, limericks e.t.c [5]

if it's possible I reccommend you choose another topic perhaps? cause everyone talks about will power.

if you can't think of anything else like most ppl, then stick with it, the second doesn't make sense to me, if you stand above others, hwo can it suddenly become an puzzle that's missing?

anyway, about my UPenn community essay, it's still not clear even after I added

"Among the contributions I will make such as diversity and ideas to the larger Penn community, the best contribution I will make is to actually use what I learned from Wharton. Also I will pass down the knowledge to generations after. Inspired by Why Wharton: What is business? Business is Building Your Own Company - Ari Meisel Interview."

Finished college in three years, with some help of his father, he expanded the family business and made it international. Eventually, he became one of the world's top business leaders. Of course, somewhere along the line, he fell in love.

thanks, but you aren't harsh enough! lol

Chan and Chen is the same word in Chinese. I guess I should have used Chan.

anyway, I was sayiny, as in my dad's case, education isnot neccessary. BUT I'm sure it would helped him a lot if he had education.

and I was trying to catch reader's attention... guess that /failed...

about the summer,

Does NYU only wants to know one thing I did and then explain it? or they want a list of things I did...

Undergraduate / NYU Sups. Why Business, Jackie CHEN!, and summer. [7]

Please tell us what led you to select your anticipated academic program and/or NYU school/college, and what interests you most about your intended discipline.

Education is not really necessary. I have always known this, but nevertheless, I pursued education. My dad was the one who taught me both. He, as someone never learned how to write his name, became a successful businessman and brought me to America. It was that moment I wanted to be a successful businessman just like him. Though, he is a living example one can succeed without education, we both agree Stern School of Business provides the education I need to succeed but to surpass him.

If you had the opportunity to spend one day in New York City with a famous New Yorker, who would it be and what would you do? (Your New Yorker can be anyone -past or present, fictional or nonfictional - who is commonly associated with New York City; they do not necessarily have to have been born and raised in New York.)

Hey Jackie. Yes, it's that Jackie, Jackie Chen. Perhaps the most well known Chinese in western culture. We wouldn't do anything fun, because we would be running away from a bunch of fans. Besides that, I would like him to introduce me to as much famous people as possible in one day, get a business card of everyone. Why? Because I will need it when I graduate. While Stern School will prepare me for business, a strong social network helps. This is something you don't have to learn in a classroom.

My ideas changed completely, so anyone know how is the New Yorker has the most powerful social network?
What did you do this summer?

I took Calculus II at a community college and worked at a restaurant. I also took and pass the IL Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification class. Other than these, I got a chance to learn golf and tennis from the salesman of Golden Food Company. Also, a sushi chef from a nearby Japanese restaurant taught me how to fish.

"The Forbidden Apple"

A boy from an underdeveloped island in China emigrated to America, lived by himself, graduated from the prestigious New York University. This very man also became one of the world's top business leader. How did he do it? What's the story behind this boy who lived by himself and what will be his fate? All he had was an ambitious mind.

pablito3
but is it good at all lol?

so no one understand the first one?

I'm a rather a weak applicant so creativity is my key to NYU now, so is hard work and determination etc..

I compared NYU to light and fire, myself to a moth. Light represents knowledge, a right path, a future etc... as for fire, it represent something unattainable(also knowledge) and destruction. I'm just like a moth who will never give up even though I know it's most likely to end bad(death/destruction/rejection).

A peom best represent me, who never gives up. If that make sense now

Undergraduate / Academic and social communities in the University of Pennsylvania [11]

At no other college in the country will I find the diversity, the endless academic opportunities and the rock climbing community that I will find at the University of Pennsylvania.

Honestly, I think you should take this sentence out, like T said above. It's weak, if you can't back it up then throw it out.

and

ending with just this sentence looks fine to me, actually much better. Just my opinion.

As cliché as it may sound, UPenn is perfect for me.

can you read my poems

Undergraduate / Infinities of Chess - U of I at Urbana Champain Essay [8]

In an essay of 300 words or less, choose one extracurricular activity, work experience, or community service project from the list you provided on the application and explain why you initially chose it, why you continued with it, and how you benefited from it

This is the one I wrote for common app, but I think it really does a good job answering the prompt. What do you guys think? It's only 140 words though, should I write more to make it 300 words?

Infinities of Chess

As a thinker, I have always enjoyed games that exercise the infinite possibilities of mind. Chess is among the best; it not only challenges one's brain but also builds sportsmanship and friendship. Perhaps it is a universe of its own, with pieces that represent phenomenon, and perhaps it has its own law called the "rules of game." It's a war on the board but can also be thought of as science, sport, and art. Every game teaches a lesson. The key to success is not only intelligence but also persistence. Each mistake made will be a stepping stone to success. Even though it's a game, I do take it seriously. Chess is the game of mind and soul, and enhances problem solving that can be used in real life every day. It is a part of my soul. Checkmate!

but I think the college is looking to know more about you with two different prompts, so I don't really recommend to write about the same topic for both prompt...

and I hope your common app main essay is not about the same topic... because I think it would be redundant

thank you guys.
yes, my essay wasn't specific enough because I wasn't really sure how I want to write at first then suddenly overwhelmed with ideas... but can't fit them all into 300 words

I guess it's too dense, anyway I can light it up

Also, I was thinking writing about business and how it relates to math (but I have no clue how business relates to math...) because the adimission ppl always say the decision to business school is going to be mainly based on the math subscore.

Undergraduate / I Cheated on My Wife (Number). U of I essay. [11]

Essay 1: In an essay of 300 words or less, please discuss your academic interests and/or professional goals.

I don't think my essay really answered the question at all lol. I kind of umm went on the tangent while writing this, but please tell me what you think about this essay.

I Cheated on My Wife (Number).
Numbers, what can you do for me? You can neither make me food when I'm hungry nor keep me warm when I'm cold, but I still fell in love with you. Oh, number I have a confession to make. I cheated on you!

Ten years into our relation, I was led astray by the beautiful language into believing that you can't do anything for me. "Math is useless." "Give up on math, you can't do anything with math except be a mathematician or a school teacher." "Your dream is to become a businessman, you need language (English)." Voices venture in and out of my head numerous times throughout the course of my high school career, hence I fell in "love" with English. Even though I took all the hardest math classes my school had to offer and some from a community college, you were no longer my interest but merely a necessity, or I thought? Years, I sacrificed you for English, but now I understand it is you that I love, not English. You are a language of your own. English is the necessity, but you are my love. Confucius once said "If you find enjoy what you do, you will never work another day in your life."

I became interest in business initially because I thought business can lead me into all the candies I can get! Well, you know, make money, buy candies... how naïve was that? Though the thoughts have changed while growing up , but it was not until recently I truly understand what business is about. Reading through the shelves of business books in Barnes and Nobel, I realized how hard it is to be a successful businessman. Not only does it require integrity, leadership, but also friendship. No matter what business one is going to take, the key is people. Building a company is easy, but managing it is not. Business is understanding, trusting, and lasting. Business is math in a pretty dress, it's you. I love you.
